Difficult Landings & Takeoffs during STORM BRENDAN | Direct CROSSWIND at Bristol Airport

  • Storm Brendan hit the UK on Monday 13th January 2020, bringing with it heavy rain and a very strong wind. Bristol Airport was one of the many airports across the UK affected - here's 30 minutes of plane spotting action showing many challenging landings and takeoffs in a formidable crosswind.
    The wind was blowing directly across the runway for the whole day. This video was shot between 11:15-13:30 with the wind getting progressively worse throughout the session, with gusts of 34 knots towards the end - too strong for the KLM which had to abort their landing as the wind was out of their limits! 🛫 I wish I could've stayed longer as the wind continued to strengthen but along with the wind came the rain. 🌧
    I hope you enjoyed the video, if you did please hit the 'like/thumbs up' button and share it with your friends! 😀

    Good training for those with low hours, or not much experience of crosswinds . During training it’s not always possible to find crosswinds close to the limits of the aircraft. Lot’s of pedal work going on there! Well done guys and gals.

    Great video, well done. I spent some time at GLA on Monday afternoon, a bit later in the day and watched the EZY from BRS divert to EDI because of the 60 degree x-wind. We were gusting up to 47k at 3.30pm. These boys and girls earn their money on days like that!

    just great. First I saw today a video from Manchester, but I have friends near Bristol and I land frequently in Bristol and was wondering how it was today with this storm there, and here we are. Each single shot is great and thrilling and many little special situations we can see here. Top! Subscribed (the third aviation channel I subscribed this week, you all do so nice stuff). Cheers from Vienna.

      Or, being well short of where a jet should be touching down. Must be a somewhat short runway, because almost all of them are touching down at or prior to the 1000’ markers

    • @jackgribbin5247
      @jackgribbin5247 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Spyke0511 1 from what I could see they all landed past the zebra crossing looking lines which is what they should be doing

    • @Spyke-lz2hl
      @Spyke-lz2hl 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jack Gribbin In a jet, typically you’re shooting for the touchdown aiming points which usually align with the glideslope. Ducking below is somewhat normal, but touching down 250-500 feet down the runway is somewhat unusual. Like I said, I think it must be a shortish runway, and in those conditions, being wet, they probably wanted to get it on as soon as possible.

    • @AviationUpclose
      @AviationUpclose 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Spyke-lz2hl yeah usually the main aiming point is the thick markers that are between a quarter and a third of the way down. Perhaps a wind induced sink rate caused the early touchdown

    • @Spyke-lz2hl
      @Spyke-lz2hl 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      AviationUpclose Usually pilots of aircraft of this level will not allow an increased sink to affect where they actually touch down. There are approach additives calculated in to give the maneuvering margin to allow the pilot to use the extra energy to prevent a sink from affecting their path. The touchdown zone is marked by the triple hashed lines at 500 ft, then the solid boxes, or aiming points 1000 ft down, then another set of triple hashes 1500 ft, then double hashes, then single hashes ending at 3000 ft down the runway on a runway over a certain length (can’t remember) with a precision approach. Nice chatting with you, I’m sure I’ll see you again on another video. If there’s anything else you’d like to discuss let me know!! You may already know all this... 🤷‍♂️
