$740,000 salary a yr no matter what team he signs with, but only the Dodgers have Othani ,Yoshi, and the biggest endorsement deals where he would make 40 or more million a yr. Posting fee does not count against salary. So for the Dodgers he is practically free no matter what the posting fee is.
The comments I read on Japanese threads is that he's never pitched through a whole season yet, so he's still unproven in that regard. Yamamoto won mvp 3 years in the row, and Sasaki is not yet up to that level.
@Airsole23 I hear ya but goes both ways, belive me I lean your point I was a big Yamamoto skeptic as a dodger fan no less but obviously I was wrong, but I'm the type of I gotta see it a full year first, but time will tell. Kid is still young
First there’s the whole posting issue. He quit the player’s union last year which is not something you usually do. Then a few days ago he rejected his team’s offer to extend the his contract. But whether he gets posted is the club’s prerogative. This might be the start of things getting ugly. If he thinks rejecting the contract will make him an FA obviously he’s wrong, not even enough years for domestic FA. Rumor is that the team suspects he’s been in contact with the Dodgers and if so that’s tampering and _they and the NPB are pissed._ (Some also suspect this is behind MLB’s order before the season for its teams to suspend working agreements with foreign teams. NPB teams had to withdraw such operations and thus other teams are pissed too.) As such as things stand I don’t think the team will post and let him go. _It’s pretty strange, to say the least, in the US you guys are talking how good is Sasaki who’ll get him as if somehow it can be done against his team’s will._ Worst case is he won’t play at all next season. But even besides his availability there’s a problem with him as a player. Yes, he’s talented, he’s got a fast pitch, but he lacks physical endurance. His arm gets fatigued and his rib gets hurt. You should check how many games and innings he pitched in each of his 5-year career so far. He hasn’t had a single year where he pitched throughout the season, never pitched qualifying innings Stark contrast with Yamamoto who was a true ace, best in the whole NPB winning all the pitching titles and gave his team the league title 3 years in a row with one NPB championship. His team and fans were thankful for all he’d done and happy to give him a warm sendoff when he chose FA. Not so with Sasaki. Don’t think his team didn’t have plans for him. From the beginning they said it’s going to be a five year plan to make him a solid starter, and they’ve been patient. The first year he wasn’t good enough to pitch in the top league. This past season was his fourth year to pitch and his coach -who’s a great communicator who values candid discussions- said ok this year you must pitch in rotation whole season, but he couldn’t. He had to be removed from the roster twice. His physical condition sometimes seems to take longer to recover, and critics would say of course he’ll look good after a long rest while the other pitchers are rotating. At one point he said it’s too tough for him to rotate _with six days rest_ and his coach had to take him off the roster so as not to disrupt the rotation. And yet he’s been talking about wanting to play in MLB so it’s no wonder some people are cynical. And the thing is we’re not even sure if he really feels he needs to improve his durability. He doesn’t work out a lot because he thinks getting bulky will mess up his balance and mechanics. Ok, then does he have some other plan to improve, or does he think it’s ok if he doesn’t pitch that much, only when he feels he’s in best form. If he’s thinking, once I get to the majors I’ll bust my ass, I doubt if it works like that when it’s much tougher (slippery and bigger ball, more games, longer travel, batters better at hitting fastballs, more punishing to tipping pitches). Very different from Shohei or Yamamoto who’ve both worked persistently to step up their games. It’s very important that you respect your team and these two have done that, so they’ve earned it that they move on, they’re both highly respected themselves.
As great of a talent as Roki Sasaki is, there are some serious durability concerns. I expect him to have TJ surgery in the next couple years and will probably be on an innings limit too. When you throw 100 mph and also throw a splitter, it is inevitable.
Comparing Roki to Yoshi is like like saying Sienese right now is better than Prime Kershaw how does a 3 time MVP 3 time sawamura (Cy young ) is worse than an unproven player just because of velo
The criteria for Sawamura seem more subjective though as the NPB committee refused to award to any player this year, because no one met the "lofty" standards set in 1950.
At some point, the law of diminishing returns has to kick in. If you are paying an outfielder 60 million a year for 12 years, is his production going to be worth the cost? For that sum, you can address two to three roster issues. The value for starting pitchers moving forward is going to decline as their innings per game goes down. Why pay a pitcher 35 million if he's only going to give you four innings?
roki declining to sign a new contract with the marines means very little. it just means that he can’t play professional baseball in japan or us (and perhaps other leagues as well) until he signs a new contract with the marines. generally speaking, i think the local marines fans want him to stay and people in japan overall are either indifferent or split on whether they want to see him in mlb early, so it really doesn’t make sense to let him go now. maybe an equivalent would be for the padres to place jackson merrill on an unconditional release waiver. and u can probably argue that it’s even worse than that given the magnitude of the potential posting fee they would be losing. that’s how irrational it would be for the marines if they were to post him now. roki is under team control until the end of 2029 season. npb free agency is after 9 years for high school grads, and 8 years for college, etc. the marines would not want to post him until 1 year remaining in the contract, 2029 season. or 2027 at the earliest (he just turned 23 and a npb player is not eligible for a major league contract until 25). the current posting system is structured in a way that teams have very little incentive to post their star players until they are eligible for major league free agent contracts in the mlb, or age 25. keep in mind ohtani’s posting fee for his minor league contract was grandfathered from the prior system and nippon ham got $20m. npb team owners are generally large corporations and not individuals so they have a fiduciary duty. in the case of roki, it’s lotte. also, not sure why people keep talking about who has more international bonus pool money. these are players coming from the “majors” of another league. they are not high school grads. 1-2 million dollar difference means very little to them.
Exactly. Guys in the US are talking about him as if his availability is a given, which is not the case at all. If the Dodgers or any other team have been in contact that’s tampering and of course it’s a big no-no. Americans have no idea how _his team and the NPB are pissed._
Sasaki hasn’t even pitch 1 full year. He hasn’t cleared quality innings. Comparison to Yamamoto sounds insulting to me. Also the biggest issue is that he still belongs to Lotte Marines and needs an approval from the team to be posted. For Lotte it’s almost infeasible to let him go as they won’t get enough return if Sasaki leaves the team under 25 years old.
Hahahaha imanaga out pitched Yamamoto so did Senga I love Yamamoto but Roki when he on is the best of them all. Dont believe me? He pitched a perfect game in his first game as a pro
He hasn,t pitched whole year for sure but he is stil young and not throwing many pitches is welcoming news for whoever get him caz his arm is stil healthy. If he were American, there must be pitcing limits for his age.
Can someone explain why he is a restricted player. I don’t understand the Japanese baseball system, but would like to know why some players are free like Yamamoto and this guy isn’t. Thank you.
I think it's because of how the rules in the Japan league are structured. Basically, they have to stay a certain amount of years before they become a free agent, like Yamamoto. Roki hasn't hit that minimum amount of time in the Japan league, so he can only get at most a couple million (it's basically a rule MLB and the Japan Baseball league agreed, too). Ohtani did this, too, when he left Japan for the Angels. That's my understanding, at least.
Japanese players with nine years as a professional can become an international free agent - no posting fee required. Yamamoto had seven years in. He did require a posting fee. The Dodgers paid nearly $51M to the Orix Buffaloes just to be able to sign Yamamoto.
Roki is below 25 years old, afaik if you are below 25 from npb you will be subjected to intl signing bonus and at most you will only be paid league minimum. Ohtani was one of the recent players who was subjected to it since he was below 25 when he signed with the angels back then. Yamamoto was 25 when he signed with dodgers so he was not subjected to it and got a massive contract.
Apparently the American hype about Sasaki is higher than his actual achievements in Japan, he’s not won any of top prestigious awards not even close to Yamamoto, he may have ceiling but his performances are not saying that.
I don't think Skasaki is worth more than Yamamoto. Sasaki's fastball is remarkable, but many guys are in the same category in MLB. Yamamoto is way better.
Most likely, but he’s taking a very big risk here coming to the US the same way Shohei did. Except Shohei is a two way player, and if he blew his arm and couldn’t pitch anymore, back with the Angels, he still would have made big money if he just DH’d the rest of his career. Roki may not even get a big money contract because he’d be 30 before he gets that unrestricted free agent contract. But these Japanese players man, especially Sasaki and Ohtani, they make big money from advertising deals that it doesn’t matter if they don’t get that big money contract. Shohei earned 50Mil last year from his advertising deals alone, imagine how much they’ll pay him after his WS win.
For the Yankees, Soto or no Soto, when Roki becomes available, the Yankees need to go all in for him. Roki, Yoshi, and Ohtani cannot be on the same team. That's just insane to have a three-headed monster in the rotation and one of them is an MVP with the bat. ATL likely isn't in on him either way, so, I don't need to worry about where he goes, as long as it isn't to the Mets. lol It should be interesting to see where he lands, though; been following him for the last 3 or so years on instagram and seeing clips of him pitch. Should be amazing, but maybe see a transition period to MLB.
