When I was growing up we only had a coal fire single glazed windows and no heating. Freezing in winter. The toilet was downstairs. Ahhh it was horrible. Same again for alot of people. To expensive now. Thanks Suzanne
Glad you liked Wicken Will. My mother was a Wicken girl and in my youth I spent my holidays with my grandparents in the village the areas you visited were my playgrounds in the 60s. No health and safety or National trust restrictions back then although the Fen was under National trust ownership.
Imagine staying at Wicken Fen and walking around the whole area. Visting that look out, having lunch and looking at those beautiful birds. Visiting that historic village, so you appreciate the luxury living of today a lot more. Oh I'd love that, but think you cannot.

I loved cycling through the Wicked Fens to Ely. Beautiful and as you said quiet. We were finding England very noisey, like living on the edge of a motorway all the time. And the chimneys in Ely the most stunning designs we saw and so tall and skinny!. In NZ you can't have chimneys like those. They'd fall down in no time in an earthquake! Cheers, kia ora.

Shame you didn't go down the Old West and onto the Bedford Great Ouse; more moorings, easy locks, towns like Huntingdon, St Ives and St Neots so plenty of shopping choices, villages like Hemingford Grey, a Chinese bridge at Godmanchester, but still quiet and peaceful. Looking forward to your journey through the tidal locks and the Middle Levels!! Take care.

Having traveled along Burwell Lode and Wicken Lode, you ought to read a book published in 1944 by Alan Bloom (famous for Blooms Nurseries) called The Farm in the Fen. You passed his farm, Priory Farm, by that lift bridge on Burwell Lode. Having reclaimed the fen for the War effort, King George and Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother, visited the fen by special barge to see what Alan had done. th-cam.com/video/JZv5HfqIl40/w-d-xo.html The wooden bridge you passed under entering and leaving Wicken lode is called ‘Cock-up’ bridge. The concrete bridge by the lift bridge, also used to be a wooden Cock-up bridge.
@@NarrowboatWill Reach is one of the oldest villages in the Fens. I can remember watching children dancing round a Maypole on the green. You’ll probably find getting your Narrowboat up the lode a lot easier when the reeds have died back. My memory of going up the Lodes with a cruiser in the early 70’s was how clear the water always was. Upware lock only had one Guillotine lock and a pair of traditional gates then. Operated by a Lock keeper. We kept our boat almost exactly where that Lift bridge is near Priory Farm. Hope all goes well and will look out for the vlog
