I'm friends with a couple of his college teammates.. he had mental illness at Nebraska.. not sure if it started there but my buddies noticed it..
If Joe Mixon keeps playing around with his character, he could end up on the Lawrence Phillips route. He’s a living 🚩 and the Bengals keeping him around as if Dick Vermeil controls their team makes things complicated for the Bengals. Keeping it real, of course.

At 25:11 one the greatest runs I've ever witnessed live. The acceleration,lateral movement,and the ridiculous juke on #9 in traffic,simply amazing. RIP Mr Phillips.

It was so unfortunate what happen to him later in life, but when Ray Lewis says Lawrence Phillips was his toughest opponent Pro or College, your special.
He made Ray Lewis do a double-take in the 1995 Orange Bowl. When I heard that, I did one as well.
I was a huge fan of LP... now when you look back he was a perfect blend of Reggie Bush and Adrian Peterson... speed and power was crazy. R.I.P. to that man. Nebraska was on fire for real. 💯

it was the best move in RB/football history IMO ... EVERY ounce & instinct of your football soul says he's going to top speed - his HIPS VIOLENTLY PRESS FOR MAX BOOST OFF THE CUT - THEN BOOM, RIGHT LEG GOES DEAD, and he's back to the left leg (or vice versa) which he had already loaded for full burst to 4.4 - LEGIT 4.4 SPEED i.e. he carried his top speed for 20-30-50 yards once he got the juice ... cuz he was always 1 step away from getting back to those RPMs ... AND never, ever ran out of gas ... KANSAS game w/ 3 QB'S!! out ... Phillips gets 41-44 carries for like 205 or 250 when literally every single play Osborne & LP & the Jayhawks/DC knew he was getting the rock ... 5 ypc ... - so you had to sacrifice yourself as the LB/DB every time & ya'll both knew it & LP did it just so clean too - just bravo kid ... unstoppable.
Tommy Frazier & Lawrence Phillips was the 2 all time best QB/RB combo at Nebraska.... R.I.H. L.P.

Phillips was a great RB. His running style always reminded me of Walter Payton.
AMEN - that is EXACTLY who LP was .. far too big for that speed, far too patient for that aggression at the point of attack, far too smooth for that much power.
Lawrence Phillip was a freak of nature in college football.
I remember watching the huskers play their hearts out in the 90s and being a kid watching these guys play made life that much better.
As a 35+ year Husker fan, I CANNOT thank you enough for this video. He should've started the 1994 Orange Bowl against Florida State.

His talent level was a perfect 10 . I was just noticing how patient he was and the natural grace he ran with . He was a really thick boned guy that looked like he wore on people , then that two step juke with the 4.4 speed was too much .
This man just couldn't keep his anger in check. Dude was a BEAST, and even showed those talents as a pro. #RIP, Lawrence.
I've seen some tons of great college RB's and I must admit that he is definitely top I've seen in college. Barry Sanders, Bo Jackson, Herschel Walker are definitely in my top 5....
Although he had off the field problems, The fact that he was living in a halfway house when he was found by Nebraska is amazing no matter how you look at it. And all these years later to find out that he was named an All-American makes his story that much more proud for me to be a husker fan. This kid had nothing and ended up playing for one of the premier teams in the country. Thank god that our coaching staff found him and at least he was able to get out of the environment he grew up in. So sad his life ended by Ed way it did but at least he had the chance to see and go places a lot of people never will. Rest In Peace L. P. Go Big Red

@Shane Foster maybe but he was still a person who had a rough life. if only he could of got real help maybe things would be different. but regadless he was probably the Best NU Back to touch the field even. but there's so many like him in our society if only we change it and make every kid not have to go threw those things. I mostly blame society (one of the reasons why im moving far away from it) the people around him and him.

Greatest runningback to ever touch a football.
One of the greatest running tandems if not the greatest running qb & rb duo of all time. Frazier alone was a beast it’s still hard to say who was better out of him and Charlie ward who had a few great tandems as well.
I've always felt that if LP played earlier in the 1994 Orange Bowl against FSU that the Huskers would have won the national championship that year. We will never know. RIP Lawrence. You brought a lot of joy into the lives of many, many Husker fans. Thank you.

@@adquin4 Yes, he played in the 1994 Orange Bowl, but not early enough. I think that hey did not put LP into the 1994 Orange Bowl until the second half (if I remember correctly). Calvin Jones started and played at least half of the game before LP was put in and energized the running game.

They all hung out at his house. Ricky played with multiple RBs that can make this list alone in college and pros!

PockyCandy It was a good idea. You're taking historical looks at players based on their play. We have to take the good with the bad. It's not a popularity contest. Everyone knows the bad things he did, but people still appreciate his greatness.

I didn't start watching College and its historic games till 2013; and now I'm seasoned by TH-cam Edits CONDENSE the games to pure action too! Some HD versions require LOTS of Fast Forwarding; and Im a rewind guy I need to see blitzes and run blocking schemes 2-3 times.

Damn shame he wasted his life. He was a beast.
He had so many qualities as a running back, speed, power, but his greatest quality was the ability to make subtle changes in direction without losing any speed. He also had an ability to stop on a dime and accelerate to top speed within a couple of steps. He would have been one of the all time greats if he could have beaten his demons.
Demons were BIG BAD and UNCHALLENGED by the authorities in his life.
What a terribly sad and tragic life...

Good man, awesome player, super athlete who had just too many Demons to contemplate. His childhood and the rejection of his mother scared him for life. He didn't trust an affection or someone love. Sad, but he should have been a voice and a Victor not a victim. RIP my dear friend! Smile because you did touch my life.

Tommy Frazier was a beast
He could of had it all, but he threw it down the toilet. He probably had CTE, but by the time he got sent to prison essentially for life, he had to be locked up forever. He was a danger to society and even killed a man in prison.

Helluva runner. Likeable guy. Wrote impressive letters from prison. But he had demons. Still, he wasn't as big of an asshole as OJ or Aaron Hernandez. And his original prison sentence was too harsh. So he hit a teen with his car: Teens are annoying as hell!

Lawrence Phillips was a great college player who had the potential to be a good pro football player--but he was also his own worst enemy (ALL the trouble he got into off the field, for example)...

I called this series of videos "Classical Tailback" because they were classic runners, and there was supposed to be classical music playing in the background of the each video. I eventually scrapped that idea (although you can still hear the remnants of that idea in the intro and outro, when Gymnopedie plays) but ended up keeping the name. I may go back and just change it to classic tailbacks though.

Everyone thinks Tom Osborne can do no wrong. If he had a PhD then he should have known LP needed help. It would have been better for LP if they got him help for his childhood trauma and made that a priority over football. T.O. Is not the angel we all want him to be. He used LP like a mule to win games and winning games was TO’s priority. His players were doing drugs and steroids and he looked the other way.

As a lifelong Rams fan, LP didn't amount to much even when given the opportunity because he didn't have confidence in the Rams OL. Holes were small and closed quick not like at Nebraska.
