When I reidid the patio last year and pulled up the granite slabs that had been there for 14 years, the slabs already had the same material crusted on the bottoms. Same with rocks that are in the dirt. So I think things don't have to be buried deep or long for that to happen. In this area of Wyoming, as I put in the description, these swings between deposition/erosion seem to happen frequently enough.
