This song gave me the courage to finally report my ex stepdad to the police for what he did to me as a child. The extended reporting laws are a godsend. He will finally pay if the justice system does its job properly.
Hey I just wanted to say you're not alone. My father did the same to me for 15 yrs. The only reason he was reported is bc I told a friend of mine and she spoke up for me. The road to healing is tough but worth it in the end. Good luck on your journey 💜🖤
You can do this??? My step-dad also molested me. I know he has custody of his children, a boy and girl, and even tho I don't know the girl, I worry for her
A Short Story inspired by this Song- She had once been the loneliest girl in town. Now, her cheeks were flushed as she walked, away from the blazing cottage, away from her innocence. But, the fire behind her faded in comparison to the fire in her eyes. She had collected every piece of jewellery, everything that held any value before she set the flame. A single thought in mind- “It’s my turn now.” This was what she had dreamt of as a girl. Dressing up in pretty gowns and huge pearls. Living in a mansion. But, the dream was a heinous reality. She had been told to smile when he sneered, to court him even when his vulturous gaze ate her alive. This time with a whip. Her months in the cages had been the worst. She had watched as they traded gold for her and the others who shared her fate. Her buyers always brought her back, saying all she did was cry. She remembered how her mother had told her she was easy on the eyes. Was her innocence the price for her beauty?
“Ask for forgiveness never permission.” Disturbing thing is they wont even ask for forgiveness from the ones the victimized. They’ll ask *themselves* for forgiveness.
This song really depicts the the "tradition" of marriage in some cultures and how it's more of a transaction between the groom and the father of the bride...the lyric "ask for forgiveness never permission" is so haunting and realistic in "marriages" in said cultures and also in abusive relationships in general.
This happens in the Middle East, every place that is Muslim and practices Shariah Law. Women are abused by the tradition of the Muslim faith. It's not okay.

This song is so poetic and haunts me. I weep for all the women, right now and through the centuries, that were used, abused, sold, and not given a choice. Who were treated like pawns and objects in the eyes of men because it was tradition. We deserve to be free.
Uhhh…. A lot more men were abused & sold & killed than women. Are you nuts?? Who do you think MOST slaves were? Who do you think most forced into armies throughout history to fight & die in wars were?? Please, get over yourself, & live in reality. What feminist nonsense. And how are you not free…? Lol my gosh.
The best song on the album personally for me, so good, the piano is elegant, suspenseful and beautiful. The message is strong about the double entendre with 'tradition', toxic masculinity, loss of innocence and consent. Women who blindly trust tradition get the short end of the stick typically for the short comings of an immature or selfish husband. It's tragic that tradition is usually in favor of obedience from a submissive woman to a dominant male with plenty of riches, lacking constraints to ask for consent for intimacies because of entitlement and masculinity. Tragic that tradition is typically in favor of the perpetrator being forgiven for his crimes by the victim when he was the first on to commit the heinous acts than doing the right thing in the first place (consent). Is retaliation from the victim suddenly unjustified when they start to feel empowered by taking action? Very vexing and tragic cycle of pain and vengence. My confusing take on it.
All I can think about Halsey saying in an interview that this album is her saying goodbye to trauma being a part of her identity. I feel it with every song. Thank you Halsey for everything!

I’m crying cuz this song is real. All the things she talks about are real and still happening. As she says; they, men, always wanted us to ask for forgiveness for the things we did that are not wrong but they never asked for permission. And guess why? Everybody does them. It’s a tradition.
But they ACTUALLY DONT WANT FORGIVENESS !! they don’t give a fck lmaooo that’s the point that’s why they say what they say they don’ give a fuck ! “ boys will be boys “ fuckkkk that . Stop being so simple it’s basically satire but most women will get it
I’m really here for the collision of these worlds. I’m intrigued by Trent and Atticus deciding to collaborate with Halsey as she was going through the ringer of commercialism. These tracks are haunting, beautiful, intriguing, infuriating, haunting. I took time to start from her first video and watch through many throughout the years… the growth is profound. She is multifaceted, an artist.
Halsey's voice with Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross' production is the collab this world needed. So beautiful I could weep. Thank you for creating real ART in an era that's loaded with commercially driven "music". I bow down to Halsey.
I don't know how he does it, but everytime Trent starts playing piano, there is something in his style that always gives him away. So recognizable, so epic.
Oh, the loneliest girl in town Is bought for pennies a price We dress her up in lovely gowns She's easy on the eyes Her soul is black and it's a fact That her sneer will eat you alive And the buyer always brings her back Because all she does is cry [Chorus] So take what you want, take what you can Take what you please, don't give a damn Ask for forgiveness, never permission Take what you want, take what you can Take what you please, don't givе a damn It's in the blood and this is tradition Ooh-ooh [Verse 2] Oh, the loneliеst girl in town Was bought for plenty a price Well, they dress her up in golden crowns His smile hides a lie She smiles back, but it's a fact That her fear will eat her alive Well, she got the life that she wanted But now all she does is cry Take what you want, take what you can Take what you please, don't give a damn Ask for forgiveness, never permission Take what you want, take what you can Take what you please, don't give a damn It's in the blood and this is tradition [Bridge] You can't take it back, it's good as gone Well, flesh amnesiac, this is your song And I hope what's left will last all summer long And they said that boys were boys, but they were wrong [Chorus] Take what you want, take what you can Take what you please, don't give a damn Ask for forgiveness, never permission Take what you want, take what you can Take what you please, don't give a damn It's in the blood and this is tradition Take what you want, take what you can Take what you please, don't give a damn Ask for forgiveness, never permission Take what you want, take what you can Take what you please, don't give a damn It's in the blood and this is tradition
Halsey is powerfully genuine and I love everything about her way of expressing this. WE NEEDED THIS AND WE DIDN'T KNOW and that hurts. This is Halsey:pure, raw, brutal, caring, phenomenal art.
I am not trying to diminish Halsey's brilliant vocals and talent but love that new ppl are getting exposed to the genius of Trent Reznor. The combination of his production and arrangements plus Halsey's talent is magic.
This album is so mature and open. Every song has a different vibe and message. It feels like she's speaking my mind. If I had to dedicate an album to my life it would be this one. Spectacular work! A masterpiece! Our queen Halsey!
This is the album I've wanted all my life. While it will be awhile, I can't wait to hear what Halsey does next. One of the greatest singers of this generation.
The first song that caught my attention was gasoline. I’ve considered Trent a genius since the beginning. Btw i know im not alone feeling this way. Only into the first track and know this is album gonna be gold. So many want to work with Trent yet they don’t. Im not sure if it’s because he is intimidating or what. Im glad Halsey was able to gather herself and write that letter that sparked a seed to create this.
Many don't because they dont have the balls to ask. Many don't because Trent doesn't like their kinda work - not necessarily bad, just doesnt mesh with him.
Lifelong Trent fan here...Reznor has ALWAYS been ahead of his time. I love each and every road and avenue his genius takes me. That journey led me here and I'm here to tell you to get on that bus folks cause it's a fun, strange, and interesting trip.
Such a soothing voice and such poetic words to make an important statement. I’m always left amazed by the impact that Halsey’s songs have on me. She’s truly an artist because she’s able to tell stories and get to people’s heart through great music Love from Italy
I’ve waited so patiently for this new album. Just so happened to be the day after my birthday. 💜 It's been such a rough journey the last several years and Halsey’s music has gotten me through some of the darkest times. It's like she knew exactly what I was going through. My son knows her music so well that when he heard me listening to it, without him even knowing it was her, he asked is that Halsey?! 💜🌸 I will forever have respect for her and her masterpieces.
Halsey is truly an artist, every song makes you feel, it's related with the inner turmoil we feel, the problems we face, there's a song she has regarding it and most are so empowering. I don't think a musical artist has ever affected me so much in such a way
“Oh the loneliеst girl in town Was bought for plenty a price they dress her up in golden crowns His smile hides a lie She smiles back, but it's a fact That her fear will eat her alive she got the life that she wanted But now all she does is cry“ This kinda makes me think of Princess Diana…
This had me completely gripped. Yes, empowerment is important, but I like this new perspective -- instead of just lifting people up after hell, it's like Halsey is saying that, hey, this is a problem. Forget about raising people up -- let's stop them from falling down.
I can hear so much NIN influence in this album, especially this song, and I absolutely love it. I am HERE for it. Hopefully they do more collabs together, this is one of the most hauntingly beautiful and mesmerizing albums I have heard in a long time.
A masterpiece is an understatement. This depicts what sexual harassment, trafficking, and violence is. It is terrifying and disturbing thinking that this is becomes “tradition” in our lives.

As someone who was sexually abused by my stepdad for years this song actually makes sense.
When you are used and your body sold.. you'll never understand how hard these words hit your soul.
HALSEY YOUR VOICE HAS SOMETHING WHICH YOU DON'T KNOW HOW MUCH SOOTHING AND CALM.❤️ SEND MY LOVE TO MY LITTLE BROTHER ❤️

Everything Halsey does is amazing. The way she is able to portray the meanings behind this entire album is insane

This is amazing as always Halsey
Halsey's voice with Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross' production is the collab this world needed. So beautiful I could weep. Thank you for creating real ART in an era that's loaded with commercially driven "music". I bow down to Halsey.
I don't know how he does it, but everytime Trent starts playing piano, there is something in his style that always gives him away. So recognizable, so epic.
I love everything Halsey

Oh, the loneliest girl in town
Is bought for pennies a price
We dress her up in lovely gowns
She's easy on the eyes
Her soul is black and it's a fact
That her sneer will eat you alive
And the buyer always brings her back
Because all she does is cry
[Chorus]
So take what you want, take what you can
Take what you please, don't give a damn
Ask for forgiveness, never permission
Take what you want, take what you can
Take what you please, don't givе a damn
It's in the blood and this is tradition
Ooh-ooh
[Verse 2]
Oh, the loneliеst girl in town
Was bought for plenty a price
Well, they dress her up in golden crowns
His smile hides a lie
She smiles back, but it's a fact
That her fear will eat her alive
Well, she got the life that she wanted
But now all she does is cry
Take what you want, take what you can
Take what you please, don't give a damn
Ask for forgiveness, never permission
Take what you want, take what you can
Take what you please, don't give a damn
It's in the blood and this is tradition
[Bridge]
You can't take it back, it's good as gone
Well, flesh amnesiac, this is your song
And I hope what's left will last all summer long
And they said that boys were boys, but they were wrong
[Chorus]
Take what you want, take what you can
Take what you please, don't give a damn
Ask for forgiveness, never permission
Take what you want, take what you can
Take what you please, don't give a damn
It's in the blood and this is tradition
Take what you want, take what you can
Take what you please, don't give a damn
Ask for forgiveness, never permission
Take what you want, take what you can
Take what you please, don't give a damn
It's in the blood and this is tradition
Vamos ser sinceros que a Halsey é uma artista completa , falo sem medo algum e todos trabalhos dela são incríveis na minha opinião

Mano ela é arte pura pqp essa mulher manooo todo album ela arrasa
“Ask for forgiveness, Never permission” ooohhhh that hits so hard
Such a smoothly voice
WHAT A BEAUTIFUL OPENING FOR THIS ICONIC ALBUM OMG
THE PIANO IS A MASTERPIECE EVEN BY ITSELF
This album is a STORY of a journey between rock bottom and the top… it’s beautiful. It’s such a humble album in my opinion.
This song gives me GOT vibe
I definitely hear Trent Reznor here. Those classic flat keys. Almost sounds like "Hurt" at times.
bless her team for putting the lyrics in the desc too. im trying to learn these in case i buy tickets to a concert of hers someday

Halsey is powerfully genuine and I love everything about her way of expressing this. WE NEEDED THIS AND WE DIDN'T KNOW and that hurts. This is Halsey:pure, raw, brutal, caring, phenomenal art.
"She got the life she wanted but now all she does is cry" The entire celeb culture in 2seconds
I am not trying to diminish Halsey's brilliant vocals and talent but love that new ppl are getting exposed to the genius of Trent Reznor. The combination of his production and arrangements plus Halsey's talent is magic.
A lot of these lyrics are about child sex trafficking. Definitely a topic a lot of artists don't even dare to talk about. I commend Ashley for this.
I love the fact that this is empowering ("her sneer will eat you alive" etc) while still showing that the girl has issues ("all she does is cry" etc)
This album is a MASTERPIECE so in love with this album
Esse conceito é tão a cara da Halsey , eu pessoalmente vejo poucos artistas abordando tão claro e versátil como ela
A melanie lembra ela , bem complexa em tudo o que faz ... Amuuh

I can't express how much I LOVE this song.
One of my fav on the 'bum so far
her voice is so beautiful i can’t 😭
This album is so mature and open. Every song has a different vibe and message. It feels like she's speaking my mind. If I had to dedicate an album to my life it would be this one. Spectacular work! A masterpiece! Our queen Halsey!
I've played this 4 times over already
This song is amazing !
Halsey you're burning my soul and purifying it in the most remarkable way honey.
This is how she spread glory deep in our hearts 💞
This is the album I've wanted all my life. While it will be awhile, I can't wait to hear what Halsey does next. One of the greatest singers of this generation.
The first song that caught my attention was gasoline. I’ve considered Trent a genius since the beginning. Btw i know im not alone feeling this way. Only into the first track and know this is album gonna be gold. So many want to work with Trent yet they don’t. Im not sure if it’s because he is intimidating or what. Im glad Halsey was able to gather herself and write that letter that sparked a seed to create this.
I'm actually surprised he wants to work with people
Dude I will recommend them to everyone now
Many don't because they dont have the balls to ask. Many don't because Trent doesn't like their kinda work - not necessarily bad, just doesnt mesh with him.
NOFUCKINGBODY can tell a tale like halsey. This is beyond all expectations.
The fact that every music has the diffrent style is fucking fucking fucking great
oml I’ve been a fan since badlands, and have been waiting for this for foreverrr
The song is hauntingly beautiful
Wow. How profound. Crazy. Such a powerful song. Still just mind blown how she is so creative and thinks of such mind blowing lyrics with such purpose.
Lifelong Trent fan here...Reznor has ALWAYS been ahead of his time. I love each and every road and avenue his genius takes me. That journey led me here and I'm here to tell you to get on that bus folks cause it's a fun, strange, and interesting trip.
the whole song is a amazing but the bridge is a MASTERPIECE
Such a soothing voice and such poetic words to make an important statement.
I’m always left amazed by the impact that Halsey’s songs have on me. She’s truly an artist because she’s able to tell stories and get to people’s heart through great music
Love from Italy
I’d do so much to sing on a track with you 💜
This entire project is grabbing me by the guts and i'm here for it.
This has got to be one of my favourite songs. The raw emotion, the lyrics, the storytelling. I've got chills when I think about this song.
Trent's influence is all over this track! He's amazing!
I'm addicted to halsey's song✨️
I love this halsey!! You always make my day, I’d say my favorite song of yours is 929, 11 minutes, colors, drive, and hurricane!!
Man, this epic song oozes Trent Reznor, and Halsey takes it to a new level.
I love everything about this. Halsey with Reznor and Ross are pure genius. The sound of this song also gives me old school Tori Amos vibes.
you can hear NIN+ all through this!!
💜🌸 I will forever have respect for her and her masterpieces.

she does NOT miss
Halsey is truly an artist, every song makes you feel, it's related with the inner turmoil we feel, the problems we face, there's a song she has regarding it and most are so empowering. I don't think a musical artist has ever affected me so much in such a way
tha fact that this song is so calming but at the same time it’s brutal and aggressive, I love it, probably my favourite from the album
Check out Trent Reznors other work if you like this track.

This kinda makes me think of Princess Diana…
this album is astonishingly good, never holds back. Halsey & NIN are the perfect organism, and this track is one hell of an opener.
I love Halsey, but you can just SENSE the melody and production by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross… what an amazing combo ♥️🖤
This has such a profound meaning, indeed a work of art.
This had me completely gripped. Yes, empowerment is important, but I like this new perspective -- instead of just lifting people up after hell, it's like Halsey is saying that, hey, this is a problem. Forget about raising people up -- let's stop them from falling down.
Wow. I could sense Trent Reznor-NIN vibes from the first notes. And Halsey is awesome as always. Goosebumps!
I can hear so much NIN influence in this album, especially this song, and I absolutely love it. I am HERE for it. Hopefully they do more collabs together, this is one of the most hauntingly beautiful and mesmerizing albums I have heard in a long time.
