    Hebron parent here!
We're getting way too caught up on scoring. The directors always talk about how live music is about connecting with the audience and the feeling you get enjoying it.
How the judges quantify the performance into numbers and how those numbers compare to other bands' numbers is VERY secondary to "How did you feel at the end of your show? Did you do everything you could to help the people standing next to you achieve their potential?"
Of course we'd love to win (who wouldn't?) But we came to do our best and put on a great show. And our last run was our best run, which is Mission Accomplished. The reactions of the fans are what we'll remember in 50 years, not the scores or rankings.
Did you enjoy it? Did it inspire you, make you feel something? That's a win.

My band was supposed to stay and watch Hebron preform at Region since they're in our region but we couldn't this year due to homecoming that same evening, we got to watch Odesssey FM in person and it was amazing for it being earlier on in the season. Im always surprised at how fast these big 6A schools clean their intricate shows! congrats on a great season!

Glad you enjoy them! Of course we'd love to win first place every time (who wouldn't?) but our directors emphasize that winning is secondary to connecting with the audience; making them feel something. The scores are just a way to earn another chance to perform, to connect with another audience. If you felt something and if you remember that feeling then that's a win... regardless of how the judges quantified the technicalities of our performance and ranked them against the technicalities of others' performances.
In 50 years none of these students will remember who ranked in which places and who got which captions, but they'll all remember that feeling as they finished a performance and heard the roar of the crowd in appreciation. They'll remember how hard they worked with their fellow bandmates to achieve something magical together. They'll remember how much they miss it when it was over.
So I'm glad you remember those ballads. That means they connected with you. And that's a win for any live performer.

@@DisabusingTheLeft You may be correct but I don’t look to BOA adjudication sheets as absolute. They are just another judging philosophy. GE visual and GE designer production account for 45 percent of overall BOA score. It’s irrelevant, antiquated and needs reform.
I just watch Nats to see the difference and beauty of the country overall. #1 at Nats has hardly been the best program in the country for a long time now. I still love the pageantry of Lucas!

    • @DisabusingTheLeft
      @DisabusingTheLeft 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

@@johnnychikko3800 I hear ya. My pet peav with Grant Nats and competitive marching in general is the subjective judging. But I accept it for what it is. It is extremely difficult to judge one show from the next, and the methodology for assigning scores is kinda crazy. It requires the judges to have some familiarity with the bands ahead of time in order to even have a chance of getting it right. I have seen MANY bands over the years where I thought, "Oh they should make semis for sure" only to never see them advance.
I marched MANY years ago, and I don't have kids marching anymore, but I still take days off for Grand Nats to watch the livestream for 3 days. I see the good, the bad and the AWESOME!!! I have trained myself to look for what I believe the judges are looking to reward, and have gotten to where I can predict accurately about 85-90% of the time. But I still don't like the methodology.
Hebron has an AMAZING program from what I have seen over the years. They are in a different galaxy, and yet, they seem to not get their just recognition. But it is what it is. I still get to just enjoy watching without having to console kids afterwards or tell them scoring doesn't matter at a competitive event. 😄

Knowing the boa judging system I get the placement so much more. But I think it draws attention to the fact that the caption weighting in BOA is way off, 20 music 20 visual 60 GE. It just doesn’t allow for extreme music or drill to be rewarded on its own

These indiana bands are not in the same stratosphere as texas bands. Avon could not remotely play this music.
The reason that texas bands are so good is the way that they teach music and have studio classes for every instrument. Texas bands are at an inherent advantage that simply being a large school (like avon or carmel) cannot overcome.
That being said all of these indiana bands do not have any advantages in drill/music that texas bands could not overcome.
I have zero bias as I went to school in tennessee. It's clear. If you look up concert band recordings from the high schools, the ones in indiana sound like top quality high school bands. The ones in texas sound like professionals. Even their middle school bands in texas are shocking@@thereallore1268

Hebron had wonderful music but their visuals hurt them. People need to also recognize that although hebrons music is phenomenal, Carmel had deceptively hard music, and Avons wasn't too far behind. There is so much more to music than what Hebron does and other bands happen to do it but it's not appreciated nearly as much as it should be. So while Hebron is ahead in music, people exaggerate just how much, and don't even realize the gap caused in visuals.

I am happy to congratulate Avon & Carmel for taking #1 and #2 at Grand Nats. Unlike others, I'll also say it was well deserved. But I'm gonna call BS on any notion that any of TX's top 8-10 bands couldn't go anywhere else and finish consistently in the top 3...and in many cases win. (Case in point, in 2019, Vandy finished top of Grand Nat prelims, semi-finals and Finals. And, I'll admit that Reagan might have even had a stronger show that year...so it MIGHT have been Vandy, Reagan and Hebron in top 5 spots had Reagan made the Indy trip. Also, this year Westwood, who didn't even make SA finals, went to St. Louis Regional and took 3rd ahead of Bentonville, a Grand Nat finalist.) And, the same set of judges go across the country and judge these BOA events. So, with a common judging pool, your claim of inflation in TX is just pure BS.

Congrats, Hebron. You had a very good year, including a well-deserved 3rd place finish at UIL for consistency. It would have been great to have had a couple of Leander ISD bands at Grand Nats. Perhaps that would have given TX an even better chance at dislodging the eagle from those IN schools. Better yet, wouldn’t it be great to alternate Grand Nats locations? Indy one year and AT&T Stadium or Alamodome the alternating year? Until something like that happens, seems like San Antonio Super Regional will cast a bit of a shadow on Grand Nats given the top-to-bottom strength in its list of TX finalists.
