On the east coast, I'm driving 2+ hours to do a dope gravel ride through mountains. I RELY on Google maps imagery to make sure there is double track gravel. (my preferred gravgrav) if I can't see through the tree canopy with satellite it's a no go. Awesome video as always my dude
Edit: his closing remarks 😱 What a cool guy

Great analogy 9:40 “bikes are like instruments, they’re not tools so much, they’re something that you play.” So true, and in flow they begin to disappear into the dance between human and environment. Such a thoughtful approach to crafting experiences to share with people.

BIG LIKE to the poetry of route building. It’s very similar to how I feel as well, with the remark that uncertain trails here in Eastern Europe are best to include in the route based on satellite imagery. RWGPS can most of the time actually snap the route to points on the satellite base layer, especially if you are on “walking”. I’ve done this several times recently and never really failed.

The parallel of route-building to time-based artforms...music and film especially, but also Japanese garden and gourmet food...is crafting an experiencing for people to enjoy. I literally got goosebumps on that realization! It's not just a means of traveling to a destination or through a place, it's creating an experience that can be complex and deeply exciting! I'm quietly freaking out a little! I sincerely wish and hope to get a chance to experience an OMTM ride someday, a "Francesconi original" hanging in the Hills of Oregon Art Gallery!

The problem with using heat maps or even segments on Strava is that - when you're on a gravel/adventure bike - you can find yourself in serious mountain bike country all of the sudden. Happened to me a lot. You could hike-a-bike-it but as someone who's been in charge of gravel group rides and doing shit loads of recon work I've grown tired of hucking the bike on my shoulder and walking for like a kilometer in the forest :P
