Switzerland Invades (Accidentally) | Tales From the Bottle

  • Switzerland is famously neutral - they don't get involved in conflict, and they would never invade another country, right? Wrong (sort of).
"Switzerland has a relatively active military due to ongoing conscription. Several incidents have occurred during routine training:
On 14 October 1968, five Swiss artillery shells accidentally hit Liechtenstein's only skiing resort, Malbun. The only recorded damages were a few chairs belonging to an outdoor restaurant.
On 26 August 1976, just before midnight, 75 members of the Swiss militia and a number of packhorses mistakenly took a wrong turn and ended up 500 meters into Liechtenstein at Iradug, in Balzers. The Liechtensteiners reportedly offered drinks to the Swiss soldiers.
On 5 December 1985, rockets fired by the Swiss Army landed in Liechtenstein, causing a forest fire in a protected area. Compensation was paid.
On 13 October 1992, following written orders, Swiss Army recruits unknowingly crossed the border and went to Triesenberg to set up an observation post. Swiss commanders had overlooked the fact that Triesenberg was not on Swiss territory. Switzerland apologized to Liechtenstein for the incident.
In March 2007, a company of 171 Swiss soldiers mistakenly entered Liechtenstein, as they were disorientated and took a wrong turn due to bad weather conditions. The troops returned to Swiss territory after they had travelled more than 2 km into the country. The Liechtenstein authorities did not discover the incursion and were informed by the Swiss after the incident. The incident was disregarded by both sides. A Liechtenstein spokesman said, "It's not like they invaded with attack helicopters. No problem, these things happen"."

Fun story: When iserved in the swiss army we were in a maneuvre with our platoon. We were tasked to quickly mount our Piranha 8x8 LAV's and deploy further north. We drove through the french speaking part of switzerland, along the french border, when our LAV's commander ordered a wrong turn in a roundabout. After this roundabout there was no other option as to drive up to the french border custom. Since we were 9 people in foreign uniform, this counted as an attempted invasion of france, and the french army showed up to investigate. We had a good laugh with them after explaining that our seargeant was just bad at reading maps.

I served in Vallais and some years later in Ticino and had 1-2 soldiers crossing Italy every weekend (if I remember right, they were however not allowed to cross Italy with their rifles, just Tenu A).
Always wondered what the reactions of the Italians were if they saw the Swiss soldiers in uniform in their trains, but the soldiers did nothing wrong. Greetings.

There is a train that goes from Zürich, Switzerland to Paris and stops in Basel, Switzerland. A lot of swiss soldiers can go home for the weekends and often do so by train as it's free for them. There have been multiple occasions where a swiss soldier took that train to get to Basel on the way home and fell asleep, just to be rudely awakened by armed Frenchmen somewhere in France. So technically, Switzerland also accidentally invaded France with a one-man army. As there are a lot more train routes that leave Switzerland, and there are lots of tired soldiers traveling by train, we probably "invaded" every neighboring country at some point...

To be fair. There is a road straight to liechtenstein. And the training ground is DIRECTLY next to the boarder / said road. So if you wanto to "flank" the enemy in training and wander off just a few hundred meters too far, you're already in liechtenstein.
Funny enough they told us about 20 times to NOT DO THAT (again) haha

Everybody who ever joined the swiss army (which is around 80% of the male population) get to keep their service rifle at home and MUST (by law) visit the shooting range at least once a year to keep up their shooting skills. During especialy dangerous times, we even get issued some ammo to take home in case we get overrun by the enemy (obviously not a danger rn and this hasn't happened since i was born, but it has happened before).
I actually have a SIG STGW 90 at home. Beautiful weapon, highly accurate and very easy to clean. The only downside is you have to clean it after every 60 - 100 rounds fired.

But as for Planes being shot down by the Swiss Airforce - It seems they only ever shot down german Planes - the rest was forced to leave or land, which allied troops sometimes welcomed because their planes were damaged, and being captured in Germany or Italy would have been worse than being arrested by the swiss. Also they did not only fly Messerschmitt, but also Morane-Saulniers from France. And it is kind of obvious, that they did not fly something like Supermarines or North Americans - because they simply could not get them.

I was in the Swiss military and we were actually jokingly told that if we ever walk into Lichtenstein in uniform, we will have already successfully invaded it lol.
On the other hand, another thing being told was that if there ever was a a war between us and Lichtenstein, they would have to pull up with their (arguably) strong fireforce to fight :D

I think using any stanza of our national anthem along with WW2 pictures is very misplaced. The song originates from the Vormärz before the revolution of 1848 and is thus way older than the Nazis. Hitler misused the first stanza and you should not be doing the same in your video. After all, you'd also not show pictures of Confederates in the American Civil War and overlay it with the Star Spangled Banner.

As to what Lichtenstein literally means: Licht = light ;(etwas) lichten = (to) lighten (something); Stein = stone
So Lichtenstein would either mean lightstone or lightendstone depending on the intentionality of the "en".

I was in the Swiss army and believe me, there were many more incidents than that. There's a narrow road that leads out of a military training area right into Liechtenstein and the last opportunity to turn around isn't obvious. The next opportunity is in Liechtenstein itself and troops often miss the last road. Probably happens every year.

The definition of double-landlocked is not the surrounding areas around you are land locked it's that you have absolutely no access to the ocean via river, for example Switzerland has a merchant ship fleet of tens of vessels and has ocean access because of a river that goes through it so while it is geographically landlocked it can still reach the ocean whilst Lichtenstein cannot because there are no ocean-going rivers that go through it.

@DerOldHerr nope, between the bodensee and the shipable part of the rhein are some waterfalls ("Rheinfälle") wich you dont want to ride a boat on.
