      Bill23799 Brand it right - get some clever TH-cam advertising going and who knows; your American-Skate Knife might just take off. Keep the costs down by asking the Chinese to churn it out for you - and hey, presto! Instance win ;-)

    Y'know, I think I would buy this. It's kind of like a skeletonized ulu. I'm all for going back to more "primitive" designs, and one based off of a stone tool is about as cool as you can get. This looks great for multifuncional uses, including perhaps self defense. Tell me that doesn't look like the most badass knuckleduster ever. Get a pair and box with 'em!

    Good question. I did not have any issues with the tool slipping or turning during use. The Paracord wrap is a very good grip and the weave makes a nice flat area on top. The only instability was when I was batoning with it. Hope this helps. -David

    This is a modern version of an old stone tool that served as a multi tool. Just like a Gerber or Leatherman multi tool each tool is actually by itself mediocre but as a package it is desirable. Flint knappers tried to reproduce this tool and as it turns out it was much more difficult and took much skill than creating arrowheads and spear tips. I love it, like my Gerber multi tool, even though I have better knives, pliers, and scissors individually, it is the multi use aspect that is it'e selling point.

    This looks to be an amazing CQB/martial arts tool. A combination brass knuckle/hatchet should allow the defender to pretty quickly dispatch the adversary in an up close and personal, non-friendly, encounter.

      Generally speaking, in Canada, anything that is primarily a deadly weapon and has by design, no other practical use is prohibited or restricted. But I think you could argue this since the manufacturers literally designed it as a knife/survival tool

    A knife would be better ... though this would make an insane brass knuckle type weapon. FYI ... a lot of stainless is not good for survival, especially 420 and 440a. Sure, good quality steel can rust, but a little iron oxide wont kill you.

    It's understandable that you might get positive feedback from hunters using this for skinning. It is a lot like the Ulu knife used to skin by the Inuit people....
    And it's handy for a tonne of stuff...but it is extremely limited too..certainly not an everyday carry knife...:-(

      Greg Kling , I'm not joking at all. I don't know why, just because he made a show teaching you how to survive different situations makes him a joke. He never says he is actually surviving there, he just puts himself into dangerous positions to show how to get out of them. And actually, a lot of the products with his name on it are very good.

    • @SteveSmith-sd5hq
      @SteveSmith-sd5hq 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Greg Kling , I have a couple of his Knives from Gerber, and their not the best, but they do what their supposed to do. I mean, I wouldn't depending my life on one, I just use them when I'm practicing my skills outside. And, I know the show is fake, he says it himself in interviews. He trys to teach you what you could do in specific situation. For example, in one episode he has one of his camera men dress up as a bear and pretend he's going to attack him. He does that to show what you can do to get out/avoid the situation. But I do agree, sometimes he can be a little over dramatic, but that's just to make the show more enjoyable.

    For all those idiots saying "just get a knife": the point of this was not to be your primary knife, it was meant to be a versatile chopping tool. I'd rather use this to baton through wood or make a hatchet or de-bark a branch with this then a regular knife. Its not a knife replacement, but a knife supplement.

    I have one and love it. Mine had two snaps on the sheath and one of them tore through the cloth the second time I opened it. I had to go out and buy a snap kit with an anvil to fix it. I bought it through Amazon and could have just sent it back but didn't feel it was worth it to just fix one snap.
    The velcro is definitely better.

    Made in China. 440 Stainless Steel is weak. Lashing holes are poorly placed making for an unstable ax head. WAY too expensive for a dollar's worth of metal and a nickel's worth of paracord.

    • @quinn4436
      @quinn4436 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Phil Herforth Just a knife. A good knife with exceptional edge retention, and well tempered. Maybe with a machete-like recurve for chopping. As for the handle, you want to make sure that blisters are nearly impossible. Blisters mean sores and sores mean infection. Something with a simple palm swell, no finger ridges. As for overall design, absolutely do NOT go with a folding blade. no moving parts. Above all, you want something that is sturdy and usable even after a lot of abuse when your fingers are barely strong enough to grip it anymore.
      You want simple and sturdy. If it looks more complicated than this, www.customknives.com/jonesbrothers/jk-23.jpg then it probably has useless features that just diminish it's handling and reliability.

    • @albinoasesino
      @albinoasesino 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Phil Herforth It depends on what you are going to use it for.
      If you're just going to carry it for daily urban use, then most likely any multi tool will do. (from a simple swiss knife to some military issue multi-plier tool). It really depends on what you see yourself to be doing. Screwing screws? Opening bottles? Nail clipping?
      If you are going out to a non-urban area with a group of people, a good knife would be enough. Learn more skills using the internet and basically, a knife is the tool which helps you gather more resources to make more tools for you.
      Like what Michael mentions, a good machete like item would be my choice as well. Something that fits in your hands fine, still retains grip when used with gloves, full tang, no movable parts. But make sure you have a sheath, and if you are going to belt it, put it somewhere reasonable.

      Just got into throwing a few weeks ago. Love it, but know nothing. I assume from your comment that stainless is not good for a knife, which goes against what would have been my guess. If that is so, then why? Is stainless too hard and brittle? And am guessing if you do not like stainless that you probably have a recommendation as to what material is best, if so, would you please let me know what that would be? I want to make an array of throwing items now, as the cheap stuff I got to get going was okay, now I want more and better, but do not care to dig that deep. Not saying my knives would be that great, but saw a sharpened two pound throwing spike for like 35 bucks. I know that I can sharpen a two pound metal rod on both ends in minutes with a grinder, and I have metal everywhere. Thanks for your comment as it got me to thinking.

      stainless is soft. stainless is good for everything except fine, thin edges. there's plenty of information on the internet as im no expert. but I do know, however, stainless knives 90% of the time, suck.

    • @corymontgomery9766
      @corymontgomery9766 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jesse Leonard Low versions of stainless steel (400-435) are generally soft but are not made for tools and unless you get a ripoff knife you will almost never find any of these steels in stainless knives. Stainless knives generally have some grade of 440 stainless steel which comes in 3 grades. 440A is about as hard as most 1095 steel (it depends on the heat treatment used) 440B is slightly harder than 440A and 440C is much harder than 1095 steels. As long as the blade is under 8 inches and thicker than 1/8 of an inch it should be fine being stainless. if the blade is too thin stainless tends to snap.

    This knife looked haggard trying to baton through that log. Also, I'm not sure what you were trying to carve here, but that was definitely NOT a feather stick! Not to mention the makeshift hatchet was just laughable. Come on!
    It seems like the only thing this ridiculous tool is good for is skinning game or cutting pizza.
    This tool looks more like a 2 out of 5 stars. Can you say Gimmick?

      Absolutely, and I have to say, the Inuits knew their stuff. Of course, the ulu was a very specialized skinning, scraping, chopping and "woman's" knife. The Inuit lady of the house's "all purpose kitchen knife".

      MrRugercat45 I own a stainless steel Ulu. It was a gift from my Brother when he was stationed in Alaska. Love it as a kitchen implement.

    Fascinating. This is unique enough I would want to try one first - however as someone who likes to save weight backpacking this certainly seems like it would chop veggies and perform some light hatchet tasks while being short and light. Eight feet also seems like a nice length of paracord storage. And if I don't like it the price is cheap enough I can just use it at home in the kitchen or camper as a pizza slicer.

    What would make this better is if it came with an attachable/detachable handle that is engineered for the blade, but if you wanted to use the blade alone you could easily remove it. But other than that it's a pretty innovative blade.

    The company did a simple video on how to rewrap the paracord. It's actually a very simple knot.

    Really interesting video, its amazing how in this modern world we seem to be looking towards tech that our ancestors used millennia ago (as well as the stone tool inspiration for the design, the Ulu knife used by aboriginal Inuit??). I'm sure it would perform adequately in the field, but am not convinced about the lack of a 'point' , maybe for a later model, my preference though, thanks for posting!

    This reminds me of primitive tools I have seen in museums and documentaries. The basic design goes back to the neolithic age and has lasted in various forms to this day. This tool would not be for everyone, but it would be quite ignorant not to recognize its significance and usefulness. Thanks for the review!

    It' actually quite a clever design for a utility knife. That sort of perpendicular grip is not uncommon for traditional knives in some regions. This shape is very good for chopping up food, which is the *main* purpose of any knife, survival situation included, and you can still use it for wood carving, as shown. And you can, indeed, use it to make a makeshift axe in case you lose you main one. Quite a useful thing to have lying in your backpack, honestly.

    This knife is very nice. Not only can you use it for skinning animals, chopping, etc, it's very easy to sharpen since it doesn't have any serrated edges.

  • @MrLeonidas0001
    @MrLeonidas0001 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    Man yeah, make this bad boy in carbon steel and maybe a little bigger and it'd be really great! Maybe add some serrations somewhere. The ECO Hawk has the same idea - very useful and VERY compact. Cool!

    Maybe I'm wrong, but when you stuck the Opinel into the tree stump at the end, it looked like it wasn't locked - could fold on your hand or fingers doing that. Apart from that, great video. Not sure I need the new tool, but it looks very nice.

    Interesting and kudos for the new invention. Obviously the inventer was thinking outside the box. That being said, I would definitely add a removal handle. If the stick was split or better yet a one sided groove the hatchet performance would be greatly improved.

    • @antidulvian666
      @antidulvian666 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not sure you could call it a 'new invention' since the ulu has been around since roughly 2500 BCE. Just saying.

    You gotta admit, it does look pretty menacing, not that that's a bad thing. Take a SOG seal team elite for example, it's kinda the opposite, it's meant for fighting but has been pretty big in the survival knife world. It's not really a bad thing for this blade to function well for survival and hunting, and have it be an exceptional self defense weapon.

    Cool tool, but I think I prefer the Hoods Woods ATAX made by Tops and designed by Ron Hood. The Atax has a similar cutting edge, but has many more tools and functions built into it.

    This would be great to keep in the glove box of the car, or thrown in my camping gear, but not sure I would ever use something like this as a primary blade. I did like the Pizza getting cut, I bet it would be great for that!
