Good advice. My berry area is out of control because I've let the runners go. I put in 100 crowns (30 dollars US) 2 years ago and did pinch off every flower but not the runners. Now I have 400 plants, no more empty spaces to harvest from, and need to spend a week digging out paths again and moving those plants to a new space. They do make a nice ground cover on a slope I don't want to mow. I 'll need to sell them next year from the driveway. I was getting 8 pounds a day this year for two weeks, so maybe 20 pounds a day next year? sheesh. Too much of a good thing!
I bought and planted 6 plants this spring. I now have 31 plants that are thriving and will give me lots of berries next year. I wasn't expecting a harvest this year, but I did get to taste all 3 varieties, and am looking forward to a bountiful harvest next year.
I started with one strawberry plant in April (she produced two berries.. I got one & a squirrel got the other). It's August and now there are 5! Very valuable info especially for a newbie like me. Thank you very much.
I just mulched our strawberry bed with grass clippings and then wondered if that was a good choice to mulch them with but then I saw at the end of your video that you had mulched yours with grass clippings and they looked great. Guess it should be okay. We had first mulched with wood chips but not very thick as the plants were new. They are now starting to blossom, which I keep picking off but no runners yet. Hope to have our own strawberries next year. We planted Kent but something ate 10 of them right down to the roots, so I just bought some Sable ones and planted too.
@@maritimegardening4887 Ah, actually my husband just got rid of a porquipine a couple weeks ago as we have two dogs and that would not have been good if they got ahold of it. Maybe that was what ate my plants!
Just recently found your channel. Was stoked to hear you're from NS. Really enjoying your vids. I topped my tomatoes after watching your vid ; ) Thanks for the tips. Dave
My first year strawberries went nuts this year. I cut runners twice already and should probably do it again now. I know I missed a lot. They must love the soil in the bed I planted them in but I also fertilized a little. Can't wait until next June :)
Hello Greg, this year I didn’t fair so well with strawberries. Spring looked promising, then not sure what happened, fruit started coming very small and misshapen or guppy.🤢 One whole big planter, all the plants died. My other planter of strawberry plants is doing well but I’m using those to replenish plants lost with its runners. 👍🏼😉
7:00 interesting I thought my strawberries were too shaded and trying to throw off runners to move toward light. I have about 2 dozen runners still connected sitting in starting trays with some 10 gauge wire pieces holding them down right now. Trying the same thing with a couple wild black cap raspberry ends.
My strawberries must not be happy, I have ever bearing and every year get hardly any fruit or very seldome runners, I did fertalize them a lot last year every 2 weeks so maybe to much fertlizer. Any advice please I'm thinking of giving up on planting strawberries
Yes every 2 weeks was probably not good :) Maybe once in spring is all that's needed - if at all. Try not using any this year and see what happens maybe
I planted 3 varieties of strawberries last spring and some produced a few berries but they were ugly and deformed with green knobs on the pointed end. I used compost and horse manure and fish fertilizer over the summer so what did I do wrong? How do I get healthy well formed berries? I have oodles of babies the plants themselves are all healthy and dark green so not certain what else I could do.
Greg I listen 2 times, But still missed it or never got it; what I'm asking do the first year count in the 3 to 4 years of it's life? The berries won't be produced until the 2nd season so is the 1st included in the plants life span as far as berry production. Hope I got the question across correct. Thx
1st season is just growing, no fruit; next 3 seasons you get good fruit production, then every season after that, less production. I should have been more clear in the video sorry
@@maritimegardening4887 wild strawberries like I have only produce fruit, like in the forests I got my plant from,,every two or three years..I know,,I look for the wild, tiny strawberries every year but fruit only comes every few seasons..
I grew my strawberries from seed last year. Only three survived the winter so I elected to let these develop runners. There were so many runners that I placed pots under the runners so that I could transplant them to other areas of my garden. At last count I have over 25 pots! And that's not including an equal number of runners that already established themselves in the ground. What kind of spacing would you recommend between strawberry plants?

Wow! Nova Scotia! Sure wish our plant prices were cheap like out there,,,Alberta is three times the amount charged.
For every runner I pulled this summer was to be a berry wow I would have had alot of jam.

What is the least expensive mulch I can use in my garden pots? I can only use pots for my outdoor vegetable and flower plants.
grass clippings or leaves - anything free
I saw a berry in there. 😋
Curious how you keep them over the winter....freezing??
Freezer jam. The ones that are not eaten fresh all become freezer jam - I have a link to a vid on how to make it at the end of this video
Or do you mean the plants? I layer mulched leaves/straw on top for insulation. Remove in spring!
Thanks+
