In entomology class in college when I learned that mantids are essentially predatory roaches and termites are essentially colonial social roaches my mind was blown.
fun fact: cockroaches and mantises are closely related, mantises evolved from cockroaches. If you look at the their anatomy you will realize they actually look quite similar and a mantis is sort of just an elongated roach with raptorial legs.
Once I saw a mantis flying around my kitchen ceiling light. I lifted my finger up to it to invite it to perch there. To my amazement it did. I then placed it on the kitchen counter. I saw its head turning to watch me as I moved. I slowly moved my finger in front of it from side to side and the mantis swayed from side to side like a pendulum on a metronome. That did it. I've been in love with these creatures ever since.
I found one flying around by street and walkway lights last night in town. It was bigger than pretty much all of the mantis in the video. It looked closest to the European Mantis but I'm in Western Washington. When flying it was easily bigger than a hummingbird. I got to scoop it up when it landed on the ground and it relaxed on my hand for some photos and videos.
As someone who keeps them as pets, I've gotta add that the Devil's Flower Mantis, although it looks intimidating, gets scared easily and prefers to avoid any prey that doesn't fly, as they're specialized in catching flying prey. Also, they're pretty goofy when it comes to climbing, as they lack the necessary components on their feet, the "tarsi, that would normally allow insects to climb smooth surfaces etc.
Use to have 6 mantises as pets when I lived in a warmer area. Very intelligent and cool critters. The large ones can and will cut you open like a knife. Not lethal but not pleasant.
Absolutely!! Against my sound advice one of my childhood friends unwittingly grabbed a large female mantis. He rapidly entered the “find out” phase as the insect latched on with its forelegs and ripped into his thumb with its razor-sharp mandibles. He never made that mistake again.
This channel really knows how to benefit off of trends. Mantis vids have been blowing up like that clip of i think it was joe rogan on his podcast of one killing a hummingbird
if i was a insect i would be scared on mantises but as a certified homosapian i consider them cute in the same way as whipping spiders both look so goofy and the jumping spiders are cute too the whipping spider is just a example of people putting arms on creatures that shouldn't have arms
Great watch! I love mantises and didn't realize how many species there are. I rarely see these guys in the wild. I finally saw one somewhat recently as the little green inch long guy, probably a baby, fell off a tree on me, just a typical mantis so I picked him up and let him walk on me and do his little swaying dance lol! Very cool to see as I probably haven't seen one in ten years or more.
The Orchid and Spiny Mantis are beautiful, hard to pick a favorite. Cleverly made to fit their environment, and tgey look so cute with their front two legs up in the air. They are truly amazing, I saw a footage on a TH-camr site, Classified Captures. Where it showed a praying mantis near a Hummingbird feeder, the mantis caught the Hummingbird with no problem. I didn't think an insect could catch and eat a bird. The pray mantis are the true Chameleon of the insect world.
Awesome video. By far my favorite insect and top 2 fighting style. I think that ancient tong long looks more like a country cicada. Again thanks for another goodun.
As a small child, I used to love to feed the garden mantis around our homes. Cripple a spider or grasshopper and place it close to a mantis and watch it feed. Living just a year... that sucks 😢
Same here. I kept one in a terrarium one summer & became a bookie at age 8 as I took bets from all the neighborhood kids during my daily afternoon “mantis vs wasp smackdown!” It was my first side hustle; must more lucrative than selling lemonade in the hot sun.

As it goes on to describe some other 4th reason. xD Great narrative mistake, I'm surprised I didn't see it mentioned already in comments.
personally, one of my favorite mantises was probably the lower or the orchid praying mantis because it’s so beautiful and resembles an orchid and I know that that something that a lot of people might think is a really basic pig because it’s a well-known mantis but honestly just because it’s well-known doesn’t necessarily mean that it deserves a level seven rating I think you should definitely be much more higher at least level 15 it has an impressive size and it is a pretty ruthless killer as we know it can eat a lot of wasps
True...I think physics may lessen there danger at that size but still they would F$ck you up in a millisecond still...and they are already verasious eaters so imagine that size they would be psychopathicly hungry...remember movie starship troopers ?...if your younger gen than me watch the film lol...cheers
11:39 Level 7 looks more like a winged big mouth monster (lizard) with big teeth to me... it's even got blacks spots where's eye would be and it's head being the nose.
Orchid mantids also can attract insects without a flower as it reflects UV light brighter than any other flower as insects see in UV light and flowers use this as a landing pad indicating where the nectar is

Ah I’m sorry for your loss dude. As a fellow mantis keeper, I know how attached it’s possible to get to these beauties, and then they break your heart all too quickly with their short lifespans 🥺 I’m sure your mantis friend had a wonderful life with you, safe from predators and sudden weather changes, and with an abundance of carefully chosen prey just for him/her ❤️

Thanks for sharing guys. Seems half of what I learn as an adult come from the TH-cam comments section lol
While the thought of a cockroach infestation is disgusting, the thought of a mantid infestation is nightmare fuel! 😱
