  • Here are three simple fills to get you started on your journey in jazz or alternatively, a way to add to your existing jazz vocabulary.
The concept here is based on the "leading Hand" approach to playing fills. Here's more on the subject:

Darryn delivers the clearest and most beautifully executed drum lessons on TH-cam! Great ideas, perfectly played and clearly explained! It doesn’t hurt that he is one of the greatest drummers to come out of Australia. Thanks man!

Thanks Gordo. You know I'm a massive fan of yours, too.

The great thing about fills like this it requires less physical movement around the kit so you can more seamlessly get back to the main ride cymbal, snare bass drum groove

Really nice. Some of your ideas I can pick up fairly quickly. Others, ( paradiddle diddle lick ) I understand the sticking but I am struggling trying to find my way out on the 1. Needless to say they are very fun and it makes me happy to practice. That is the point though. Thank you Darryn for your time.

You always come through with great samples. I have always been bothered with the snares rattling when toms are struck. At one time, I tried weaving a slip of paper in and out of the snare strands, but it didn't seem to help much, and it affected the sound of the snare drum.
By the way, looking more closely at your lamp, it seems to have the Mark's Brothers on it. The one I saw in the second hand store had Luarel and Hardy.

FWIW, I don't worry about that much. Rack tom sets off the snare. Ok, let it be!

Top notch lesson! Well excplained and very musical. Im learning the Jazz mambo beat from John Rileys bop book- any chance of a short lesson on fills in a latin jazz context? I suppose these could work played straight? Thanks again for such a good lesson.
