Pretty sure he just came away from that still thinking that timezones are all north south sections of the earth, and somehow we've manage to have 25 timezones with a 24 hour day. There's no way in hell he understands any of the nuance of what made him technically right.

The best part is that he's actually right, because time zones aren't as simple as chat thinks they are. There are a couple extra time zones in the pacific ocean that means it can span over 24 hours into the days before and after UTC.

I did the math for the Cheers VHS subscription. Here's what i got:
There are 273 episodes in Cheers
Each tape contains 3 episodes
273 divided by 3 is 91
I will be subtracting 1 from 91 because the cost of the first tape is different from the subsequent ones.
First Tape Cost
$4.95 for the tape plus $2.45 for shipping and handling gives us a reasonable price of $7.4 for the first tape.
Subscription Cost
Ok, so each tape after the first one costs $19.95, plus $2.45 for s&h.
$19.95 + 2.45 = $22.4 for each tape after the first one. However, this is a subscription, so multiplying the cost of one tape ($22.4) with 90 (the number of tapes) gives us a whopping $2016.
Adding the costs of both the first tape and the subsequent tapes gives us a final price of...
$2023 and 4¢.

There is actually a place with 3 potential days. Kiribati is an island nation in the Pacific that straddles the date line, being in parts, +14 hours (usually only goes up to +/-12). So for example Kiribati celebrates new years while people in Hawaii are at 10pm on Dec 30th.

What he is saying at the start about time zones being spread between 3 days isn't crazy since there is a -12 UTC and a +14 UTC (26 hours difference) so actually it would be 11pm Monday in the -12 UTC time zone and 1am Wednesday in the +14 UTC time zone.

+14 UTC is just clock trickery, they're 2 hours ahead because they feel like it. I could announce my house is +1000 UTC, that doesn't mean I'm a month an a half in the future.

So both chat and Jerma were kind of right here. It *is* a 24-hour cycle, and if we were to just go based on the sun it would indeed be impossible for there to be three simultaneously-observed days
*But* if you look at a map of time zones you will notice that they are *absolutely not* clean lines evenly dividing up the planet. They curve and jut out in wild ways, around country borders and islands. This is because the *actual* timezones we observe are somewhat based around the movement of the sun, but they're far *more* influenced by politics and a surprising amount of economics. *Because humans made things inconsistent* with all this meddling and switching things around to suit their own needs, that's what makes room for there to be three simultaneously-observed dates.
You'll notice that one of the times given by the person explaining why Jerma was right was labeled as "UTC+14". This is a fantastic example of what I'm talking about: in an ideal system, it would range from UTC-12 to UTC+12, making 24 hours. However, since we decided that wasn't good enough for our purposes, we stretched out the bounds to fit our experience, creating a UTC+14 timezone which is what makes this possible
(By the way, it is actually a good thing we've changed stuff: politics and economics is a lot more relevant to the human experience than astronomical fact, and just because a possible system lines up perfectly with our Earth's rotation doesn't mean it's actually practical. Map Men has a great video on time zones I highly recommend checking out if you want to hear more about this)

For those who are thoroughly lost by the concept of 3 simultaneous days on earth, here is the real explaination: The country of Kiribati artificially created two extra time zones on earth for their country only, that way the entire country could be in the same time zone. So the fact that 3 days are present at once is because someone artificially moved a timezone two hours east. Not because of any naturally occurring circumstance where there is more than a 24 hour day. My brain was melting at the way Jerma logically came to this conclusion, and it makes sense to me now.
