Regardless of how you feel about The Bad Batch connecting to the sequel trilogy, this feels like something Palpatine would do anyway. Its very in-character for him.

Yeaa. One thing I can say for sure. I don't like ANY of the sequel movies. They have some moments. But zero rewatch value for me. And even tho sheev is the best part of ROS (every time he shows up on screen he does/says something amazing) I always disagreed w the decision to bring him back, for a million reasons
But I DO like how these new Disney shows are connecting the loose threads that trilogy created, and I think they've done so very well. Nothing can be done to fix ALL of the problems w those movies. But they're doing a great job dealing w that particular error

I personally don’t have a problem with Palpatine planning for his resurrection 55 years into the future, although even that’s a little long to plan something. Nor do I have any problem with Star Wars trying to explain how he returned in Rise of Skywalker.
The problem is, Star Wars tv shows explaining something that the movie itself should’ve explained on its own

You can headcanon-override the Bad Batch episodes a bit if you pretend they're just setting up Dark Empire in the old EU where Palpy was attempting (and eventually succeeded) to clone himself. Pretending the sequels never happen helps immensely.

In the old EU cannon, clones were abnormalities in the force. Which is one of the reasons his Dark Empire comic clone bodies deteriorated rapidly. Not to mention the the clones are a surplus, no one will notice their absence. Less bodies to hide. Maybe use them as fodder for other experiments.

A welcome return to quality following the weak Mando s3 and Ahsoka. Not crazy about the Palpatine cloning in TRoS or the ham-handed way they set it up in Mando, but here it was handled as well as is possible.

George Lucas initially filmed in Tunisia because the cost of building sets was smaller. It is a lot cheaper to build an igloo in the middle of a desert than a street in the center of a futuristic city with vehicles flying around.
That trend has continued throughout all of the Skywalker Saga films. Nearly all of the actual live action sets are located in sparsely populated areas.
CGI animation like we saw in the prequels, and now The Volume sound stages were created for this very reason. Costs.
You need to move, house, and feed a LOT of people to film outside of a studio. You need technical people to handle the lighting, sounds, and video.
You need more people to build sets, maintain costumes, apply makeup to the actors, etc. This get can get really expensive, really fast.
The Volume allows all of the support people to work in one place. They can even go to their own homes every night and feed themselves.

The difference between live action and animation is pretty simple. The animation group, for whatever reason, is less under the thumb of the DEI side. The WRITING is far better than the garbage being churned out in the live action writing rooms.
It ALWAYS boils down to the writing/creative process. In live action (Andor: exception) the writing rooms are infested with Disney's DEI processes. See Film Threat's D-File series for more info on that. While overall directives are adhered to, it seems that there is more 'freedom' in the animation group to just tell good stories. Almost like they've been overlooked.

Clones are never identical to the DNA donor, that's why you see the variations on the clones.
Variations happen every time an animal is cloned in real life. It even happens in bananas and they're clones too from a plant in England

  • @Jeroogalo
    @Jeroogalo 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

These Midichlorian experiments are interesting. As pointed out, all these clones are genetically identical, so why experiment on all of them? Unless they're searching for genetic mutations they didn't account for being the key they need to latch onto to master cloning of force sensitives, or creating clones that can be made to be force sensitive. Also I'm not sure Midichlorian concentration was ever genetic in the first place, it seemed to appear randomly, yet also in bloodlines. I suppose if there is a genetic mutation out there that explains why the midichlorians link to some people and not others, that could explain the random occurrences and the lineage ones. Just thinking out loud, but didn't life originate from the wellspring of life which was the source of midichlorians. Not sure such an organism can appear in all sorts of species, but only those with specific genetic markers, despite the fact that all these different species may not even do DNA the same way. It is interesting though, and although I'm against bringing Palpatine back, it does feel in his character to be doing everything he can to stay alive. (Though I guess he gave up on manipulating the midichlorians to create life).

    • @DS9TREK
      @DS9TREK 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Actually clones aren't identical. Clones we can make now in the present are never genetically identical to each other or the host donor of the DNA.
The fact that you can get variations like Clone Force 99 is proof they use the same technique as us.

It’s interesting to me that the opening comment assumes all the clowning retcon work Disney is doing is trying to fool future generations into believing it was the plan all along. Ascribing bad motivations to Disney has become a default.
What if the are just trying to fill in the gaping holes they created with the disjointed storytelling in the sequels? Not a deception, but a sincere effort to fix their mistakes.
It’s exactly what worked for the prequels. Those were completely different kinds of holes (relationships that advanced the plot but made no sense in the scenes we actually saw on screen, for example). But The Clone Wars and other media came along and filled in those gaps. 25 years later the generation who watched that era “in order” love the prequels and barely notice all the holes in the actual movies.
Why wouldn’t Disney believe that will work again?

Hmm. I dunno... I kinda don't really have a problem per se with Palpy wanting to clone himself. Maybe since i really loved the old dark horse comics from EU, it just seemed like a very Palpy thing to do really. Not to mention as a long time player of SWTOR, there was Emperor Vitiate, and his pursuit of immortality that even got the player character involved. There's probably other sith throughout the ages like that, that I am forgetting about. So it's like... there is a precedent for sith wanting to live forever, possess people etc.
That said, yeah the sequels did a very poor job of implementing it, when trying to make it "canon". If they were going to take inspiration from EU content, they should have gone whole hog instead of giving a passing nod, then having to backfill with all these shows.

I didn't go into these three episodes expecting epic happenings, honestly, a progressive, logical story-arc going forward is best. I think we all knew that behind the scenes, Palpatine had people working on cloning for his purposes. The question is what exactly will the scientists gain by adding "midis" to non Force sensitive people? Palpatine possessing Omega's body some day? Or any other Fett clone's body? Success there really wouldn't help with his own Palpatine clones, except to demonstrate that it could be done. The question that is NEVER asked about Omega and that other female Fett clone is how they made two females from male DNA? Men's Y Chromosome lacks an 'arm' that women with two X Chromosomes have, so to produce her, more genetic material would have to be inserted. Even if this material was extracted from Jango's DNA, it's placement to form a second X chromosome would result in an offspring rather than a clone. Of course this is Sci-Fi, but making a biological female clone from a male is nothing simply done. Yet never once did this come up in TBB. You really can't make a clone from the opposite sex, it would be more of an offspring rather than a perfect clone. You can look at Omega and see that clearly she is not a Fett. Jango didn't have blonde hair or pale skin, so obviously there is some different DNA there.

I feel like there is less meddling with the writing in animation. The live actions projects have the same head guys but new writers who haven’t written Star Wars before or only did one episode and they get a whole show. Add 10x more higher up visibility and mandated revisions and you get a crap sandwich. Budget is somewhat irrelevant when you see how much money gets thrown at these projects and they still look like they’re fan made

Palatine's cloning in this show can be super intriguing (which I think it is) but none of it really matters if they lead back to the sequels, This doesn't even begin to fix them, the line "somehow Palatine retuned" is very stupid and lazy but in the grand scheme of things that line does nothing, are they going to make 3 or 4 shows to explain why Rey learns the force randomly, are they going to show why the republic is completely incompetent in the sequels and let the first order take over, are they going to explain why Luke sucks, are they going to explain the ancient sith dagger that also lines up with the deathstar wreckage? Explaining Palatine's return fixes nothing, heck if you were into the EU you already knew with Force Unleashed, the canceled Battlefront 3, and Dark Empire that all showed Palatine's obsession with force sensitive clones, the fact Palatine clones himself isn't the problem, its the sequels themselves they're just so unredeemable it drags down every show that even hints at them.

Everything is redeemable, even Darth Vader. If enough people want those things explained they will explain them in shows and comics and movies. Star Wars has always been this way. They never explain Luke and Leigh making out. The line “somehow Palpatine returned” is equally stupid and genius at the same time because they were obviously setting up to tell more stories (like this one). If they didn’t try to make the sequels make sense I think that would be worse than ignoring them.

@@mkhud50n No, not everything is redeemable. The sequels are an incoherent trilogy by themselves, and they need to be trashed. You completely missed what I was saying "somehow Palpatine returned" is completely stupid and lazy, but it's probably one of the things that needs explained least in a trilogy of bad decisions and lore breaking plot holes, Luke and Leia kissing isn't a plot hole, maybe a bit strange, but literally changes nothing. And I don't hear anyone asking for this to be explained, if anything i hear the exact opposite to never mention the sequels ever again and to just ignore them, which i agree with completely, not inject the shows people actually like with something they actively ask less of. The best part about shows like bad batch and Mando season 1 and 2 was because it reminded us of old Star Wars, real Star Wars before the dark times, before the sequels.

Hey, Thor. What do you think the reaction would be to Sidious pursuing cloning in this time period, if it might have been received better had we never seen the outcome of it in the Sequel Trilogy? Obviously, I there are a million "what if" questions we could ask about changing various elements of that trilogy, but I think fans would give the idea more leniency if we weren't privy to the result. That's kind of how I've been treating the little bit of Star Wars I've liked from Disney, as though we still don't know what happens after the Original Trilogy. I recognize that isn't the intention of the creators, nor is it ideal, but we do not live in ideal times for Star Wars. I've never been a fan of Sidious returning, either in the movies or the comics/novels (I've never read them, though), but I think it makes total sense for him to at least pursue the option. Everything he does is calculated, and I don't know that Sidious would have invested as much in the clones simply to have a supply of warriors if he were just going to discard them after the war. I think the great thing about a show like this is it provides an opportunity to show all the things our heroes and villains tried in the midst of the main story that didn't quite pan out, and I believe this is a natural progression of his story and motivations.

In this case I’m concerned, I felt good about both Kenobi and Ahsoka in the early episodes but they declined over time. I can already see a concern on this one. If Omega is an unaltered clone and has a high M count, does that mean Boba and Jango have high M counts too? It feels more like they haven’t fully learned from “we didn’t have a plan” and instead have seen a chance to link a popular series with a less well loved trilogy.

I definitely found this to be a much better start to the season than last season I definitely found the second episode to be the weakest one I mean I like how it shows even how the young clone cadets got the short end of the stick with the Empire but still, I think it could’ve been a bit better, but even that it definitely wasn’t the worst episode we got the series I highly doubt anything is gonna top season two episode five that holds the metal for my least favorite episode of the series the third episode was damn good as well, although crosshair and omega escaping is only gonna last so long and of course Ian slays palatine once more and the way, Hemlock, almost certainly almost died was pretty damn intense, had palpatine found out an escape was happening while he was their. Finally I really hate to bring this up. I’m trying not to let this dictate how I view the episodes mainly the third episodes I just really think it’s stupid that they keep shoving in sequel connections and hoping people don’t notice seriously it’s been confirmed for nearly 4 years. The sequels had no plan the more they try and explain them away the worse it looks I’m sorry they’re not fooling anyone…

Hey Thor, I have a question for you. How long should people wait before talking spoilers? Going into this season my roommates and I needed to have a discussion about when any of the four of us can discuss what happened in fear of any of the others overhearing. Also what about spoilers in the titles of web articles? I remember in the second season of Mandelorian there was a screen rant article titled something along the lines of "Why Luke Skywalker Arriving Actually Makes Sense". I want your perspective as someone who's even more connected to the star wars community than I am.

I would like to think/hope that, when it comes to articles and video titles/thumbnails, that people would wait at least a weak to include spoilers in them, which is what I usually try to do. However, the battle for clicks is so big that most just immediately put spoilers everywhere now.

Palpatine returning via cloning was an awful idea, back when the EU did it, and it was an awful idea when Disney did it. However it was not awful for lore reasons in either case. It was awful because of narrative reasons. It invalidates Return of the Jedi.
That's said, it's here, it's been done, there's no undoing TROMS, Star Wars is stuck with it, just like the EU was stuck with Dark Empire.
However this idea, that with fleshing out how it was done in-universe is equal to "Lucasfilm is trying to tell us they always planned to do this" is just as mindnumblingly stupid.
Palpatine did seek immortality, that was made very clear in ROTS. It's perfectly in-character for him to set-up a large operation like this in order to accomplish that goal. Just ignore the rehash-trilogy, and pretend the operation was ultimately a failure.

2: Filoni is not even that deeply involved in TBB. His role is the same as Lucas's was on TCW. He is closely overseeing the production, but he's not the showrunner.

After that comic Vader realizes he can’t beat palpatine and rejoins him as his apprentice. So, would Vader approve of what’s going on in Mt. Tantiss? I’m going to assume again he probably wouldn’t because that would mean Vader would never have a shot at the throne.

The prequels sucked though Ep III was modestly okay.
    Remember that?
I was a believer in that because I grew up with the original trilogy and many of the Legends books.
After watching Mandalorian and digging it, I watched the Clone Wars and Rebels and now have softened on the prequels.
    The Sequels? Garbage.
But, if Filoni and Favreau tell new stories that improve on the mess started and finished by JJ, I’m all for it.
We can pine for the idea of Rian given all Sequel movies to tell a story, but we got what we got.

I've started reading through the EU again and am reminded of how much better it was than Disney Star Wars. I am currently working through the X-Wing series by Michael A. Stackpole. The closest anyone has come to even holding a candle to the EU is Rogue One and Andor, and the first two seasons of the Mandalorian. The idea of cloning does not bother me because this was canon in the EU as well. I just don't want to watch it connect to a terrible sequel trilogy.
