    I am blessed in that where I live in a very small, rural community in Northeast Iowa - we have Amish farms all around us. Most of the farms have dry goods stores and a wonderful selection of things like raw honey, free-range chicken and eggs and bulk items as well. They are the ultimate in 'preppers' and as I get to know more of them, by frequenting their stores, I am really happy that doing business with them is part of my routine. I feel it keeps me grounded as well. We also have an amazing Amish hardware store and you can get almost anything you would ever need! In fact, I need to go there this afternoon and pick up a new 240v. electric heating element for my water heater that just bit the dust! Only $10. Love their prices too. They don't gouge like the larger hardware stores - and they're very helpful!

    I never heard of the Amish, until I came to the U.S. from a former soviet block country, 40 years ago. When I learned who they were and about their lifestyle, I felt a very closeness to them. I grew up mostly like them. Religion was not allowed by the government, we couldn't go to church, but the community was like this. We helped each other, we grew our own food, we traded with each other, what we didn't have. We pretty much lived cash free, we paid the doctor with chickens or eggs. I wish, I could live close by them, even if not belonging, but just observing their lifestyle.

      @Alex Gregis Don't say most Amish. Most Amish respect their animals as part of God's Creation and take very good care of them. Some Amish sects (the Swartzentruber) are not only horrible to their children and women, but also their animals. Many Amish churches do not have Communion with the Swartzentruber sect... That means they may not even visit each other's churches. There are good and bad among the Amish just as there is everywhere. However, PA needs much stricter animal welfare laws, then puppy mills could be investigated more.

      The Amish still have an Ingalls style life style from the 1870a 1980s and 1990s. Then they used a minimal number of mechanised tools and children went to one room school houses. American farming styles changed but the Amish have kept change to a minimum Laura ingalls Wilder however had a motor car, a fitted kitchen running water , farm machinery and electricity on her farm in Missouri until her death in 1957. In their last home in De Smet, Ma and Pa had electricity and a wall telephone in 1915. Keeping an 150 years old life style is not always a good thing.

    There are issues in every society but the Amish seem to overcome just about everything. I completely respect and admire them. They are proof that diversity is not a strength. When people have common morals and goals and beliefs, they are more willing to help their neighbors and sacrifice for their community. When people have different beliefs and goals they are less likely to go out of their way to help someone. This is the main reason that the Amish are not only maintaining their communities, but they are growing their communities. They have grown tremendously in the past century and are continuing to grow even while faced with the temptations of the modern world. Diversity is not a strength. Likemindedness and common beliefs and goals are what make people strong and united more than anything else. It is also what makes people more successful on the whole.

    I almost bought a Amish house for sale, But i don't know how to live without electricity.
    I imagine i could figure it out, sense i am from the country, and have spent most of my life outside.
    It would be a new world for me to learn to live off grid.
    I lived with my grandfather on his farm, but he had electricity in his house.
    He didn't watch TV, but he listened to his radio.
    The main reason i didn't buy the house, Because it didn't have any trees on the land.
    I would need wood for the wood burning stove or fireplace.
    I could have bought other land with trees, But transporting wood it time and money.
    So i will keep working and buy a small land to work on till i retire, Then i will move out to the land when i retire.
    I need to keep my city job to keep money coming in.
    I don't have the money to keep a farming land going as a business.
    But i can use the land to grow food in the summer times.
    Will save me much money having extra food to eat in the summer.
    And i love the country.
    Much better place to live then the crowded noisy city's.

    • @littlegoobie
      @littlegoobie 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The house was too far from city power to run a line in? I know people who live off the grid and they have battery banks in out buildings that charge on gas generators and, to some extent, solar panels. Solar panels have come a long long way in the past 5 years. look into the project again. You're out of luck for the wood heat unless you can maybe pay to get home heating oil delivered.

      I knew a guy and his house was 300 feet from the power pole and they wanted $35,000 for a 300 foot run and that was 10 years ago. He used solar and a battery and a generator for backup and he has no monthly fee to pay.
      I on the other hand have grid power. I installed solar with battery and I started to heat with wood which is cut and split already, but I have to pick it up. The wood for one season is $200 and my only heat source.

    • @littlegoobie
      @littlegoobie 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@FloryJohann It was a similar situation for a friend of mine. he needed 50 yards of poles from the main line on a service road. If i remember right, it was $9000 to run the line in. This was probably close to 20 years ago. He had a neighbor in another off-grid log cabin also without power. He asked the neighbor to split that infrastructure cost and they could both have power. The neighbor said he didn't want it. The problem is, once it's done, you can't stop anyone else from connecting to it and that's what the neighbor did.

      Their lifestyle has to do with refraining from sin... essentially, making use of technological conveniences makes one more susceptible to commuting more sin... sin is essentially anything that is bad for a person... an example might be how we have convenienced ourselves into dietary choices based on convenience and it takes its toll on most of our lives in terms of poor health and lack of well being... this is not Gods Will for us. The Amish aim to create a society in which it is easier to make the righteous choice and refrain from sin. This does not mean that those of us who drive cars and keep food in a refrigerator are sinners. Although some of the Amish may believe that. I know of some who’ve left and their parents are concerned about their souls. But I’m sure some Amish realize the tech is not a sin and understand the real purpose for rejecting most of modern technology. But in the end, the more tech we get and the more they carryon without it, the more valuable THEY are to humanity IMO ... it’s valuable to have people around who know how to survive like that. Maybe I’m getting off topic.

    It’s weird that they refer to the Amish in the opening as a “utopian society”. No Amish person believes in utopia. The Amish, and other Christian sects, recognize the imperfect nature of man. They believe that man cannot be made perfect in this life, only forgiven his sins. They believe man is made perfect through He who is perfect(God), while Utopianism is the believe that man can make HIMSELF perfect.
