    I grew up just a few blocks from here in the early 90's. My dad and I would go there at least once a month. I remember watching LeRoy work in the back room just carving away. Love that place.

      When he found out I'm from New Braunfels, LeRoy started telling me about being stationed in San Antonio when he was in the military. That was a loooong time ago!

    I really enjoyed your video.we were out in August. I didn't even know anything then about the closing he didn't tell us so it was a surprise when I got the email.
    But thank God for people that have made videos to keep it in history. I know oceanics arts will be a thing in the past but we're planning on coming out for his 90th birthday it's going to be hard not going to the shop. A thing of our life forever.
    The two statues in the front of the man and the woman don't ever look under their cloth because they're anatomically correct LOL. My son got lucky he wanted a t-shirt they had a hanging and they gave it to him and turns out it was the last one there's no more so he's got something to treasure forever. Thanks so much for this video it was awesome.

      I bought one of those shirts on my visit! He wasn't sure if they had my size, but I lucked out! And yeah, Bob was tight-lipped about closing. Had I known, I probably would've bought a fish trap and figured out a way to ship it home!

    So now that Oceanic Arts has closed 😢 where does everyone go to buy their tiki stuff? IE Hollywood, Disney, Bars and places like that?

    • @LagoonofMystery
      @LagoonofMystery  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Scattered around at many different sources. Commercial bar builds can hire Bamboo Ben or Tiki Ranch or Notch who source their materials. Forever Bamboo, Bamboo Creasian and Backyard Xcapes are sources for matting I've used in the past. Other places like www.piecesofship.com in Galveston have some amazing carvings and nautical decor. There's no one-stop shopping any longer.

    JUST went to there website and it states they are permanently closing as of today November 24th to General sales and walk ins. So sad but they have had such an neat business and retirement is well earned!

    • @LagoonofMystery
      @LagoonofMystery  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I KNOW! I mean, yes, Bob and LeRoy have certainly earned their retirement. But I REALLY REALLY they'd given us a month's notice or so, to get in some farewell orders. From what I understand, they posted the announcement to their website yesterday. No advance word at all.
      I did order the book, tho.

      @@LagoonofMystery the book website mentioned a future auction so that means that someone with deep pockets will likely get most of it. If it means a new neat Tiki bar then that will be nice. Maybe Forever Bamboo will expand their product line to fill the vacuum?
      You may know better what was mentioned about LeRoy's health, my hope is that he gets better and can enjoy retirement. I have a father who didn't close his business until poor health required it.

      @@stevemccord7118 Indeed. Alas, said auction is almost certain to be of the in-person variety, which means peons such as myself who are far removed from California won't be able to participate.

      Indeed it is! But for now, whilst they remain in Beta testing, only those who were previously grand members have log-in access. So I'm not yet able to update my Lagoon of Mystery thread in the home bar section. Still, progress is progress! 😁
