We Realised Our Baby Was Born Blind

  • When baby Elliot was 4 months old, he was diagnosed with Leber's congenital amaurosis (LCA), an incurable condition that causes severe vision loss and blindness. It came as a shock to his parents, Wei Shi and Eric, who had big dreams for their first born.
    There was little information on raising a blind baby because the condition is so rare. They had to come up with their own ways to teach Elliot to crawl forward and chew - things that would have come naturally for sighted children who largely learn from visual cues.
    They also sought help from organisations such as Guide Dogs Singapore through which they met people like orientation mobility specialist Cheryl Yeo. She gave Elliot his first cane, which he now uses for exploring.
    A year since Elliot's diagnosis, seeing how well he's been doing, Wei Shi and Eric worry a little less. Their biggest hope is for Elliot to be independent and achieve his dreams like any other sighted person, in spite of his disability.
    (This video was filmed before Phase 2 Heightened Alert.)

    After watching this, I felt emotionally touched by the young and optimistic parent. I could really empathy their story as it brings me back my memories, 27 years ago, because I also have a son who was diagnosed with Leber’s congenital amaurosis. Today, my son works as a software engineer, after facing many obstacles - he struggles in the society especially in education, but his effort and determination of hard work bring him to where he is today. I am so proud of him! Just believe in youself and there is light at the end of the tunnel!

    I hope Elliot’s parents read this comment. I understand how hard it can be to raise a visually impaired child. It must also be realy heartbreaking to learn about his condition at first. Want to encourage you that blind people can have equally, if not, more fulfilling lives than others. I went to a music college and one of my professors who is blind is able to teach classes, do research, is married and has a beautiful family and daughter. A blind friend of mine is a lovely person and is getting married. The journey is going to be hard, but Elliot’s potential and future is so bright! Keep doing what you’re doing! Jia you!

      @@heisyahweh7148 I agree with everyone else here. If technology can bring some sort of sight back to this little angel, the opportunity should be given to him. The crazy part is that as he grows up, being blind will be normal to him that he wouldn't be able to imagine his life with vision. Blindness is all he has known since birth and that's normal to him. This is to say that everyone's "normal" is different and we should respect that! Wishing him and his lovely parents all the best!

    • @retrovox
      @retrovox 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Yes, the child is born blind and he does not have any concept of colour, light, shapes and forms. He does not know what he is missing out. So, what are the parents grieving on? They are grieving on their own loss. Expectation not met and hence, grief and sorrow set in.

    • @abcd-hw8io

      When he reaches a certain age, he would talk to his classmates and he would somewhat imagine what being a sighted person would be like.

      @kc_h7h 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@retrovox actually blind people arnt really that interested in forms and objects. Because they can somewhat understand how that works. But most blind people are really amazed at depth and distance. They find it odd that the average person can see objects 100 meters away. And they know how far and how close it is. Thats something they find impossible to understand

    I teared up so many times. These parents are literal ANGELS on earth, Elliot's going to be alright! I look forward to seeing his future and the many things that he will be able to achieve.

    ''Blind baby''. Sad words. You can see the heartbreak on his dad's face. Eliot is lovely.

    Dear Koh family,
    You are doing a wonderful job with Elliott. Please do not give up on him. Elliot needs both his parents to nurture and guide him. If all else fails in Singapore, here is Switzerland visually impaired youngsters get around by public transportation easily and they lead very independent lives. Either way, Elliot is a lucky and bright boy!
    Love from Switzerland

    Heartened to see most, if not all heartful and empathetic comments in the comments section. Definitely reminds us to be grateful and stay humble for what we have. May Wei Shi and Eric have the strength and faith in discovering Elliot's way of life.
