My winter white dwarf hamster is 3 years and 8 weeks at the moment, and she doesnt show any aging problems.. I sometimes have a problem choosing how to treat her, because i can't imagine how she's feeling. Someone please give me tips, I've had alot of old hamsters but they actually showed signs of aging, i kind-of mix soft food with her normal food and she doesn't look like she's struggling. However like i said earlier i can't imagine how she's feeling. Tips please?
Hi Erin, so I went to sleep one night, and i woke up the next morning at 7AM, and I see my hamster with both of her cheeks with red sores on them, about the size of my thumb. They looked swollen and terrible. So I took her to the vet and the vet took some of the stuff out, there was toilet paper, it was used as nesting material for her.. and a treat. I’m just wondering what i should do for her food, tonight I put some pellets in a bowl and mushed them up with hot water, is there anything else I need to do?

Thanks so much for talking about the possibility of NOT taking an aging hamster to the vet. This is something that has weighed heavily on me since my previous hamster passed away, but I didn't want to say anything for fear that I was completely wrong about the idea that sometimes you SHOULDNT take your hamster to the vet. She was an elderly hamster, although I didn't see any signs of aging. She developed a uterus infection and I took her into the vet. They gave her medicine, cleaned her up, gave her shots, did a good job... but the stress of taking her was much too great. Literally the day after I took her, she became lethargic. She would hardly move or eat or drink. I tried to help and make her as comfortable as possible, but she died a week later while I was giving her cuddles, which she always loved. I don't blame the vet or anyone, although I do feel guilty about taking her, knowing how it turned out. Please, everyone, consider carefully whether it is best to take your hamster to the vet!
this happend to my hamster, so much has changed in one week, but I must bring her to the vet tomorrow to remove the stitch as I cannot do it by myself...

Yes me too.. My oldest male is now almost 2 years old.. He is just a bit slower, sleeps more and eats not tooo much but still loves his treats😂❤️but has not physical problems.. But only the teeth are getting white and weaker.. But he is really fit❤️🐹.. He can't live without his wheel and without free running.. He is such a sweet heart

My syrian is almost 4 and just started breathing differently, now makes lots of noises but does not appear to be in any pain. Poor Harvey he has 2 teeth left in the bottom and they are brittel. I feed him oats and such. Still happily cruising in his cage..still easily eating and drinking...still wants to go for his ball run. My heart is breaking to think of him passing as he has been a VIP in my life the last few years. I never knew how much a hamster will actually talk until recently as he is aging

zoey Smith most people keep the cage the same size but keep the food, water, and hideout in the same area and not on different sides of the cage so if the hamster isn't doing to well or doesn't feel like doing much they don't have to go very far with the mobility issues they have
The cage size does not have to be reduced unless they have a very specific issue. Just keep the necessities (food, water, sand, wheel) close to each other, and the rest of the cage can be filled with enrichment.
This has made me feel a little more educated in looking after Henry. He is currently 16 months old and had a UTI at 12 months old so im always on the look out for symptoms of illness and how to care for him when he is old! Love you Erin and have a nice day! :)
I had a Winter Dwarf Hamster that lived for about 3,5 years and I must say that your advice is 100% accurate for what I experienced after he got past the 3 years mark. Well. Except for cleaning more or less - he was still cleaning himself quite well pretty much till the last 2-3 weeks. It might be surprising but the hamster also suffered from some kind of cancer and we took him to the vet - he was about 2,5 at that point. After hearing how old the hamster was the vet himself refused to perform any kind of surgery as he considered the stress would do more harm than good.
Exactly what I need right now. Thanks Erin! My poor baby has a tumor and I can't get it removed. My parents wont even let me get it tested for cancer. I'm supplying him with pain medicine because he is already pretty old so hopefully if he is passing, his days will be painless.
I'm so sorry to hear that I hope your little guy is ok and if not he enjoys his last days painlessly. I don't know what I would do if I was in your situation you are truly brave to be able to cope with that. Sending virtual hugs

Thank you. I'm doing alright and it makes hamster illnesses seem more real to me. I never really imagined any hamster of mine would get a tumor so it's been a good learning experience for me.

My hamster is 2 now and I'm noticing the the effects of ageing. She used to wake up and wait for us in the top part of her cage where we will open the door and she will walk out onto our hands. Now she only does this a few times a week (we don't force her, it's up to her when she wants playtime). I think her current cage set up is becoming difficult for her. She sleeps in the bottom part of her cage and climbs up the vertical tube to the top part where she has her toys, water, food and wheel and where she says hello to us. I will move her food downstairs but I don't know what to do about her water bottle. The top part is a metal bar cage where the bottle is attached but the downstairs is all plastic (like a big plastic pull out draw) so I can't attach the water bottle... my only thought is maybe a bowl of water? But she's never used one before and I don't want her to drown herself? We have a smaller cage which she has her sand baths in but I think moving her to that permanently may stress her... any suggestions? 🙂
My hamsters are 17 months old and have shown absolutely NO SIGNS of age, one of my hamsters did start ignoring me when I woke him up for meals, but I think he's just getting annoyed with me about waking him up. (I don't wake him up anymore.) and my other hamster is pretty much no longer nocturnal and is awake most days.
Hamsters Minecraft And More Also I would remove the wheel when my hamsters start to show getting older, except they will literally CLIMB their water bottle if the wheel is out of the cage for longer than 5 minutes, I have to really go fast when washing the wheels! (My hamsters are Chinese hamsters, by the way.)

After getting my Syrian hamster Bert from Pets At Home being told he was 4-6 months as he was adopted not bought. I first had suspicions this was a few months out after another adoptable female Syrian who was supposedly the same age was about 4” long and clearly very young. Only recently after seeing how thin Berts fur was (after taking him home and giving him a few days of getting in his new cage out of the let store) and him peeing in his nest makes me think he has been in captivity for 1 year+ and moving from home to home for months on end, which would explain why he was so confined to exploring his new cage but is very jumpy and nibbly with peoples hands. I have a question, my hamster is old (about 18 months) and she is developing 2 gray lumps in front of her legs. Do you have an idea what they are? Also I put extra bedding and she just doesn’t use it. If she took all of her bedding out of her house and sleeps there. And it is cold where we are.
I've had my Syrian hamster for four years now, and he suddenly is almost completely immobile, doesn't eat anything, and cries when the white film covers part of his eye. I love him so much. And I don't know how to get him to eat. He drinks sometimes if I hold the bottle for him. I cover him with bedding and shredded toilet paper so he stops shivering. Please, do you have any advice? I hate to see him suffer😭
Hi, I know I'm not Erin but I have some tips for you. You should probably get a slightly smaller cage and feed your hamster soft foods(I think Erin has a vid on that) good luck!😊
My hamster is nearly 2 now and she always sleeps and either breaths very heavily or very softly. She bearly ever gets up this is especially a problem now as she isn't even getting up for food. My hamster is reaching 17 mo now. She has been showing aging symptoms slowly 2 mo ago and recently (1 wk) she shows more severe aging symptoms. We took her to vet for a checkup but there is no clear diagnosis other than dehydration. We took some antibiotics and pain killer from doctor and was asked to feed her for a week. I don’t know if revisiting the vet will improve her situation. The decision of not visiting a vet is hard :( I hope she could suffer less.

@@bluepuddle407 They both unfortunately passed around the same time last year. Both were at least 3! They lived out their last days in big bin cages with lots of bedding and big wheels :). Rip Miley and Britney (named after the pop stars, as they both made comebacks lol).

nearly the same with older people....less agility , bad sight, much more likely to fall , problems to eat hard foods...etc.But in any way hamsters look cuter !

Hello Erin! My 2 year old rabbit Thumper has a load of poops stuck on the top of his tail. Everytime I pick him up I can see the load of poops and I just feel sick! I love playing with my bunny and I want to keep it that way without feeling sick. I've heard of butt baths in warm water. But I'm not so sure if it's safe and I would like to ask the expert! Our old boy is now over 2 years old and has been showing signs of ageing for a while. He now needs his nails clipped regularly as he is less active, his fur is less fluffy & he's getting a bit thin but he's still adorable. My Syrian is over 3yrs old. Smudge has recently decided to only use one level of his 2 floor apartment. I have removed his wheel and he has two choices of bed. Hey uhm this might seem like I don’t care for my hamster but I love him to bits, so basically he is about 1 and a half, I’ve noticed he was pretty chubby and now he’s really skinny and his eyes are smaller, he is not eating as much and this is the worst part, he has this like blue kind of part behind his neck, I’m super scared my mum said just to change his bedding and give him bath she does not think I should bring him to the vet but I realy think he should go I’m scared for him but I’m only 11 I can’t just go by my self I’m just scared pls help me can you contact me or something I’m just so scared for him, and I really don’t want to cry. Here's my worry I have a robot so she could barely reach her water bottle as is (she would have to be up on her hind legs to reach it) I've been watching her and she isn't very mobile anymore I have to take the water bottle out and lower it (it's as low as it can go, it's hanging from side of cage it's just a fairly big cage) sadly I can't be around 24/7 to help her what should I do?

I have two hamsters that are the same age. One is still beru active. He's eating less but still eating. His brother sleeps all day and almost all night. He's not coming out for water or food. I tried to get him to eat some baby food and some finely shredded cheese. He hasn't touched either. He has a lot of trouble walking and falls over a lot and is very shaky. He hasn't been in his ball for several nights because he didn't move. I've done everything I can to make his food and water easy to get to but lately I noticed he wasn't leaving his hut to pee. His stomach and neck and around his face are crusty and nearly bald. I used a damo q-tip to wipe him down but I don't think it helped. Any suggestions or is it time to humanely end his life? I can't tell if he's suffering or if he's experiencing normal old age symptoms

My hamster is almost 2 years old and she acts like she's 2 months! She has a bin cage and always climbs up on top of her water bottle to chew or climb along the bars. She always falls off and I'm scared she will get hurt. I would get her a cage that doesn't have anything high but every other cage she has had she escaped from. Ok I've had my hamster for 1 year and 3/4 months (i don't know how old he was when I got him) 4 weeks ago he started bleeding on his back due scratching I quickly acted and cleaned it and applied antibacterial ointment on his wounds his wounds soon healed but lately he's been acting sluggish and not as active he also isn't eating as much he is also loosing fur in the area where he was bleeding I just need to know is this due to old age or is something wrong

If you guys struggle keeping a hamster warm put a blanket around the cage and if you can’t do that put heating water bottles under the bedding or near where they sleep or burrow

Part of taking control of another life, by having a pet, is dealing with the fact that they will perhaps get sick and that they will definitely die one day. People need to look past the cuteness and think about the animals whole life and if they cant deal with the icky bits, then avoid getting them. Hard to do I know :)

my hamster has to be the only one that doesn’t care about vet visits. we saw a lump on my hamster and needed to know what is was so we took him to the vets. he was eating mealworms and sunflower seed the entire time. he is very chilled a relaxed surprisingly.

Hamster Mad im not completely sure but hamsters are full grown when they are about 8-11 weeks but im not 100% sure

Their cage size can be changed but remember it can't be anything under 360 square inches

zoey Smith most people keep the cage the same size but keep the food, water, and hideout in the same area and not on different sides of the cage so if the hamster isn't doing to well or doesn't feel like doing much they don't have to go very far with the mobility issues they have
The cage size does not have to be reduced unless they have a very specific issue. Just keep the necessities (food, water, sand, wheel) close to each other, and the rest of the cage can be filled with enrichment.
This has made me feel a little more educated in looking after Henry. He is currently 16 months old and had a UTI at 12 months old so im always on the look out for symptoms of illness and how to care for him when he is old!

I had a Winter Dwarf Hamster that lived for about 3,5 years and I must say that your advice is 100% accurate for what I experienced after he got past the 3 years mark.
Well. Except for cleaning more or less - he was still cleaning himself quite well pretty much till the last 2-3 weeks.
It might be surprising but the hamster also suffered from some kind of cancer and we took him to the vet - he was about 2,5 at that point.
After hearing how old the hamster was the vet himself refused to perform any kind of surgery as he considered the stress would do more harm than good.

Exactly what I need right now. Thanks Erin! My poor baby has a tumor and I can't get it removed. My parents wont even let me get it tested for cancer. I'm supplying him with pain medicine because he is already pretty old so hopefully if he is passing, his days will be painless.

Thank you. I'm doing alright and it makes hamster illnesses seem more real to me. I never really imagined any hamster of mine would get a tumor so it's been a good learning experience for me.

My hamster is 2 now and I'm noticing the the effects of ageing. She used to wake up and wait for us in the top part of her cage where we will open the door and she will walk out onto our hands. Now she only does this a few times a week (we don't force her, it's up to her when she wants playtime). I think her current cage set up is becoming difficult for her. She sleeps in the bottom part of her cage and climbs up the vertical tube to the top part where she has her toys, water, food and wheel and where she says hello to us. I will move her food downstairs but I don't know what to do about her water bottle. The top part is a metal bar cage where the bottle is attached but the downstairs is all plastic (like a big plastic pull out draw) so I can't attach the water bottle... my only thought is maybe a bowl of water? But she's never used one before and I don't want her to drown herself? We have a smaller cage which she has her sand baths in but I think moving her to that permanently may stress her... any suggestions? 🙂
My hamsters are 17 months old and have shown absolutely NO SIGNS of age, one of my hamsters did start ignoring me when I woke him up for meals, but I think he's just getting annoyed with me about waking him up. (I don't wake him up anymore.) and my other hamster is pretty much no longer nocturnal and is awake most days.
Hamsters Minecraft And More Also I would remove the wheel when my hamsters start to show getting older, except they will literally CLIMB their water bottle if the wheel is out of the cage for longer than 5 minutes, I have to really go fast when washing the wheels!
(My hamsters are Chinese hamsters, by the way.)

After getting my Syrian hamster Bert from Pets At Home being told he was 4-6 months as he was adopted not bought. I first had suspicions this was a few months out after another adoptable female Syrian who was supposedly the same age was about 4” long and clearly very young. Only recently after seeing how thin Berts fur was (after taking him home and giving him a few days of getting in his new cage out of the let store) and him peeing in his nest makes me think he has been in captivity for 1 year+ and moving from home to home for months on end, which would explain why he was so confined to exploring his new cage but is very jumpy and nibbly with peoples hands.

I have a question, my hamster is old (about 18 months) and she is developing 2 gray lumps in front of her legs. Do you have an idea what they are?
Also I put extra bedding and she just doesn’t use it. If she took all of her bedding out of her house and sleeps there. And it is cold where we are.

I've had my Syrian hamster for four years now, and he suddenly is almost completely immobile, doesn't eat anything, and cries when the white film covers part of his eye. I love him so much. And I don't know how to get him to eat. He drinks sometimes if I hold the bottle for him. I cover him with bedding and shredded toilet paper so he stops shivering. Please, do you have any advice? I hate to see him suffer😭
Hi, I know I'm not Erin but I have some tips for you. You should probably get a slightly smaller cage and feed your hamster soft foods(I think Erin has a vid on that) good luck!😊
My hamster is nearly 2 now and she always sleeps and either breaths very heavily or very softly. She bearly ever gets up this is especially a problem now as she isn't even getting up for food. We try to hand feed he but she just doesn't take it and she is so so skinny, is there any suggestions on what to do? :(

My hamster is reaching 17 mo now. She has been showing aging symptoms slowly 2 mo ago and recently (1 wk) she shows more severe aging symptoms. We took her to vet for a checkup but there is no clear diagnosis other than dehydration. We took some antibiotics and pain killer from doctor and was asked to feed her for a week.
I don’t know if revisiting the vet will improve her situation. The decision of not visiting a vet is hard :( I hope she could suffer less.

Hello Erin! My 2 year old rabbit Thumper has a load of poops stuck on the top of his tail. Everytime I pick him up I can see the load of poops and I just feel sick! I love playing with my bunny and I want to keep it that way without feeling sick. I've heard of butt baths in warm water. But I'm not so sure if it's safe and I would like to ask the expert! I've never bathed him before and I'm quite nervous.

Our old boy is now over 2 years old and has been showing signs of ageing for a while. He now needs his nails clipped regularly as he is less active, his fur is less fluffy & he's getting a bit thin but he's still adorable. There's something I wanted to ask about, I'm a bit worried about his teeth & don't know how to get him to open his mouth to check. Any advice would be great. Thanks

My Syrian is over 3yrs old. Smudge has recently decided to only use one level of his 2 floor apartment. I have removed his wheel and he has two choices of bed. He looks old now and sleeps a lot but still enjoys remaking his den when I rudely clean it out and steal all his stash! Dreading his passing. Thanks for your very helpful videos.

Hey uhm this might seem like I don’t care for my hamster but I love him to bits, so basically he is about 1 and a half, I’ve noticed he was pretty chubby and now he’s really skinny and his eyes are smaller, he is not eating as much and this is the worst part, he has this like blue kind of part behind his neck, I’m super scared my mum said just to change his bedding and give him bath she does not think I should bring him to the vet but I realy think he should go I’m scared for him but I’m only 11 I can’t just go by my self I’m just scared pls help me can you contact me or something I’m just so scared for him, and I really don’t want to cry. Here's my worry I have a robot so she could barely reach her water bottle as is (she would have to be up on her hind legs to reach it) I've been watching her and she isn't very mobile anymore I have to take the water bottle out and lower it (it's as low as it can go, it's hanging from side of cage it's just a fairly big cage) sadly I can't be around 24/7 to help her what should I do?

My hamster is litterally days away from breaking the world record of oldest hampster im not joking I've had him for 4 years and 4 months and the oldest lived for 4 years and 5 months you do the math
I have two hamsters that are the same age. One is still beru active. He's eating less but still eating. His brother sleeps all day and almost all night. He's not coming out for water or food. I tried to get him to eat some baby food and some finely shredded cheese. He hasn't touched either. He has a lot of trouble walking and falls over a lot and is very shaky. He hasn't been in his ball for several nights because he didn't move. I've done everything I can to make his food and water easy to get to but lately I noticed he wasn't leaving his hut to pee. His stomach and neck and around his face are crusty and nearly bald. I used a damo q-tip to wipe him down but I don't think it helped. Any suggestions or is it time to humanely end his life? I can't tell if he's suffering or if he's experiencing normal old age symptoms

My hamster is almost 2 years old and she acts like she's 2 months! She has a bin cage and always climbs up on top of her water bottle to chew or climb along the bars. She always falls off and I'm scared she will get hurt. I would get her a cage that doesn't have anything high but every other cage she has had she escaped from. Ok I've had my hamster for 1 year and 3/4 months (i don't know how old he was when I got him) 4 weeks ago he started bleeding on his back due scratching I quickly acted and cleaned it and applied antibacterial ointment on his wounds his wounds soon healed but lately he's been acting sluggish and not as active he also isn't eating as much he is also loosing fur in the area where he was bleeding I just need to know is this due to old age or is something wrong

Hi Erin I have just been given a 2 year old hamster the vet thinks he has had an brain anurism. His owner has moved into uni accommodation and can't take the hamster. He is in a small store shop cage but I would like to put him into a larger accommodation but is it too late at his age and health problems? Please help. Thanks
If you guys struggle keeping a hamster warm put a blanket around the cage and if you can’t do that put heating water bottles under the bedding or near where they sleep or burrow

Part of taking control of another life, by having a pet, is dealing with the fact that they will perhaps get sick and that they will definitely die one day. People need to look past the cuteness and think about the animals whole life and if they cant deal with the icky bits, then avoid getting them. Hard to do I know :)

my hamster has to be the only one that doesn’t care about vet visits. we saw a lump on my hamster and needed to know what is was so we took him to the vets. he was eating mealworms and sunflower seed the entire time. he is very chilled a relaxed surprisingly.
