Hey so I filmed this video last week and some stuff has changed! I still stand by most of it. The OGL stuff is probably wrong, it's still not OFFICIALLY confirmed the new OGL will be bad, but it seems like it will be.
So really, the part I'm standing by most is "if they mess up the OGL, F**k 'em we'll learn a new system". I honestly didn't think they'd be foolish enough to fumble the bag this hard, but I guess I underestimated them. There was a part of me that thought they might (hence me saying "F**K em if they mess up the OGL) but I thought they'd have the decency to wait until after the D&D movie came out to do that- if they did it at all.,
Nobody is reading this anyway, continue further to post your comment about how wrong I was about the OGL.

I still maintain that it's perfectly possible to make a Sephiroth build with Omnislash, you just need to drop the Rogue levels that Tulok went for and instead sink 2 levels of Fighter into the build instead. Pick up Steel Wind Strike as well as Metamagic Adept: Quickened Spell as you invest the rest of the levels in Bladesong Wizard. After that a simple combo gets you what you want: Quickened Spell: Steel Wind Strike > Booming Blade > Action Surge > Attack > Extra Attack Cantrip: Booming Blade. That is 5+1+1+1 melee attacks at Lv.11... Ergo, a legitimate Octaslash! And on the next level you're going to be able to upgrade that into Steel Wind Strike > Action Surge > Steel Wind Strike for a "Decaslash" if you feel like it.

@@StriderZessei Truuue but then again the Final Fantasy anime swordsman final boss build will pretty much always be just out of reach stats-wise regardless (unless you roll up a character with a set of fixed die) so you kinda gotta pick your battles, y'know. And as far as I'm concerned? If I'm not going to be able to replicate the broken-tier stats anyway, then I may as well prioritize replicating the abilities as well as I possibly can. It's less min-max-y, sure, but I'm not a munchkin. ^^
(I've always actually kinda wondered why Square never invested in creating their own FF-based tabletop RPG. It seemed natural given their games' D&D origins.)

Since you mentioned Pokémon, something that could be a kind of spin-off of “Building Character” like with the Elden Ring builds that could be really fun is doing Pokémon runs where you build teams around a character, like “Oh, this character has Pokémon A because it fits their motif for this reason, and then Pokémon B because it reminds me of this ability of theirs”, etc.

On the plus side, migrating over to Pathfinder would give you way more options for character creation, from ancestries to backgrounds to classes and archetypes. Even if WotC doesn't kill the OGL, I know a lot of people are migrating to PF2e, so diversifying the portfolio, as it were, by dipping your toe in to making PF2e builds wouldn't be an awful idea.

$750,000 is gross not net, so a million dollar Kickstarter will probably have at least like $500,000-750,000 in expenses. Then paying 20% on the money over $750,000 is another $50,000 off the top. That's also assuming that they don't decide to lower that $750,000 figure with 30 days notice, which could be after a Kickstarter campaign ended but has not been fulfilled.

EDIT: Rereading the description, this was made before more of the exact details of the new OGL came out, but for people who haven't seen or heard anything about that, this is going to run through the biggest concerns people have about it, which are mainly that: 1.) The new OGL is a complete and total replacement for EVERY OTHER VERSION of WotC's old OGLs, meaning that new third party content for 5e and 3.5e (and potentially even other games like Pathfinder that are built on the old OGLs) will fall under the new OGL, which makes it impossible to just not move on to OneD&D because newly made 5e stuff has to comply with the new OGL, which is a complete contradiction to WotC's 20+ year promise that the current OGL couldn't and wouldn't be changed or overwritten; 2.) Any content made in the new OGL (which includes new stuff for old games/editions, and all sorts of content including streamed games like future seasons of CR or D20) becomes the property of WotC, and they can reproduce it, use it for their own books/content, or take it down however and whenever they want; and 3.) The 50k/750k marks aren't for the actual profits a creator/company makes, they apply to the total money brought in before production costs are paid back, meaning that companies and even relatively small teams who make physical books or do live shows/streams, or sell merch can hit the mark for owing WotC royalties despite not making anywhere close to 750k in actual profits. Knowing that a lot of creators don't make a ton of profits off of their content, there's a real chance this will really hurt a lot of people.
This video obviously is pretty outdated about the whole situation as people are discussing it currently, but under the new OGL, WotC would essentially be trying to take ownership of every single piece of new D&D (and possibly Pathfinder) content that's published after the new OGL takes effect, and there wouldn't be any recourse for creators, unless a law firm decides to spend years and likely millions fighting Hasbro in court over the decision to back out on the old OGL.
As a huge fan of both Magic: the Gathering and D&D who has watched Hasbro pretty thoroughly fuck over one of my favorite games over the past couple years in hopes that they could double their yearly earnings several years in a row, I really don't think they deserve the benefit of the doubt on this one when they've already stated that they think D&D is undermonetized, especially given that their solution to Magic's "undermonetization" was selling $250 booster packs of random, tournament-unusable cards. WotC has had no issues driving Magic's reputation and community good will into the ground recently, and I can't help but feel like they're going to do the exact same thing to D&D if people don't rally hard against them (and I also think it's important that people coming to this video in the future understand exactly what's up with the situation as we currently understand it)

Waste of time??? Bro - this is a great opportunity - maybe your backlog will be out dated, but those that continue to play the version it will be great. With the update you can revisit all of those builds and build them again. What a great source of income!! Better than Hollywood remakes - as yours will be a new adventure! Personally I can't wait to see how your learning curve (and perspective) is with the new material - again great fodder for a channel as cool as this one!! I'm with you for the long haul!

I’m pretty surprised that you haven’t covered Adventure Time yet for Building Character. If I had to guess, I’d say Finn’s a Reborn Samurai Fighter/Artificer to be able to get BMO or NEPTR, Jake’s a Bugbear Rune Knight Fighter/Open Hand Monk, PB’s a Reborn Alchemist Artificer, and Marceline’s a Vampire Spirits Bard

Joined my first gaming table in high school just before 4e came out, they and everyone was super pissed about GSL. I played maybe 1 session of 3.5 before we switched to Pathfinder for exactly these reasons: if we have to learn a new system, why not learn a new system where we can make homebrew and support the brewers? But DnD Next was released and became 5e, and 5e was pretty good, so in the early wave of the current renaissance we all switched again, now in separate groups in separate states. Soon as this new OGL stuff came to light? The old gang’s reconnected over Discord to learn Pathfinder 2e together, so we can teach it to our new groups. Haven’t talked to some of them in a decade, thanks for fucking up WotC ❤

Pathfinder 2E is a fantastic system. More people should try it out. I straight up prefer it to 5e (its nothing like 3 or 3.5. It kind of takes the best ideas of 4e and 5e and combines them but with WAY more player and dm tools and options).

I love your videos but there are only so many anime characters I've never watched take 20 levels in a single class I can appreciate. What games are you interested in? Spending one of the new Thursday videos talking about that could lead the community to make suggestions. Building a Commander Magic the Gathering Deck as the Iron Man could be a fun watch, playing a Pokemon Scarlet playthrough with a team based on the Hulk could be amusing. In the DND vein a choose your own adventure video series could be fun or detailing DND sessions to run as a DM and putting the dungeon maps on Patreon could be cool. I really just want to see you be as successful as possible while enjoying the content you are making. Best of luck!

(We did did not switch from 4e to 5e until Xanathar’s came out- we like options). So keep doing what you’re doing friend! If the OGL leak that came out earlier today was correct then any 5e Hombrew and Pathfinder (1E and 2E) will be subject to the new OGL 1.1 since it supersedes the existing 1.0 licence (though there will likely be a lengthy legal battle to decide how enforceable that is if it is released in the current state). Seems like the lesson they took from 4e was to cover their asses so no one can compete without starting from square one or giving WotC a ridiculously large portion of their revenue. A lot of what you've said in this video regarding the OGL can be summed up as "we can just use a system with a permissive OGL like Pathfinder or 5E" but at this point that's exactly what WotC is trying to remove as an option. Might be worth reconsidering now that we have more up to date info since if this OGL leak is accurate then that point is moot. This isn't meant to be a gotcha or anything like that, I didn't think the new OGL would be anywhere near as egregious as what was in the leak, but after reading the news it's just really difficult to listen to people defending WotC by saying "you have other options" when they're actively trying to destroy alternatives to One DnD.

While the idea of WotC fumbling again and kind of imploding with One Dnd is both funny and exasperating, the fact that we'll be getting more fun homebrew and wholey new ventures is exciting.
If things end up going to F-it route, I do wonder what Pathfinder esque creations might rise from it. Maybe in a year from now, we'll be getting videos from you on using those systems.
Regardless, I do hope you make more things that you want to make and that they're successful. Know it would be a ton of work, but a live play in Moriae has been a dream since the Wire Weaver came out.

I’m planning on still playing 5e. If it’s not broke don’t fix it. Also OneD&D seems like minor changes. I don’t wanna buy new books or use the virtual tabletop. So there’s really no point in playing One.
Also the attempts to revoke the old OGL is scummy and I don’t wanna support their new business decisions.
So your backlog content will still be viable for me and people like me :)

  • @kevinphiggins

Fun Fact about D&D and plagiarism, my local D&D convention (PrinceCon) has only ever banned two people. One was some rando who got banned for being a jerk. The other? Gary Gygax. The story is that he ripped off somebody’s homebrew monster and they got salty about it so they banned the creator of the entire game system.

  • @firesidefae1379
    @firesidefae1379 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Honestly, Highly recommend Pathfinder 2e.
It's a really good mix of 3.5 and 5e. Instead of selecting a subclass and getting basically your entire kit decided for you, you get 40+ feats to distribute. Sounds like a lot, but imagine if instead of 5e giving you a set linier progression, you got to select skills from any of the subclass options for your class, and mix and match as you went? Or, imagine being able to pick up a more focused set of skills, like archery, or getting really good with two weapon fighting, without sacrificing your main class skills.
It's got the simplified modifiers and skill checks of 5e, with a more expansive character build and what I think is a more explorable combat system with 3 actions per turn. Don't need to move? Want to make another attack instead? Go for it.
Ultimately people will enjoy different things, but I highly recommend anyone that enjoys being able to make personalized builds, or explore a vast character builder of feats and skills, give P2e a try.

I genuinely think doing "rebuilds" is probably not a bad idea, especially if OneD&D becomes widely accepted by the player base. And if OneD&D isn't widely accepted by the player base, then I'm sure most of them will still be playing 5E and your videos are safe! Obviously, I have no idea how content creation within the avenue of Dungeons and Dragons works, so my word is worth very little lol
