It's April but the temperature is well below zero and the snow has started to fall again.
It's normal we are in the high mountains among the peaks of the Alps at 2,042 m above sea level. (6700 ft.) !!
Saint-Véran is a picturesque French commune the highest in the list of the most beautiful villages in France nestled in the Hautes-Alpes department of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region, boasting a population of just 275 residents. Situated in the Queyras territory, it is renowned as the fourth highest inhabited place in Europe. Perched at an altitude of 2,042 meters, the village is affectionately dubbed "the village where the roosters peck at the stars," signifying its lofty status. Despite its remote location, Saint-Véran has preserved its traditional layout with distinct districts, each featuring its own bread oven, fountain, and mission crosses, paying homage to its history of evangelization. The architecture reflects the challenges of high-altitude living, with sturdy schist walls supporting structures like the "fuste," a canopy of larch trunks used for sheltering fodder and the "caset," a smaller stone-built space accommodating both families and livestock.
