Man I need to change my life. Turning 30 soon, unemployed, and broke. Love listening to Rich's podcast. So many interesting people, stories and gems of information.
Feel the same way, 27 yo here and looking at what skills will reap the most reward. Healthy suffering/stress over the stress of never giving something a shot.
I’m on my 6th career in life at 49 years old. Wall Street, then sales at 2 technology startups. Then became a renowned leather craftsman, etc etc. Starting my next career with a small video camera. The Covid turned a growing business into absolute zero. Just taking this time to learn new video tricks & ideas. ALWAYS BE CURIOUS. WITH A GROWTH MINDSET.
I love all of these stories because we're all constantly growing and evolving wherever we are. As much as we love to attach age to these discussions, it really isn't relevant. I'm 31 and trying to change the way I think in order to make more mindful and productive decisions--reading things like this gives me an extra boost in knowing that I am not alone. Good luck to everyone on their respective journeys!
Liberation, finding your soul purpose, living a life of meaning, giving back…. all the while enjoying the ride! So much wisdom here, plus the rhythm around work and family, could a podcast be any more inspirational? This is like cultivating your life as a work of art.
1:17:00 YES!!!! As a long distance bikepacker, this is exactly it! This is that feeling you get on the bike! I have done so many other sports, and even hiking the Appalachian Trail doesn’t come close. Long distance bike riding is the most meditative beautiful experience and you become your own best friend. It’s just so expansive and peaceful. I fully agree with what he’s talking about and now I feel inspired to do a bike ride! Thank you for this convo!
For having being one of Chris big fan for many years now, this pod interview has open a much deeper level of understanding of his profound humanity, and his sensibilities, absolutely magnificent and broad understanding of the planet we call home. What a gem of a visual episode. Thank you both for this.
i'm from morro bay. i remember maaaaany years ago, when the surf project came out, my dad had me go to his shop and get a signed copy. he was really sweet, handed the copy over and wished me well as i left. he was always talented, and i am so thrilled to see his platform now. go get 'em chris!
Chris is an exceptional human. I loved to see him blushing at the beginning, seemingly so humble . . . but that's who he really is. Rich, excellent interview as always. And kudos to the cinematographer that lit the studio!
I watched UNNUR before sunrise this morning. I couldn’t sleep and was surfing Instagram, came upon Chris’s feed and found this film. Bravo. I was dreaming of being back in Iceland and had just devoured my friends feed who lives in the Westfjords. It’s the most amazing place.
I love documentaries, and 'Under An Arctic Sky' was one that captivated me. I had no idea who Chris Burkard was until now. Thanks for revealing these beautiful souls, Rich Roll. :)
So really unexpected to hear about Chris experience in my hometown Vladivostok on the Rich Roll podcast ! Thank you for such inspiring episode ! Send you love from the Russia's far east !
I don’t know what’s with you guys. Travis Rice had the same problem on his expedition. Your talking about some of the best genuine people on this planet still having problems in your country. It’s absurd!
I love me some Burkard! This guy has always responded to me on social it just shows you how authentic this dude is. I have a piece of his Yosemite art on my wall right now. Also, Rich I just discovered your podcast. I loved your interview with Dr. Huberman. Thank you
Chris was so moved by his own Experience of the Site in Nicuaragua and at the Situation the People and Children were in. A genuine guy, with Depth to Pursue his Art.His honesty shines through, is it True?
This is some great stuff, Rich! Been following Chris’ work for so long but it’s great to gain some insight into his journey and learnings! And no one could’ve brought it out the way you did! Thanks a lot 😊 Your perseverance and the quality of content pushed me to start my own video podcast series. Thanks for that too! 🙌🏻
It will be nice when the famous adventure folk decide to sit tight, no travel, no toys and build a garden and take their audience with them, showing/learning a path of more sustainability.
1hr: There's a lot to be said for not satiating your amygdala. If you tease it with material wealth, it's like manipulating yourself, perhaps only person we should manipulate. If you pander to it's drive, you become decadent outside of spirituality surrounding something approaching Shiva's, Virūḍhaka's and Hecate's archetype. You can only be royal if you truly are, not appointed by God, but by genetic, introverted and extroverted expression. Desire is the source of all love, like chaos is of peace, ignorance is of truth and limitations are of liberty. I'm fairly intuitive/intellectual/geeky, I guess and people see in me that my amygdala lights up, but, it's not something naturally from myself. People drape ego on us from own lack of understand of the mind. Sometimes, if we're feeling weak, we will become indoctrinated to other and it can change our genetic code by virtue of how information is conserved... matter has taken hold your mind. Always be careful be careful around unintelligent and unwise people, especially if they're fascistic, damaged goods. Fascism is born by absorbing other people's defensive strategies of how to deal with their toxicity turned into vain attempts at justifying their evil. Alan Watts once asked, in regards to how the old masters did it and he said, "Well, a load of nothing of course." Magic cannot be emulated; it is the cutting of consciousness and the universe itself.
No disrespect but its been 1 hr and the guy has been repeating the same thing over and over and talks like hes absolutely fascinated with himself. Has yet to say anything of substance. We get it dude, being uncomfortable is good, and you did some stuff
how do you educate people about the value of our planet without sending 8 million instagram followers to leave more plastic on that pristine beach in the middle of nowhere?
Rich Roll was cool until he became another privileged white guy talking to and about other, privileged, white guys.. He reminds me of Drake -- "started from the bottom, now I'm here," yet it's laughable how "hard" his journey has really been. I always appreciate perspective but the struggle isn't -- nor wasn't -- there. Rich Roll's book is indeed interesting, but again, the struggle he describes is of privilege -- not effort.

I swear, not that anyone cares, while watching last episode, I was hoping more than anything he'd have Chris on. This is awesome! Very next guest.
My father is an adventurer too. This interview really helped me understand him better. Beautiful interview.

It's so good to hear Chris chat, and learning he grew up in disproportionate circumstances. What a maddog \m/
Chris super inspiring as always but hats off to Rich for how he does the interview, extracting those gems of wisdom.

Rich is handsome! B
Somebody should tell him if he really wants to be cold and bored, come to Minnesota.

He actually said “I want an enema” (хочу клизму) at 1:09:01, not “I need an enema, please”. Which is even funnier, in my opinion.
🙏💜
No disrespect but its been 1 hr and the guy has been repeating the same thing over and over and talks like hes absolutely fascinated with himself. Has yet to say anything of substance. We get it dude, being uncomfortable is good, and you did some stuff
You need to listen to it again and breath deeply (he is the guest and is meant to talk about himself...peace)
Sorry to say this but you're the one who lost his chance of saying something of substance Tim.
