Never put such thought into coffee. I am pretty much just a Folgers guy (probably a horrifying thing to say here. Lol) and I got this one from Amazon and love it. Put it on to drip and by the time I run my beard straightener through my beard coffee is done and no having to fiddle with a coffee pot anymore.

I found a pretty decent japanese iced coffee recipe for this coffee maker. 150 grams of ice, 20 grams of coffee, and 150 grams of hot water in the reservoir. Brew directly over the ice, and as it brews the ice is slowly melts. The end result is a really crisp and smooth cup of coffee, similar to a cold brew but with much more flavor. Light and medium roasts are really good. Fruity beans like an Ethiopian light roast are really good in particular.

I totally agree with you that doing a couple of 'swirls' will help distribute the water better across the grounds. I have bought this OXO brewer, and I am very pleased with the results. It is just 'Great' for Camping.

i've used this for years. I'm definitely swirl. I always just boil water. I make like 16 ounces and use it into one of those giant, tall plastic drinking cups from target cause i put it in a travel mug. Works great. Not fancy. I use three tablespoons cause i'm cheap and want my coffee to last longer. I'm also not particular. My coffee just needs to be hot and not week. So this is coming from an avid coffee drinker but not really an afficianado. I also found the lid can create a vacuum sometimes and liquid won't drip so i often leave the lid slightly askew to let a tiny bit of air in. But this has been in use for 5 or 6 years since my drip broke. Much more affordable alternative for one person. If you're like me and just want minimal fuss and effort i'd say this does the job. I'm even planning on buying a second and shipping it to my parent's house for when i travel cross country since they have no coffee maker lol.

    random youtube recommendations
good video about a thing I never knew existed, I don't like how the reservoir only has holes in the center, might cause some of the grounds on the outer rim to be under extracted

Thanks for watching! Yeah that's an issue for sure, and probably why a gentle swirl helps so much in my testing. Perhaps they wanted to make sure it would work for a tiny batch, where outer holes would bypass the coffee bed altogether.
At some point I'll make a comparison between this + Hario Drip Assist + Gabi Master B. Those aren't so completely hands-off, but the holes are better positioned.

@@thebolderbrew Been a while since you made this video. Have you any thoughts in going either an oxo-dripper route vs say an Melitta + gabi master b, or hario v60 + gabi master b?

You can use the OXO tank with the Aeropress chamber for a delayed press or no-press Aeropress experiment (give yourself as much as 10 minutes for no-press). I've played around with this, and end up using the OXO tank*, not stirring the Aeropress (the slow drip sinks all the grounds, making it a no-bypass brewer), then pressing right after all the water has transferred from the OXO tank to the Aeropress chamber.
    * I use toothpicks to plug two of the three larger shower holes in the OXO tank, and rotate the tank twice. Yeah, it's extra effort, but now it's a ritual...

That is genius! Never crossed my mind, but now I'll have to try. Thanks for sharing!

I’ve got one of these and noticed that the six water holes in the dripper are letting different amounts of water through. I can see it in yours at 7:17. Anything we should do about this? I’ve experimented with rotating the dripper 1/4 through brewing in between agitation swirls. I’m also playing with a bloom step. Thoughts? Thanks

What grind setting do you recommend for the oxo?

    • @thebolderbrew
      @thebolderbrew  ปีที่แล้ว +2

Medium, I suppose...but that means different things to different people. As a starting point, find a grind setting at which it's done brewing (all water has passed through the grounds) in 2:30-3:00. Adjust from there to suit your taste. Coarser if too harsh, finer if too watery. Ideal grind size will also depend on the specific coffee and even how fresh that coffee is.

Don't pour 212 F water into plastic, I believe OXO warns of this, a 30-second wait, getting it off the boil. It's a problem of leaching out at the boiling point of plastic
I just measure the water, I pour a bloom stage over the coffee, wait 20 seconds, then add the tank, pour the rest of the water in, and put a cap on top of the tank.
    I don't think anybody drinking 180-205 F degree coffee.
This is nice for camping, motels, etc.

Ugh?....putting coffee grounds into a 'dry' filter?...strange. most suggest that you should 'wet' the filter before brewing?

You should have just omitted the 'dry' method, as being 'not' recommended.
