My name is Matt Estlea, I'm a 22 year old Woodworker from Basingstoke in England and my aim is to make your woodworking less s***.
I come from 5 years tuition at Rycotewood Furniture Centre and 4 years experience working at Axminster Tools and Machinery where I still currently work on weekends. Have you tried using a spray bottle instead of a brush to do the color transformation on gilding? I'd like to see a video where you try that to avoid the leaf tearing.
Ammonium sulphate will get you some nice greens and blues on the copper. It doesn’t smell either and it’s cheap. About 10 quid for a kg
I use a piece of wax paper , place it over the leaf, as it clings statically , then press down and it clings onto leaf, pick it up and lay it on the surface, rub gently with a cloth, lift the wax paper. And then repeat till done. Burnish with a soft cloth over the wax paper so it doesn’t tear!!
Would you recommend putting a lacquer or epoxy on after all of this to make sure it doesn't flake off?

A strong colour under the leaf would leave an interesting effect where the leaf does come off 🤔
Heads up.. if you ever need to sniff something that is offense, a Laboratory trick is to hold your breath first then take a sniff and you will not get the whole offensive smell only a bit. ;-) Love the video,thanks for sharing.
You need to burnish the gilding for it to get maximum adhesion. I reckon that’s your problem.

Is your liquid still warm? I would say that seize (Mixtion in German) is heat sensitiv. Maybe you also need to burnish the metal it a bit more when applying for proper contact. It is also said the 12h is better than the 3h. Maybe fingerprints on the seize? Maybe this is why guilding is an proper trade and not an hobby, too many maybe´s.:-) I find your videos extremely well done. You really explain what and how i would explain myself. Thanks!
Interesting stuff! I'm about to attempt some gold leaf on wood. Crazy stuff...it's like gold vapour. I read it's typically 500 atoms thick!
Just on this, maybe a good way of not risking the leaf ripping as you add the sulfur solution would be to to just place a paper towel over the leaf and then spray that with the solution. That way, you'd be able to get a fairly rigorous application of it, without leaving spray marks or having the brush pull up the material. Then you can just lift the paper towel up at the end and dab it dry with a clean one!
Love how he says "the shop will be uninhabitable," and immediately goes to sniff the jar of geyser perfume!
If you want to reverse the reaction then you could try putting some vinegar with salt mixed in on it. Mixing vinegar and salt actually produces (very dilute) hydrochloric acid, which is good at dissolving patinas from metals. You'll have to get it off quickly, though, or it might dissolve the whole leaf away. If you want to give it a try just mix some vinegar and salt in a bowl and throw in a penny, it should brighten up before your eyes.
Great video :) What do you do for sealing the finish after your don? It seems quite britlee and I assume there must be an extra coat of protection.

Already done, 1950’s les Paul Goldtop, used real copper flakes in the lacquer, after 60 years they look amazing.

Do you know what the open time is on the oil size? 3 hour size is 3 hours to go tacky and 3 hours to dry but how long of that 3 hours can you use to apply leaf? Secondly I'd be interested to find out how much of the colouration remains once you apply a finish. My experience is that the colours all but disaappear with a wax finish
Could you try airbrushing the “liver” mixture onto the leaf?

It didn’t work on the gold or silver leaf. It just sat in the top as if there was a coating in it. Any ideas 🤔 where you do buy your gold leaf from
You can’t patina real gold leaf
I’ve used gold leaf on frames and this technique would be great for them.
Gold is inert...don't think it's amenable to this kinda thing.
Try spraying the smelly stuff, and wait for the reaction. Someone else sprinkles salt on it when it's wet. Also, vinegar can be sprayed on, then sprinkle on salt. Someone else sprays pure alcohol and lights it on fire.
Can this be coated with poly?

Do you have to have wood underneath? Can I just do this to the copper/zinc leaf on its transfer sheet then transfer onto paper? Or need to do it after I've attached it to paper?

Experimenting with every type of paint varnish and other unusual wood finishes is my absolute favorite way of wasting money :D ! but sometimes it's just amazing and in the end it's all worth it !
Eighth!! Cause that's a thing. Very cool video. Leafing is super fragile, When I've seen other people use it they generally lift it from the paper with a knife or other tool, it might just be your fingers (oils and what not) that cause it to tear.

Cool video, thanks for sharing. I think the limitation is surface, it might be better on large surfaces than smaller ones. Might go well on the base case you still need to built.

Even with the damage to the leaf - they still look amazing. Do these chemicals work on more substantial metal as well as metal leaf; do you know?
I'm guessing that you would indeed get similar effects on thicker metals. These are (if i'm right) all surface reactions. You might also want to check out some of Ben Crowe's experiments with copper patination over on the Crimson Guitars channel.
Obviously the point of the leafs used here is that it will conform easily (too easily?) to the surface of the wood, if that is what you want to do. Thicker metal sheets will probably require hammering to make it conform to the shape of the wood. I'm sure there is a proper term for that!
I think you should do a low angle jack plane video. How to set it up for different actions and how to use it for those actions.
