And for the 40c's on a gravel bike... I actually ride 35c tires on my commuter-gravel bike that work perfectly fine on road and in the forest. If you just avoid the deeper puddles and the bigger sticks you'll be good to go.

First of all: Great video - as always. And thank you for this new series, especially for the "... but we're not talking about that"-part. And for everyone who's interested: The UCI regulation on maximum tire width is 33mm. Had to learn that the hard way when I showed up to a race with 35mm tires and wasn't allowed to start.
My low end gravel bike is due to arrive tomorrow, it's to go with my MTB and my road bike so I have more variety. especially in mixed weather at the moment. If I ever got to some of the trail you showed I'd be running instead. Thanks for the series of gravel bike videos.
Great video. I use Time ATAC pedals on all of my bikes. Well, it's one set of pedals that I rotate between my 2004 Bianchi Axis modified as a road bike, my 2003 Rocky Mountain Vertex, and my 1994 Cannondale Track bike (when I have opportunity to ride it). The pedals are yellow, and are considered 'vintage' which makes me feel old. Anyhow, I use those pedals because of the float they provide. My old feet/legs need that. No matter who you are and what equipment you have, keep it in good shape and keep riding to keep you in good shape.
Fairly brave attempting to pin down what is a quite woolly term, ie Gravel bike can be anything from a road bike that can take a bit of dirt, to a full suspension Monster cross beastie. I personally love mine for ability to do anything (within reason) sure my big trail bike can absolutely flatter and flatten trails that on the Gravel I’m picking my way down, but it can do it!
Excellent intro to gravel riding Coach Juliet! Looking forward to the rest of the series. Are you going to cover getting tire pressure dialed in for different conditions? For example, I have to cover a fair bit of paved sections to get to the good gravel sections and seem to vary between too low to roll fast on pavement and too high to roll over gravel ruts easily.

Honestly, many of the trails where you use a gravel bike would seem to be more appropriate for a mountain bike. Some of those trails have rocks and stones which are anything but gravel. Kudos do your maneuvering over those quite technical trails using a gravel bike.
Gravel bikes don't literally mean bikes made for gravel, they're multi terrain bikes. Part of the fun is that you push them to their limits and beyond by taking them in really rough stuff, like how CX riders take sub 35c tyres on mud. Not optimal, but a lot of fun! You take the same rocky bridleway - on a mtb it's easy. Tonnes of grip, tonnes of suspension. Great fun for some, but too easy for others. On a gravel bike, the same track has way more challenge, you have to be much more considerate of line choice, you might slip and skid, you have moments of thinking 'should I try this...? Is this too much? Fuck it, only one way to find out!' After all, Juliet has plenty of top of the range mtbs. But she chooses gravel bikes a lot of the time because it's fun!

1x is, for me anyway, the way to go....I've got five 1x bikes.....and I've converted two drop bar bikes from 2x and even an old MTB from 3x (the other two being 1x as standard)....Lot less hassle when cleaning whichever bike I'm on, which is always a bonus in my view, with lots of mud this time of year. Being off-road virtually all the time on CX, gravel and mountain bikes. it's a no brainer.....Tubeless is another no brainer....and flared bars.....more stable on rough "MTB" sections As for spd pedals.....They're essential for off-road riding (or flatties, whatever your poison), and I even use spd's on my old road bike when it occasionally comes out after the dust is removed (comfort and familiarity perhaps ?)....Like Juliet mentioned, you can walk in them easily and don't look like Chris Froome running up that mountain the other year when his bike was fucked !!!.....Even in the flatlands of eastern England, there's still bits you have to walk.....usually very muddy bits that a fatbike wouldn't even cope with.....Double sided is no brainer nonsense if you ask me. The fatter tyres the better as well in my view for comfort if nowt else...Gravel biking is (in my rose tinted early '90's narrow bar MTB glasses kind of view) early 90's mountain biking on a rigid bike, but with drop bars and without an unwieldy 3x groupset along with better brakes and shifting.....I love it....
Morning! Good video and cheerful attitude as always. I'm curious as to your thoughts on the trade-offs of the Redshift stem versus the Lauf Fork. My thoughts on the stem is while it does smooth out the ride a bit. Some of the roads I ride you have to hang on pretty hard. One thing I don't like with the stem is the fact it feels different depending on where you place your hands. It's softer when you're on the hoods versus on the tops or in the drops. I've been thinking of taking the few grams hit and going with a Lauf fork as it not only smooths out the handlebars but everything on the front of the bike--less rattling of your stuff in the top and frame bags. Also, how was the post? As always, loved the video.
Pedal question. Coming off a road bike with XTR pedals and onto a flat bar gravel bike. Experienced rider, but newbie to gravel. Do you suggest I stay with the XTR clipless pedals or change to a flat pedal? I watched your video on technique, and you mentioned allowing the bike to move under you and one's need to change position on the bike. Will clipless pedals restrict me in this as I learn this new skill set?
Juliet, question for you. Asked Dave also so you might have heard it already. Looking into gravel bikes for myself and my better half. She is only 5ft1" on a good day. So the road bike is a 3XS from Canyon with 650b wheels. So struggling to find a gravel bike small enough. Would a rigid MTB be a halfway house? If we go that route I will do the same otherwise the comment will be....your bike is lighter.
What about flat pedals? Some in the touring and mountain bike community are keen on them. For people who want to be able do technical trails that require more walking or carrying your bike it might be a good idea. Also new riders may not feel confident in unclipping from the pedals.
I use flats with my gravel bike. I did start off with spd pedals when I got a gravel bike but I found with the gravel bike, because you can't just roll over the rough stuff like you can with a mountain bike, it was pretty nerve racking when you couldn't rely on putting your foot out to save yourself, especially on rough tracks that can really throw you about. I ride on quite rough tracks that can have barbed wire fences, jaggy bushes or unfenced steep drops off the sides and when your foot is locked onto the pedal it's a bit hair-raising. I switched to flats with mtb shoes and it's much more pleasant. Probably not as efficient, but on the tracks I ride with my condition I doubt it'll make any difference.

Great for a novice like myself. I cycle a lot of cycle paths, dirt tracks and around the side of fields, but also some road too. Probably a 50/50 split on my regular rides. I have a Giant Revolt 1 which has a x2 gear set. Would it be worth changing to a x1 at the front. I do want to do more off road going forward. ANYWAY I am really interested in gravel bikes/vid series as I come from the high plains of Kansas (west of the Flint hills where the Unbound Gravel is held) called the Smoky Hills which are much more challenging imho. I'm torn between getting a gravel bike and a hard tail XC bike for longer rides where I'll go off road but not full sus territory. I guess the only thing that makes me think of getting a gravel bike is you get more bang for your buck as you're not paying for a fork on the XC bike.
I use flats on my gravel bikes, you can definitely do decent mileage. Only problem I found is when it gets muddy like it is now, the studs can get overwhelmed with mud and then your foot can slip off.

I have a question. Does the inner dimension of the wheel have any impact as to how wide a tire you can use? The reason I ask is because I had 23 mil tires that came with my bike, and moved up to 38 mil tires. There was hardly any difference in overall width. I think it’s because my wheel is narrow and it’s squeezing the wider tire into the same tight space as the narrower tire.

Love your videos, amazing personality! but speaking as a MTB'er, gravel bikers are just MTB'ers in denial. :-). A good xc hardtail will give you everything a gravel bike will + the ability to drop the seat and ride technical stuff.

A gravel bike can make stuff that would be pretty boring on a suspension bike much more challenging and interesting. I've got a 29er, a gravel bike and a hardcore 650b hardtail. I like them all for different reasons. If it makes you smile who cares, just ride it 👍

Pressure is very individual, best to experiment and see what works. Nothing wrong with changing tyre pressure while you're on the trail either.

I always stop and engage my front suspension. Can't imagine a long gravel cruise w/o shock absorbers.
Shockstop stem plus fat 650bs is all the comfort I need.

Buddy get yourself a hardtail mtb with a thudbuster seat post - I think Juliet is a great girl......but the terrain she is on is mtb zone imho

Correction 32 mil to start with and switched to 38’s
Yes, a wider rim will make the same tyre wider when mounted. Tyre width sizes really are just guidelines.
Cross bikes 33mm tires "legal". But my Giant TCX can fit 42/44mm at 700c, and 2"/2.1" tires at 650b.
