Baldur's Gate 3: Kelemvor, Lord Of The Dead

  • Kelemvor is the most recent of several gods who have held the office of God of the Dead. His predecessors had vastly different ideas regarding the arbitration of souls who arrived in their realm and in this sense Kelemvor represents a revolutionary change in how the dead are governed. Here I discuss his history, policies and church and possible involvement in BG3.

    I think Kelemvor is a good change of pace from a series of uncaring and cruel gods of death and in reality a tragic figure. Many people might assume that becoming a god is a gift but working for Ao is as much as obligation as it is a gift. He was robbed of his childhood, robbed of his adulthood, robbed of his life and robbed of any chance to pursue happiness unfettered by obligations outside of his control. Thanks for covering him!

    I pity him. He tried to do right by mortals, but he was basically told to stop by divine bureucracy, based on the argument of a literal madman, whose argument could and should have also been used against him as well, but apparently justice only had to cut in one direction that day.

      Truth be told, I think if you look closely, you can see bits of the “old” Kelemvor lingering, even if it’s in subtle ways. For example, he eventually did give the soul of Mystra’s Priest to her as she requested after deciding that the fact that Cyric had robbed him of his faith was grounds for not labeling him as faithless. Nine Hells; even his policy of having each soul placed with other souls who had similar moral alignments in life is still a form of rewarding the righteous and punishing the wicked, because it means that if you were unpleasant or a backstabber then you’ll be with other people who are unpleasant or backstabbers (THINK about that), and if you were loving and charitable then you’ll be with others who are loving and charitable - and they’ll be just as loving and charitable towards you.

    Damn it's refreshing to hear about a god who isn't a sociopathic tyrant for once. Great music choice btw!

    Despite the change, I like to think there are shades of the "old" Kelemvor still left in him. According to the Forgotten Realms wiki, he did later find a loophole allowing him to return Mystra's Priest and friend to her after initially refusing, and I find it hard to imagine that he would have even looked for that loophole if he didn't still secretly (perhaps even unconsciously) care.

    Kelemvor is one of my favorite interpretations of a god of death, and thus I steal him for my own settings

    That brings back memories about Mask of the Betrayer add-on for the NWN2. Shame we probably wont have interaction with the Wall of the faithless thing in BG3, though.

    Honestly, this what I would imagine a god of death in rpg would be. Instead of a cruel god, they manifest a caring nature and guiding soul between mortal and dead realm

    Kelemvor's family was toxic as hell. A baby has no idea what's going on. You can't hold him responsible and then weigh him down with guilt over everything forever. Helicopter parenting isn't the best. 👀;
    Glad the dead got a vote and put someone else in charge. He became fair.

    Love that you used "Children of the Omnissiah" as the background music for a dnd video. Lol.

    The story of Kelemvor as a mortal is one of the saddest in Faerun. And also one of the saddest as a god. Even being the merciful god of death, he had to sacrifice the last shreds of his humanity. But he did it as a true man, saving both his best friend Adon and his best girl Midnight from ultimate suffering. While becoming the one ultimate god of the dead. He chose to be.

    Thank you for the video. If Kelemvor sent Withers who is maybe Jergal, wouldn't that make Astarion a possible target for Kelemvor's priests? I wonder if Larian will put that in there. Also, if some of the Zhentarim still worship Bane, would we not be able to hire the Zhentarim to help fight against the Absolute or would we have to find the Zhentarim who worship Cyric instead? "Things that make you go hmmmm...."

    might been said but there was special dialogue with withers when first meet and first talk to in camp not sure after that save broke so deleted it still early in act 1
    but was interesting to see and they give a huge hint i dont see mentioned about withers if you click the plaque infront of the box he pops out of
    here lies the guardian of tombs which is a jergel thing if i recall

    Playing as a Cleric of Kelemvor, Withers is quite interesting in dialog. Is he Jergal? Never thought of that.

      I'm saying this after BG3 won GOTY.
      But even when the game was still in EA it was heavily speculated that Withers was an Avatar of Jergal. You do find him in a ruined temple of Jergal

    I have always wanted to try playing a cleric of Kelemvor..sadly it seems that the grave domain won't appear in bg3 outside of mods. That'd make being a cleric of his in bg3 seem off.

    • @spellandshield

    • @pul0y
      @pul0y ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@spellandshield it is a hope of mine to get other domains (and subclasses) without needing to mod..especially those that should still work very well in video game format like the grave domain. i am nervously excited to see what larian will do to the knowledge domain given its many divination domain spells that just won't translate well.

    • @TheMarcHicks
      @TheMarcHicks ปีที่แล้ว

      Not everything we can get in the full release is available in Early Access, so don't lose hope just yet. I suspect we will see Necromancy & Death Domain Clerics in Full Release.

    • @pul0y
      @pul0y ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheMarcHicks thing is death domain clerics, despite the name, are mostly the kind of clerics contrary to kelemvor's ideals. raising the dead is pretty much what he stands against. kelemvor wants the dead to stay dead and the living to have a full life. so grave domain is the best fit for his clergy..which isn't in the PHB nor DMG and thus unlikely to be implemented.

    *I disagree with both Kelemvor and Velsharoon.*
    Undeath should be allowed as a tool for karmic justice, revenge, or to continue important work.
    Beings already use it that way, but it should be sponsored and controlled by the God of the Dead to squash evil, rather than being left to those who embrace evil for power.
