We Realised Our Baby Was Born Blind

- When baby Elliot was 4 months old, he was diagnosed with Leber's congenital amaurosis (LCA), an incurable condition that causes severe vision loss and blindness. It came as a shock to his parents, Wei Shi and Eric, who had big dreams for their first born.
There was little information on raising a blind baby because the condition is so rare. They had to come up with their own ways to teach Elliot to crawl forward and chew - things that would have come naturally for sighted children who largely learn from visual cues.
They also sought help from organisations such as Guide Dogs Singapore through which they met people like orientation mobility specialist Cheryl Yeo. She gave Elliot his first cane, which he now uses for exploring.
A year since Elliot's diagnosis, seeing how well he's been doing, Wei Shi and Eric worry a little less. Their biggest hope is for Elliot to be independent and achieve his dreams like any other sighted person, in spite of his disability.

He’s standing in the light of parents who love him. I don’t see darkness for him.
After watching this, I felt emotionally touched by the young and optimistic parent. I could really empathy their story as it brings me back my memories, 27 years ago, because I also have a son who was diagnosed with Leber’s congenital amaurosis. Today, my son works as a software engineer, after facing many obstacles - he struggles in the society especially in education, but his effort and determination of hard work bring him to where he is today. I am so proud of him! Just believe in youself and there is light at the end of the tunnel!
Information Technology has really help my son alot
Wow!27 years ago wd hv been even harder,👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻thank u for sharing your story.
Please help to share your experience with this pair of young parents 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Thank you for sharing with us nothing is impossible
❤🌼
I hope Elliot’s parents read this comment. I understand how hard it can be to raise a visually impaired child. It must also be realy heartbreaking to learn about his condition at first. Want to encourage you that blind people can have equally, if not, more fulfilling lives than others. I went to a music college and one of my professors who is blind is able to teach classes, do research, is married and has a beautiful family and daughter. A blind friend of mine is a lovely person and is getting married. The journey is going to be hard, but Elliot’s potential and future is so bright! Keep doing what you’re doing! Jia you!
My child is also blind but he is paralyzed and cannot stand he is 5years old now😢
@@swarankaur125you strong enough to handle this situation
I hope that future technology will allow him to gain vision again. Sending lots of love to parents ~
It would be scary for him to have vision because he doesn't know what it is like to have one. You can't miss something you never knew.
@@heisyahweh7148 yea but u can adapt n change. It’s like u saying if I was poor I won’t want to be rich becos I won’t miss something I nvr had...I mean I may be wrong but that’s how ur msg came across as, to me
@@heisyahweh7148 tons of kids who've never heard before receive hearing aids and cry at what they hear and live normal lives. scary. sure. but it would be more cruel to deprive him of that opportunity to see.
@@heisyahweh7148 I agree with everyone else here. If technology can bring some sort of sight back to this little angel, the opportunity should be given to him. In fact I saw something recently where they implanted something near the retina and people could start seeing in very low resolution grey scale vision? Not perfect, but definitely a start. There's still hope that technology can help us all lead better and more complete lives.
May GOD provides his vision and show him light. Stay positively God loves children and I believe Jesus surely heal your child.
Hope CNA will cover more families and individuals with special needs, make a difference in other’s lives etc
Your comment touched my heart.
A very touched moment, when the baby acknowledged his parents was cheering for him, and he was happy he could navigate to ground successfully..... Praying for the cute baby and his family.... God bless :)
You guys are amazing parents. Think that he is a child with a different ability. Your love and strength will develop him.
Be brave and accept him às he issues
God bless him
I know you guys are struggling but as a deaf person i assure you he will do well like all people. I am 23 and will graduate in medical microbiology this July. Blindness, deafness or any other ability are not disabilities these are special abilities.
Thanks that you have tell us .
This little guy has amazing parents. Dancing seems to be an instinctive response to music.
The crazy part is that as he grows up, being blind will be normal to him that he wouldn't be able to imagine his life with vision. Blindness is all he has known since birth and that's normal to him. This is to say that everyone's "normal" is different and we should respect that! Wishing him and his lovely parents all the best!
Yes, the child is born blind and he does not have any concept of colour, light, shapes and forms. He does not know what he is missing out. So, what are the parents grieving on? They are grieving on their own loss. Expectation not met and hence, grief and sorrow set in.
When he reaches a certain age, he would talk to his classmates and he would somewhat imagine what being a sighted person would be like.
@@retrovox actually blind people arnt really that interested in forms and objects. Because they can somewhat understand how that works. But most blind people are really amazed at depth and distance. They find it odd that the average person can see objects 100 meters away. And they know how far and how close it is. Thats something they find impossible to understand
This isn't normal.
I'm sick and tired of everyone justifying the brutality and violence of Nature as "Normal"
He is blessed to have these two for parents. They're doing a wonderful job!!!! He will grow up to do AMAZING things! 👏
I have an family friend who is visually impaired lives independently, he is in his 60's. He goes skiing with a guide and a beeper for him to guide him. With your love and dedication to him, and the technology like braille key boards for computers. He can do anything , but just in a different way.
He’s a beautiful boy! What an 👼 angel. Mom and dad are doing a great job!
This kind of Documentary make you feel grateful of what you have and a reason to try to make the world a better place.
Don’t worry too much, everything will turn out fine. Take things one day at a time. As a parent with a special needs child myself, I have also asked myself a million times what will happen to my child when I’m not around for him anymore. I have learned to trust in God and do whatever we can for him now. You have an amazing child who will bring you on an amazing journey as parents. God blessed.
❤❤
His father said the best thing: your expectations shouldn't be reduced! He'll just reach his targets in a different way! Don't let something that others may view as an impairment keep you from reaching high!
This is the first time I cried. It’s so painful to see a blind baby. Elliot’s parents are spiritually strong and caring. I wish this baby be happy and always healthy in his life.
have been following your story since the reddit post, really inspiring couple and elliot will grow up just fine with such great parents!!

I am a single father of 2. I can see that it’s not easy for the 2 of you, especially your kid. Please don’t give up. God will bless you all.
With both of ur supports, the boy will grow up stronger. From the vdo, he is vey young, but very understandable.Perhaps, visual impaired teach him to greatly adapt to it and become even more independent.
amazing parents! I'm sure Elliot will grow up and achieve great things. keep up the good work!
That kid has amazing parent! Definitely gonna succeed in life!
I have a special needs girl too. Can fully understand where u come from, we have to be stronger than any other parents in order to bring joy to our kids. We have these fear that if one day we pass on and how they can survive independently. Whatever going to be just try our best in raising them in a healthy and happy environment. All the best to you guys and your cute baby boy
All respect to parents who love their kids (leading them to live according to their abilities)
He may not be able to see in the traditional way but his blindness allows him to see the world in a far more unique way

Lots of love to you, Elliot, Weishi and Eric! Keep the faith and stay strong!❤️😍
Thank you for being such amazing parents.
For a period I was helping a blind adult and learnt that he is very independent in moving around in sg. He was also blind since young. I believe your son has no problem to achieve that and even more since both of you could try to map out the possible routes he could take. Very encouraged by both of you. Will pray for your family. God bless.
Thank u for being strong Elliot's mummy and daddy... pls dont stop persevering... u guys r in my prayers....
I wish nothing but the best for this family.
This boy is going to be very successful in future, trust me.. no worries. God bless and stay strong.

I’m glad that CNA and the parents are willing to be part of this video… so that other parents who are in the same boat won’t feel like they are alone when dealing with similar issues.

Such admirable parents to raise their child
加油 both parents!! He will grow up to be a great man!
❤️❤️❤️ You guys have come so far~ I still remember the dilemma you had whether to put E in the public light to raise awareness for VI babies. Ultimately to aim for a society and environment that is assistive, receptive and inclusive. So proud of you both 😢, stick to your innate intuitive love yall have for E, it is what that will take him to places... Even highly exceeding your expectations~ 🤗🤗🤗
Amazing noble parents any child would be so blessed to have❤️❤️

I am so touched to the core while viewing this video. My husband and I are involve in Ephpheta Foundation for the Blind, Inc. Our mission right now is the free cataract operation in cooperation with our donors and loyal benefactors. Praise God the foundation was able to survive for more than 40 yrs. It was nevet easy but with God's grace we are able to continue with our mission. Father Jess Fernandez, SJ our founder is turning 90 years old on June 28, 2021. God bless to both of you for this video.
He will be independent just like millions of visually impaired people in the world.
Very inspiring couple and parents. I could never do this. Elliot is lucky to meet you all. Sending some love to this beautiful family ❤️❤️

Elliot is such a beautiful child. So adorable. God bless this family and Elliot!
Elliot has such wonderful parents!
This world renowned pianist, Nobuyuki Tsujii, 32, has the same condition as baby Elliot. I’m a big fan of his, and going to his concert is such a wonderful and encouraging experience. He is living by himself now and go around the world to perform. His mother discovered his talent to memories notes at a very young age.
All the best to Elliott. Very inspired and touched by your love, patience and strength
Amazing parents . Wishing for a miracle so Elliot can see his parents !

You guys are amazing parents. Elliot is so blessed to call you mom & dad. He is so adorable and looks happy and at ease because of you. You guys give me so much inspiration. I have my little one and I also feel an endless love for her like I can do everything for her no matter how tired I am. But your love is another level and I aspire to be a loving, patient, optimistic parent like you. May God bless your lives immensely.
