I have a trick that I've used for years. To find out how opaque a nail polish will be shake it and turn it on its side. Look for the air bubble. That layer on the inside of the bottle (left by the bubble) will give you an idea of how the first coat will look. If that air bubble in the bottle is hard to see then the polish will be very pigmented. Hope this helps!🤗
I can get a general idea by looking at the edges of the bubble, when the bottle is standing upright. If the edges cut off abruptly then it's opaque. If they fade a little before they cut off then it's more sheer. I hope that made sense.
This is good; I’ve just been opening the bottle and if I can’t see through the neck, it’s a full cover otherwise it’s a polish that should be built up in coats 😊
I think the brush makes a big difference too. I'm horrible at using a traditional straight cut polish brush but the rounded brush end on some polishes makes it way easier to get a nice line at the cuticle.
Apart from all the information you share with us,, watching you is also extremely comforting. Your voice, your demeanor, something about all of it is so warm. Thank you Suzie 💅
I am 73 years old and never had nails to polish. As a child I bit them as i got older they split , and chipped. Now I am using a Sally Henson cuticle oil and they are growing. Your video is encouraging to me.
Just a tip: Use a disposable makeup sponge to layer on your glitter polishes. Just paint the glitter polish onto the end of a clean makeup sponge and gently pat it onto your nails, let dry, and repeat until you're happy with the result! The sponge kinda sucks up the clear polish, just leaving the glitter in place so it layers very well and way more evenly on the nail. Works nicely to make glitter ombré designs. 😊
12:00 that's a topper. (I think the blue holo flakie topper from Holo Taco's first anniversary) Toppers *SHOULD* always be labeled as toppers so that you don't buy them expecting full coverage, but a lot of brands don't identify toppers well enough. And you really can't tell how sparse the glitters or flakes will be on your nail because they tend to stick to the inside of the bottle.
Yeah I was gonna say the same thing. That one is a topper from Holo Taco’s limited edition first anniversary collection. If you compared it to Frost Light which is supposed to be full coverage in 2-3 coats, it looks completely different from the topper which isn’t supposed to cover everything. Maybe a follow up video explaining the difference between cover colors, jellies, and toppers could help? It is hard to tell them apart just looking at the bottle. Holo Taco is good about advertising them correctly, though they could indicate on the bottles better, but a lot of other brands don’t really say, so it can cause confusion.
@@palestar828 Yes. Toppers go over a full coverage polish. They are usually shimmers, glitters or flakeys in a clear base so that you can see the color of the base polish.

People comment on how perfect I paint my nails, and I always say it's because I use polishes that are much more forgiving; glitter, metallic flakes, jelly/flakes, shimmer/linear holo. I almost exclusively wear those. Maybe my lack of practice makes cremes more difficult, but they do seem to be the most challenging to perfect. I'll mention that baby blue holo taco glitter was meant to be a topper. That one was from 2020.

I would advice you to apply the first "drop" or bit of color towards the middle of the nail and slowly push the polish towards the cuticle and sides. try to lay your hand you are painting flat on the table, as well as the painting hand too (incl. the ellbow) that might give you a bit more steadiness. I also like to use a thin brush with acetone to clean up edges. Cristine (Simplynailogical also has an old video with lots of tips on how to paint your nails as a beginner) hope that helps.
A great way to get a more solid glitter application is to put your polish on with a disposable wedge makeup sponge and press it onto your nail. The sponge sucks up the clear base, but is enough to make the glitter stick.
There is one thing that I ALWAYS do when buying nail polishes, is checking for swatch pics but especially live swatching videos since you can actually see how the polish behaves and how it looks at 1st, 2nd and even maybe 3rd layer and also how different toppers looks on the top of the polish :) Then also swatch pics since those does show how the polish looks on the nail and often it's an huge different from the bottle itself. Yes! Swatch videos are a must for me, especially when some brands don't disclose the use of fake nails, blurring base coats, or other coats of color underneath. Or if they don't disclose how many coats it takes to achieve the opacity in their official swatches.
Me too! A professional manicure would be such a waste of money for me because I change my mind so often about which polish I'm wearing! It would have to be a huge commitment to stick to one manicure to justify the cost! Much better for me to do my own whenever I feel like it!

With standard nail polish (as in, non gel polish) the fewer strokes the better. One stroke down the middle and one on each side. Too many strokes cause a mess and those brush strokes show. This is important especially with the 2nd coat.
I love glitter nail polish with the larger pieces. Works great for when I'm going camping or even travel. Very easy touch up and less noticeable chips.
I do the layering different colours for my nails too, I have a fast dry periwinkle blue that I like to do one layer of then top it with a layer of copper glitter nail polish that has a prismatic effect so it looks like a rainbow when the light hits it at the right angle, I diluted the glitter polish a lot with a bottle of shiny top coat too so it was less thick and flowed better and would show a bit of the nice blue nail polish underneath it easily.
Suzie this was such an awesome video to watch. Great information. I remember back in the 80’s doing the three stroke method of applying nail polish. One down each side and one down the middle. Would this technique still be a benefit with the the cream polishes so we don’t see the brush strokes in your opinion?
Hey Susie, can we do an episode on nails with people who have developed allergies to monomer . I notice hard gel i react less then acrilic. And are there any allergy friendlier brand on gel, acrilics, and/or gel polish?
The only ways are thin coats and using a quick dry top coat. There are also quick dry drops and drying sprays. But those are secondary to making sure your coats aren't thick and using a quality quick dry top coat. The best quick dry top coats are from indie brands - KBShimmer, Monarch, Polished For Days, Cuticula, Glisten & Glow, etc.
Love the use of holo taco, but I really don’t know if the white was a good example of what normal whites look like because it is much more solid than many others out on the market. Edit: the one at 12 is a top coat rather than a glitter polish meant for coverage 🙂 so the way its used it over the blue is what this one is more meant for
I LOVE glitter, so now I have an excuse to get more glitter polish. 🤣 I stopped wearing any acrylics/fake nails a few years ago but suck at painting my natural nails cause they're so short. But I'll keep practicing with glitters.
Also painting nails can be hard but also the doing a prep properly for regular nail polish is one but also of your doing multiple coats then not putting too much on each time so it dries faster
I’ve tried every color of nude and I look dead. I don’t think I’ve ever found a nude shade that didn’t make me look sickly. I’d loveeeeee to wear them though because they’re so gorgeous. So I’m stuck wearing white and red.
I remember getting French tips after a couple times asking the nail tech to use the same base color but with a frost/metallic to it. It was the only way on my darker skin for the color to actually look nude and not gray on me.
A vast majority of nudes are made with yellow or pink undertones in mind. Your undertone is olive which is why they look dead. You need a greener undertone. Also, so many other colors you’d look good other than white and red! Pinks, purples, oranges, greens, blues…don’t limit yourself!
@@KateandBree Well that helps a ton, I think you’re right and I’ve got to be olive because cool and warm undertone foundations don’t look right on me at all. Thank you so much! I will absolutely try those colors out asap!
Good info. I have a question! What do you think about glue on nails. There are so many pretty designs out there. I don’t know if you did a segment about glue on nails or not. Thank you
She has a video about full cover glue ons in her “nail tips” playlist on her page. The video from 4yrs ago goes over that. Very informative, I learned a lot from this channel. I hope that helps.
fantastic show of lacquers. and i think they are just a pretty as gels, but most people don't want to wait for them to dry. home friendly but for salon or suite's they can cost time restraints. unless you have done them for 15-20/30 years...lol
You know, I really don’t think applying nail polish, including the dry time is any longer than a gel polish application by going in out of the light. I really really should do a video timing these differences to really see.
I don't think there's any reason to? Stainless steel mixing balls are to prevent polish from getting too goopy when exposed to air or separating if it sits still for too long. Since gel cures in UV light and the bottles are opaque, it won't dry like regular nail polish and will remain liquid.
Weirdly enough, I don't have problems with the nail polish. It's the base coat and top coat that I have trouble with, mainly they pop off. But I have noticed that with different nail polish, there may be different consistencies and that took a bit to adjust to. The brush also makes a huge difference for me.
This is probably a silly question but what is the holo taco solid yellow Creme in the video you showed a lot..beautiful and bright..I can't find it online.
Hi Susie! Thanks for the video Could you please make a video about alergies or psoriasis under the nails??? I know you are not a dermatologist and I don´t want to bother you with this kind of petitions, but maybe you have learnt something about it during your career...I wish you could !! It would be much appreciated because I am struggling a little with my nails now. 😥
tbh. I'm sloppy. Showers and washing hands tho- Takes the polish off the skin. Dont' worry about perfection, just know it comes off skin better than nail :D ...Pratice will have less of the slop tho.
Thank you, Susie! I’m so bad with polish, especially those cream ones. I may snap up a glittery one! Does Halo Taco need a top coat or is it built into them already?
I love this one I have of big shiny silver discs in my top coat. Dries quick, lasts forever, hides most the polish, lol. I can't find another bottle of it though, such a shame. Looks so great against silver or black.
I dislike frost colors. I have more trouble with them than creams. They leave vertical stroke marks and something about them just seems out of date. I much prefer 2 coats of cream.
I always thought I was a non-frosty girl! But then I began seeing so many amazing colours available these days! The rest is history! 😉 Also, they make a great base colour for a holographic topper! I love using Cirque Colors We Trippy for that 😊
It is said that shaking polish causes bubbles, so I am not sure about that. Also minute or two between the coats is more like an hour or two for me and I am totally serious. I always apply a base coat and a top coat, too.
It's fine to shake polish, the bubbles go away if you let it sit for a minute afterwards. If polish wasn't meant to be shaken, there wouldn't be stainless steel mixing balls included in it.
@@pande1461 I meant shaking right before use. I shake mine a longer time before I paint my nails. You can also roll it between the hands. I do this if I want to use the polish right away.
@@elelle726 I find that it's best to shake the polish I plan to put on, before I apply base coat. It dries in less than a minute, so that's perfect. From personal experience, polish that is prone to having bubbles has gotten too gloopy and needs thinner, too.
My Aunt was a nail tech from 70's to 90's. She tested lots of drying ideas on me over the years starting with dipping my nails in cold water, using a standing fan on high, putting my hands under a hair dryer, using a hair spray and later nail drying spray, and quik dry nail topper. The nail topper was the only one that usually didn't disturb the polish and cut the time by 10 to 15 minutes. But having thin coats of polish and waiting 30 minutes before doing anything was always still the best to ensure a good set. 😊
Don’t use a hair dryer - heat does not work Often people dent there nails going into the nail dryer Honestly a fast drying top coat is helpful and or a fast drying polish Waving hands air drying is very effective
@@NailCareerEducation o didn't mean a hair dryer... but I meant I was looking for a good top coat that would dry the polish quickly. I'm impatient with my toes and want them dry quickly😁
@@nailkitty the only one I remember is when Cristine took an online exam for getting a nail tech license. It's more of a cameo than a collab but it's still funny
Does the brand(quality)of the colored gel polish matter when it comes to peeling off? Or does it just matter the brand(quality) of the base and top coat? Regards ❤
Not sure what I'm doing wrong with polishes, I've been using them for over 30 years but never could put on a second layer, no matter how long I let it dry, the second layer ALWAYS stays soft for hours, and by that time it's smudged or scratched because... well try not to move your hands or use them for hours. 2 minutes to dry? I've even waited a full day to put on a second layer, always the same problem. Used different brands, with me it just doesn't work. What do I do wrong? I have to switch to gel polishes, hopefully that would work but what a shame, I have 3 boxes full of nail polishes and there are always new pretty colors to buy...
Forgive my interjection, you need to use a decent quick-dry top coat - I used to be fully committed to Seche Vite, however I’m now on my third bottle of Glisten & Glow Top Coat and wouldn’t use anything else. From my own experience I do not recommend any others than the two mentioned. It dries super quick to a reasonable level, although I would still go easy with your manicure for the next 30mins or so. Also, I only paint one hand at a time, i.e. I’m left handed, so I start on my right hand, do a base coat, (Orly Bonder for the win!), give it one minute, then start on my colour. Take your time to be precise, and by the time you’ve done your first coat on all five nails, you are ready to start your next coat and so forth, I give maybe one minute extra for the final colour coat before going in with the top coat when the nail is touch dry. I find with both Seche Vite and Glisten & Glow, they set quick enough that I’m ready to commence on the other hand within minutes. (The only reason I stopped using Seche Vite is because there can be a little shrinkage, but that’s me being fussy, it is a great product and super quick drying- I think it’s designed to be applied when your colour is not quite dry 🤷🏼♀️). I hope that’s helpful 👍🏽☺️
I always thought I was a non-frosty girl! But then I began seeing so many amazing colours available these days! The rest is history! 😉 Also, they make a great base colour for a holographic topper! I love using Cirque Colors We Trippy for that 😊
it is one of Holo Taco's Shimmers. I think it's either twilight Shimmer or freezer burn. All of them are stunning. You might also want to check their unicorn skins. Amazing top coats as well. My fave is lunar unicorn skin.
I’ve gotten to the point of painting my nails in bed with no table 😜 I agree tho … any shimmer, glitter, holographic, pearl, metallic is 100x more forgiving and way easier of a formula to work with than cream. Cream I find you have to ace your nail prep or to me it looks like crap. I find brush makes a massive difference too. Some formulas are also insanely thick like thermals and magnetic. So I swatch those first on a nail swatch stick to see how it performs. Then I’m less frustrated. I find also if you stick to a 2/3 brands you really know and love the easier it gets.
Is there anything you can do to cut down on nail damage with acrylis nails? I got them for a cruise and only had them on for 3 weeks and it just killed my natural nails! Also, why cant you use different brands of base polish, and top coats together? Aren't the formulas in polishes similar?
The blue "glitter" you demo is not supposed to be used as a polish. It is one of the three first anniversary "flakie holo tacos" designed as a topper to add over a base colour. Also, all the Holo Taco polishes are designed to be finished off with a quick dry glossy topcoat, which really changes the sparkle and overall look of the polishes!
if you give me timestamps I can try to help (if the polishes you are looking for were in the square bottle = Holo Taco) I own all the polishes and am pretty familiar with the shades.
To have more glitter than clear nail polish apply it first on a sponge and then the sponge to the nail- the sponge will absorb the excess liquid and the glitter will be more dense. ;)
I was trying to paint my nails for an older crème nail polish I have, and it was a nightmare. So thick and goopy! Is that more common with those highly pigmented polishes as they get older?
Since nail polish dries by certain ingredients evaporating and being exposed to air, they likely will all need help as they get older. You can purchase nail polish thinner from a variety of sources (the most versatile and cost effective is from KBShimmer). Never use acetone to thin nail polish as this will irreparably ruin the polish. If you choose a different brand of nail polish thinner, cross check the ingredients of the thinner and the nail polish. You should never add ingredients to a nail polish that weren't in there to begin with.
I add 2 drops of nail polish remover to my thicker polish and it thins it. It does change the formula a smidge cos it takes longer to dry but it doesn’t affect the color.
@@Kaeracter I usually have one back up plus an open bottle of thinner. KBShimmer is also my go to. Even with shipping costs it's cheaper per ounce to get KBShimmer, plus it's supporting a small business.
@@lacemsboouse thinner only. Thinner adds the evaporated ingredients back to polish where as remover breaks it down and makes it i salvageable after a while

Love watching & learning from your videos👌🏼Could you recommend a good cuticle remover? My cuticles grow really high up my nail & are really hard😫💝
Great video Suzie. Your new hand model was very good and nice to see a guy with natural nails too. Very nice
Awesome video ❤
Can you do a video on getting nail polishes to dry faster?
The only ways are thin coats and using a quick dry top coat. There are also quick dry drops and drying sprays. But those are secondary to making sure your coats aren't thick and using a quality quick dry top coat. The best quick dry top coats are from indie brands - KBShimmer, Monarch, Polished For Days, Cuticula, Glisten & Glow, etc.
Also! A cleanup brush and acetone are your best friend!
Oh yes, that’s a great tip for application advice
Great video. Love your sweater.❤
Take me back to do that when I was a kid
This was very helpful!! Thank you!!
What's a good shear nude gel polish? Every time I think I've found one, it just doesn't look like what I see online or in pics on the nail.
Essie's Ballet Slippers. It was the favourite of HM The Queens. It really is a lovely colour.
Exceptional tip😊
I lovevthe purple shimmer it is purple ...mmmm and I love Nyack but very scared to put it on my nails myself Suzie..❤❤
You can always try it and if you don’t like it / it’s simply removed with remover
fantastic show of lacquers. and i think they are just a pretty as gels, but most people don't want to wait for them to dry. home friendly but for salon or suite's they can cost time restraints. unless you have done them for 15-20/30 years...lol
You know, I really don’t think applying nail polish, including the dry time is any longer than a gel polish application by going in out of the light. I really really should do a video timing these differences to really see.
Great video thanks ! Question why don’t they put that bead in gel polishes?.?.?????????.?
I think it’s Banana Medicine,but I’m not sure
@ginnyweatherbee7941 thank you. Just seems way brighter than banana medicine.
Yeah the blue glitter holo taco is basically a glitter top coat its beautiful
Dont' worry about perfection, just know it comes off skin better than nail :D
...Pratice will have less of the slop tho.
Thank you, Susie! I’m so bad with polish, especially those cream ones. I may snap up a glittery one!
Does Halo Taco need a top coat or is it built into them already?
Topper over a solid color can hide a multitude of mistakes
Ah, now you are talking about my favourite trick! Lol
I love using Cirque Colors We Trippy for that 😊
Thanks for sharing. 💙💙💙🤗
It is said that shaking polish causes bubbles, so I am not sure about that.
Also minute or two between the coats is more like an hour or two for me and I am totally serious. I always apply a base coat and a top coat, too.
You should try some quick dry spray between coats
I was told to avoid shaking it but roll it fast between your palms as it will create far less bubbles
Glitter polish is my favorite ❤️
Susie, when you worked on clients 30 years ago & you used regular nail polish, how did you get the polish to dry quickly?
In case she doesn't see this, my mom was a nail tech in the 90s, and she just used a quick dry top coat.
@@Lunaphire Thank you 🥰
My Aunt was a nail tech from 70's to 90's. 😊
I lov that you use Holo Taco! One of my fave brands
What is the brand and color of the green polish on your thumb please?
Not me watching Suzie using the holo taco nail polish me at 1:45 “AHH OMG THE HOLO TACO!!”📀 🌮 🥹
What do you recommend as a nail polish dryer that works well with all colors?
Don’t use a hair dryer - heat does not work
Often people dent there nails going into the nail dryer
Honestly a fast drying top coat is helpful and or a fast drying polish
Waving hands air drying is very effective
@@NailCareerEducation o didn't mean a hair dryer... but I meant I was looking for a good top coat that would dry the polish quickly. I'm impatient with my toes and want them dry quickly😁
You can also pinch the side walls while youre polishing to get a crisp edge
Great video
Question/ do you also shake your gel polishes?
Yes! I do although not often necessary
Just like it
i always love seeing you use Holo Taco! Canadians unite!
have you and Cristine ever done a video or collab together?
@@nailkitty the only one I remember is when Cristine took an online exam for getting a nail tech license. It's more of a cameo than a collab but it's still funny
Does the brand(quality)of the colored gel polish matter when it comes to peeling off? Or does it just matter the brand(quality) of the base and top coat?
Regards ❤
This is really helpful
I LOVE YOUR CONTENT!!!!
Can u please help me with how can I make my nails last longer as I'm someone working with water too much
Not sure what I'm doing wrong with polishes, I've been using them for over 30 years but never could put on a second layer, no matter how long I let it dry, the second layer ALWAYS stays soft for hours, and by that time it's smudged or scratched because... well try not to move your hands or use them for hours.
I also use Orly bonder base coat & Orly fast drying topcoat, only takes a 1/2 hr to paint my nails
Can you use a crackling medium on nail polish; or should you?😮
I hate frosts, I love the way shimmer but I hate seeing any of the nail through. I went my nail polish to be super opaque
I always thought I was a non-frosty girl! But then I began seeing so many amazing colours available these days! The rest is history! 😉 Also, they make a great base colour for a holographic topper! I love using Cirque Colors We Trippy for that 😊
I layer colors all the time
What is the name of that plum-colored Holo Taco with sparkles?
it is one of Holo Taco's Shimmers. I think it's either twilight Shimmer or freezer burn. All of them are stunning. You might also want to check their unicorn skins. Amazing top coats as well. My fave is lunar unicorn skin.
sorry I checked again. The shimmer she used over the dark purple (indigo away) is celestial lights. :)
Now I know why I can apply glitter polish sooo much better 🩷
Is there anything you can do to cut down on nail damage with acrylis nails? I got them for a cruise and only had them on for 3 weeks and it just killed my natural nails!
Also, why cant you use different brands of base polish, and top coats together? Aren't the formulas in polishes similar?
I just had a gel shimmer that cured about 2 min with base and top coat cracked so bad i pulled it off. What happened?
What is the color polish used at 6:52 in the video?
Looks like Curfew Crasher by Holo Taco
Very true. 💕
I can’t wait for the holotaco rock candy video
Dang, I wish you mentioned the colours you used, there were some very pretty combinations!
if you give me timestamps I can try to help (if the polishes you are looking for were in the square bottle = Holo Taco) I own all the polishes and am pretty familiar with the shades.
Thinner adds the evaporated ingredients back to polish where as remover breaks it down and makes it i salvageable after a while
I'll never to back to regular polish. Gel or dip.
I get that
It’s great for long term wear
Nail polish is just very different experience - it’s also much more user friendly
@@NailCareerEducation Hi!!! Yes, I'm in my mid 50s LMAO. I remember too well. I'm learning how to do nails now and it's so much easier for me. I bow to the queen lol.
The Holo Taco that’s purple-ish pinkish with gold shimmer, is that Curfew Crasher?? That color is so pretty, I think I’ve been sleeping on cerfew crasher
it is and it's on sale right now if you wanna get it :)
Cool 😀
