When I was doing my vocational training, I became the go-to guy for brake line work. I don't know why. I was good at it sure, but, let the remedial kids have a try. But the instructor knew throwing the car at me meant it'd get done and they'd have a happy customer. Well, one morning I got a late '80s Chrysler/Dodge Dynasty that had the same sit rep as that last Subaru. No pedal, no brakes. Multiple leak points. The car was a total rot-box, but it was one of the other instructors' cars. So, regardless of how much I protested, they forced me to fix it. Well, you know just as well... rusty brake line don't take kindly to being double-flared. And even if it IS possible, the flare might have a pit in it and be leaky. So other than the lines from the master to the ABS unit..... I replaced every single G-D steel brake line in that car and all the rubber ones. I had started out just patching in sections, but as soon as you'd get pressure on the system, the next weakest point would rupture. So I just said to hell with it - got the whole roll of brake line out of the tool room and went to town.
And as luck would have it, (yes they would charge the customers, but at a discounted rate).... but the total for four rubber lines, 30-some feet of steel line, fittings, unions, etc. plus the several hours it took..... of course they were unhappy with the bill.

What are those 'fears about mechs' ?
In your country people assume malicious intent at car repair shops ?
I handed my Ford to a Ford dealer repair shop for 6 years, never had a complaint.
Handed a Nissan Micra to a local all-brand repair shop for 4 years, never had a complaint.
In general, I expect them to do the work I hire them to do and so-far it is done to my satisfaction, mostly :p
Just once, I didn't have much money at the time, I had a VW Golf Diesel, that had to get it's yearly inspection, the cost of the inspection itself was €40, any necessary repairs go on top of that.
I handed the car to a VW dealer shop with the instruction to not go over €500
Day later, call came that I could pick up the car, I went and the bill stated €850
I offered them the €500 which they wouldn't accept, at first ...
That is just once though, in 35 years of driving.
Not enough to suspect every single one of them.

I've been to precisely two mechanic shops. First time I took it to Goodyear for a wobble in the front end. (I was young and inexperienced.) They told me the tierod was bent and showed me some part. I looked at it, saw a bend, and was like, "OK." Left, still had the wobble. Turned out to be a bubble in the tire. And what they showed me wasn't even a tierod (I looked it up later). Second time, about 2 decades later, I took my Jeep to Big-O for some new tires. Had 0 problems getting there. They put on the tires and told me I had a brake line leak. They give me the car back, I have no pressure at all. Yes, they did draw my attention to the brake line that I didn't realize was rusty. But I'm thinking they did a poke test on the rust and ruptured it themselves. Otherwise, a leak like that I would have noticed much sooner (due to lack of brakes or at least sponginess). So, no, I don't trust mechanics unless I can watch them do the work myself. I mean, like, practically be like shoulder to shoulder with them. I know how to do the vast majority of repairs myself, I just don't have a good space or a lot of the specialty tools to do anything but routine maintenance.
But, you're right. I'd trust Ray here.

As a mechanic myself that can't always work on my own cars I can tell you the struggle to find a good one is real.

We used to have a big issue with "good ol' boy" mechanics who'd slap an inspection sticker on just about anything that wasn't actively on fire. I remember being a little **** in the '70s, riding along when Mom took a beater (or as we called it, the family car) Ford Maverick in for its yearly inspection. Guy said he just couldn't inspect it because of the gaping holes that were rusted through the body. Mom was pretty upset, and asked what she was supposed to do. Said something about how she was used to walking, having grown up poor, but it would be hard to carry a week's worth of groceries home from the grocery store whilst trying to keep me from getting run over (I had more sense than that, she was just upset). So the guy walked off, came back, and handed her a roll of duct tape. He told her to drive the car out of his sight and cover the holes with tape, then bring it back. She used most of the roll, LMAO - and he inspected the car for her.
A couple years later, she went back to the same guy to get her "new" car inspected. It wasn't all rusted out - was an early '70s Cutlass Supreme that was shiny as could be. Instead of putting it on the lift and pulling a couple wheels to inspect the brakes, he told her to put the emergency/parking brake on, stick it in drive, and floor it. He... was standing in front of the car at the time! He had to tell her two or three times, because she didn't think it was a good idea. Between her right foot, the 455 under the hood, and his stupidity... he almost ended up with two crushed legs. However, inspection... PASSED.
There is considerably less of that these days - but it still happens.

REGARDING THE SUBARU BRAKE BLOCK: you can replace that with two commonly available female-to-female brass fittings. They are used to join two pieces of standard brake line together. For us home mechanics who don't have flaring tools, the parts store sells the hydraulic steel brake lines in various lengths. We can bend and route it through or around the frame and body and join them together when/where we need to. As they rarely ended up being the exact correct length, I would have an extra coil or loop tucked or tie-wrapped some where in the run.

However, in states like Texas (my state,) we have a yearly inspection except for vehicles 1-3 years old which have one every 3 years. states are realonsible for emissions tests.. not the federal government. i heard california is the worst. people say california milks their drivers for every dime they can get.

13:10 fyi you should still be able to get that brake line joint connector, # 26534AA000. Wonder what happened there with the brake lines, I've seen far, far worse on subaru message boards that weren't leaking there. Customer tried to remove line and stripped it? Subaru has their WQK47 recall, but I don't think that applies to this year since this leggy looks to be pre-2005. The recall was just to spray anti-corrosion wax on that brake line block and some other parts that can fail, but it's just a cheap band-aid, some people still have failures after the wax has been applied. Some legacy owners cut the brake lines under the seat and splice in there, and then just run ni-copp down into a new joint connector block, and then nicopp to each rear right/left caliper.

Hi Ray, I watched your videos for a while, subscribed, I’m in the UK! After a vehicle is 3 years old we have to have an MOT to get a certificate to continue use. Most of the cars you receive would have failed the MOT and been scrapped. I cannot understand how people in the USA can actually drive these vehicles. It make it understandable why you have such serious accidents. Keep up the good work.

Many of the US owners have no idea how far gone their vehicles actually are, and aren't worried about what they don't know. But most US accidents are driver-caused, not vehicle-caused, which is amazing given the many times more vehicles in the US than in the UK.

That was a really cool episode, that's the part of working on vehicles that most people don't get to see, even though I've been out of the business for well over 10 years it's reassuring to see some things never change, I had a car come in one day and the customer stated they were having a little brake noise, when I pulled the wheels the passenger front had ground down to the cooling fins on both sides of the rotor don't know how they kept from blowing out the caliper.

It really does beggar the mind. I was a Mech in the Army, got called into the office to be faced with my boss and a Lt. The brakes on his Accord weren't right. Righty ho. Had a look and the f/rotors were .0008 " warped. Replaced. All good. Bugger me he was back in two weeks just apoplectic. His brakes were NFG. Had a look. Warped.
Back in the office. Gave doombrain the good news. `Sir, you have just had new tyres fitted. The shop has over torqued the nuts and ruined the rotors (Accords were famous for this). Slammed it in, pealed off a perfect salute and said that unfortunately I have Army vehicles to fix. Gave my boss an evil look and marched out.

"Going to come out easy or not"
Came out so easy it was surprising, but giving how much play was in that wheel not really too surprising.
    "that truck"
When I was a mechanic and manager of a shop, if a customer brought something like that in, I would tell my guys to refuse to work on it. Its not worth the possible liability of anything going wrong and sometimes I was under the impression that a customer was hoping that we would not document the condition of the vehicle when it was brought in. So they could sue, but we always documented everything.
Side note, that frame is using all of its remaining strength to support the body. That frame if it was not still together would collapse, as none of it could hold up individually. Honestly, you should not even attempt to jack or lift something like that, as you could cause the remaining body to bend under its own weight.
    "Car with no brakes"
That is one of those handbrake special models, lol, jk. Did the customer do that bolt? Definitely could not be another shop, that would be a lawsuit that would be easy to win. Also who would think its a good idea to plug their brake line with a bolt, smh.
