Sit ups are counted as a full rep, starting at the bottom so you need to go up and down for a rep. Fingers need to be interlocked behind the head. You can rest at the top of a sit up. If you are going to fail just fling unlock your fingers and fling yourself to the rest position (won't count as a rep, but won't fail you). Well, four months later, two months prior to next PT TEST, I bought a jump rope. I jumped rope for 15 minutes a day, everyday, until the next PT Test. I did not do any push ups or sit ups during this 6 month time frame after the failed PT Test either; I just jumped rope. Now here's the climax of the story. I not only passed the next PT Test, but I maxed the run, 100%, and improved on my push ups and sit ups and I didn't do any of them. Remember, I just jumped rope. Speaking as a Drill Sergeant in the U.S. Army Reserves, I find it interesting when super-fit people attempt the APFT (Army Physical Fitness Test). Some points: On Mike's first few push-up reps, I would not have counted them because he did not go all the way up. Not only do you need to go down far enough to have the back of your arms parallel to the ground, you need to go all the way up so your arms are strait. On Matt, I would have terminated your sit-ups a long time ago. You were resting in the down position. The only way you can rest is in the up position but you cannot use anything to hold yourself in the up position. Several times you rested in the down position. I would have given you 1 warning if you were a trainee taking your APFT, but on the second rest I would terminate the event for you. Lastly, you cheated against Mike. You need to have a minimum of 10 min between events, but you had him run by himself which gave you a longer rest period. You both should have run at the same time to get an accurate score against each other. I would like to see how you two do on the ACFT (Army Combat Fitness Test) which is 6 events and 600 points. 3-rep maximum dead-lift, power throw, release push-up, leg tuck, sprint-drag-carry, two-mile run. www.army.mil/acft/ If you are ever in the Los Angeles area I know of a few company of Drill Sergeants (even a few are gym-rats) that would be willing to help you out ;-)

I have no doubt that he could out lift me in a gym environment, but he was one of my slowest soldiers in a tactical environment. I'm 215 pounds at 6"1 and I run about 10 to 20 miles depending on how i feel that day. The calisthenics and sit up parts are extremely easy and I primarily focus on power lifting. I don't agree with some of what you say. The muscular person should be I question some of us have crazy genetics and can so both at high levels that's gym strength for lifting and performing strength for the marines. Just have to become a hybrid type of trainer and train in all styles.
At the same time, I have heard that the runner type is not ideal for soldiering. There was historically a very old school focus on running, but it was concluded to be outdated type of training. Now they are going more and more towards a "crossfit" type of body.
I tried the FBI fitness test years ago, and they can be surprisingly difficult when you're not used to bodyweight training and running! Great job, it was fun to watch 👍
As a bodybuilder that's in the US Army I'd say you guys did a great job with no prep. The Army pt test is pretty much a joke for gauging a soldier's overall physical fitness, it's really just an endurance challenge where the little guys excel.
@@KKruel lmao easy killer, I wasn't trying to knock anyone all I'm saying is the APFT is strictly an endurance test there's no real strength involved. All the guys maxing the run in my unit are skinny, there's a reason they are changing the PT test to incorporate weights.
As a little guy, completely agree. Usually have no problem maxing the test, will back you up that it is a joke for someone’s physical fitness assessment. Though I will say, size doesn’t always equal strength. Can be tiny af but still throw up the same weights as some bigger guys
I’m 5’4” man, I usually have no problems hitting a sub 13 2 mile when taking the test. And from what I’ve seen in my experience thus far, shorter guys usually do far better than the bigger/taller peeps
@@aMusicGamer Because you are doing less work. It's physics and science. The definition of work is work = force times distance. Since you have a lot less weight to move which is the force, the work you are doing over a fixed distance is much lower than someone who is heavier than you. I have short stocky friends who can out lift me in the gym all damn day. However, their arms and legs are much shorter than mine and they also weigh less. If we adjusted the equation for distance (that is arm or leg length), they would probably need to lift 20% heavier than me to be performing the same amount of work. In other words, my range of motion is larger than there's so I am moving the weights a longer distance.
When I have been in army, I had push up around 55-60, and seat-up around 80, I can't remember how fast did I run. But we did it in uniform and army boots.
I haven't heard of anywhere doing in a PT test in fatigues. You have a PT uniform. Must have been way back. I was in 14-years ago. I rocked my PT patch from Basic all the way to leaving.

Hopefully you institute the sit up regiment in with your workouts as that is a good way to improve on them. Cheers...
This was actually pretty entertaining to watch and I have graded a lot of PT test in the army. I'm impressed that they were able to do this with no prep when a lot of our soldier who do this everyday can barely pass.
This was fun to watch. Great work! Small mention: The rest position for sit-ups is actually at the top. You would end your run if your shoulder blades touched the ground.
@@MattDoesFitness Pshh, IDC at all. Still very entertaining to watch. You guys train for something very different than a PT test. Glad to see how far your channel has come. Been watching for years. Even made my wife watch your old banana intros. LOL She knows you as the banana guy.
That's because the APFT measures endurance, not strength. These guys are strong and have a lot of muscle, which lowers their overall stamina. I would rather be in these guys shape than in Army shape.
If you can't do 2 minutes of push-ups 2 minutes of sit-ups and 2 mile run and hit the bare minimum. You should rethink your fitness. When my Granny was 97 she did PT better then me. 11B all day.
That’s dumb to say. Some people train for explosiveness instead of endurance. For example I can run one lap in 48 seconds, have a 40 inch vertical, and an 6 percent body fat. But my mile time is 7 minutes and I doubt I could run two miles without resting.
@@christopheralston370 or you could for functional fitness as opposed to just having that look for no reason...I'm 200 lbs with a beer belly and bum knee and I can still make the run sounds like little heart syndrome to me
As a US Army vet (living in England), you guys did a great job. Note: on the sit-ups, you are not allowed to rest on the ground - as soon as you do, you have to stop. You can only rest in the up position. Also, headphones are not allowed on the run portion, as it gives a tempo and motivating advantage. Other than that, you followed the test really well. At 39 years old (my last test) I did 65 pushups, 82 situps, and a 13:10 run - but that is practicing the test just about every other week...and running a f*ton. For having no acclimation, you guys killed it.
As a current member of the Army National guard, i still have issues maxing my events. My score was 56 push ups, 79 sit ups and 14:50 run. and just for a heads up , if you rest on the ground to catch your breath on the sit ups , you will normally get terminated.
Aye! I just graduated basic training. I scored 339 on my last PT test (went to the extended scale) 103 push ups 79 sit ups and ran a 10:56 2 mile. By far my favorite video yet man! Next, try the army Combat Fitness Test. Which will take the Army physical fitness test in 2020.
Bobby Brady - True, true. I was never a runner. I would bang out my push ups and sit ups then do just well enough on the run to keep an overall excellent or outstanding score.
Was his last name “Battle”. I swear to God, we had a 1Sgt Battle at AIT in Ft Rucker. We did a 5K formation “fun run” and he smoke every single one of us while smoking a cigar. BAMF for sure.
The sit-up part is meant to be a "sprint." You have to drop as fast as possible. Doing the exercise slowly will improve your strength but will cause fatigue sooner.
I've been in the Army for 13 years and I can usually max the test (my run has been slipping lately though). First off just wanted to say great job guys, don't listen to pissants on here who have never done a pushup but just talk shit. As some have mentioned you guys are incredibly strong but as you saw the Army tests are more geared towards endurance. Also I think you guys made the test a little bit harder for yourself by doing very full extensions and slow reps. Usually to max it you have to crank out as much as you can in a burst. You guys did much better form than most Soldiers. Y'all would easily get higher scores when you saw how normal soldiers take the test. I also would love to see you do the new Army ACFT, with several interesting events (and it has deadlifts which I'm sure you'd destroy). Cheers .

US Army Sergeant here, if you want the actual reference as to how to appropriately perform the US Army APFT look no further than FM 7-22 section A-18. This section will explain in great detail how to perform each event and each alternate aerobic event as well as include table to judge your age to performance grade in each event. Cool video but I think what would set it above and beyond would be to involve actual NCOs from the US Army to grade your events because as many have pointed out with the sit ups you would have been disqualified for resting on the ground as well as many of your push ups wouldn't have been graded because you didn't pause between rest and returning to the front leaning rest position. ;)
I'm 21 and not as fit as you guys but I still passed with a 300 and passed the ACFT with a 567 watching videos like this motivates me to aim for the 600 even though I may not look like a guy that does a super lot of bodybuilding 😂
As a member of the US Army I can attest that the passing standard is not 50%, it is 60% and per age bracket. But now the army is revising it's APFT (Army physical fitness test) making even more difficult to pass it.
Miel Parlant Ya thats the differences between the 2. One needs to optimize their physical abilities while the other is really just after aesthetics. Not saying goin after aesthetics is bad tho. Its just what people want to do
there's no such thing as having more muscle endurance wtf ahah. If they just trained push ups and sit ups then yes they'd do more. but they don't do them at all in their program, that's why they could've done better.
Man this is how I feel. I’m gonna struggle with mine, but I’m strong. It’s the endurance that kills muscle because your body consumes more energy to work.

The way I see it is you need athletes. People who are strong but can go on forever.
Wow. How nicely put! Thanks! :)
At the same time, I have heard that the runner type is not ideal for soldiering.
There was historically a very old school focus on running, but it was concluded to be outdated type of training.
Now they are going more and more towards a "crossfit" type of body.
As an active duty Marine, I highly advise the CFT! Strength isn’t such a big part of it vs muscle endurance 100%
Finally a video that doesn’t start with I ate nothing but !!

The guy in the background at 5:45 literally would out run me and he look 60 and I’m 25
That comment made me laugh in a different way 💔
the old guy is practicing so he can run from death
😂
PFFT I CANT-
As a bodybuilder that's in the US Army I'd say you guys did a great job with no prep.
Been saying that for years man. Oh look at me I got a 300, yeah cool shit, you’re also 150lbs.
keep doing these type of videos they are actually sickkkkkkk
Glad to hear it bro

I’m always impressed by these kind of people who can run for miles non stop. “aerodynamically” it doesn’t make sense!
@@Agent.K. It's about mitochondia and VO2 limits. Also muscle memory works for endurance as well as for strength

There doing it for fun so I don't think they even know all the rules
Lmao
Awkwaaaard
They not soldiers..chill out
it blows my mind how two civilians can so perfectly capture every emotion experienced during a pt test, to include the calf lock up at the end.
@@urmaker you get your ass kicked for wearing that shit nowadays. Army pt is a fucking joke. Nothing to brag about
@@urmaker I don't now how you say in English, before we need to serve in army for 6-8 months, it wasn't professional army, but now Goverment has revoke this kind of serving the military. Very impressive mate
@@MattDoesFitness Thanks, now I can't do this, not even close, then I have been 22-23 years old, and in training, I had 190cm, and 82 kg, so I could run like dog. Now I have 37 years and 102 kg, and think that I would die if I try come close to numbers from before :D

Try the new ACFT (Army Combat Fitness Test) better suited for lifters.
Hidden Door i was about to say the samething im in the army and they will prolly like it better, my 2 mile is 12 min, 98 push ups, 77 sit ups, my hip flexers suck ass with sit ups 😂
@@Inflikzthat's crazy good scoring for you. Same here I am able to get max on all of the events, and have been since 1998. Sadly my 2 mile times have dropped now I can only get a 11:25. I used to run 9:30 2 miles. The sit ups are great for the core strength for the form for the run as well. Hopefully you institute the sit up regiment in with your workouts as that is a good way to improve on them. Cheers...
Hidden Door straight Cappin 😂😂😂
This was actually pretty entertaining to watch and I have graded a lot of PT test in the army. I'm impressed that they were able to do this with no prep when a lot of our soldier who do this everyday can barely pass.
8:01 the camera guy realised he had made a terrible position mistake
Hahaha he moved himself away of hes @ s s
Yup hahaha
Hahahaha!
This was fun to watch. Great work!
Small mention: The rest position for sit-ups is actually at the top. You would end your run if your shoulder blades touched the ground.

I don't look anything like those guys as far as physique and I smoked the shit out of the PT test
They are running basic training standard. I do believe.
That's because the APFT measures endurance, not strength. These guys are strong and have a lot of muscle, which lowers their overall stamina. I would rather be in these guys shape than in Army shape.
if I had a physique like that I wouldn't wear a shirt anywhere

If you can't do 2 minutes of push-ups 2 minutes of sit-ups and 2 mile run and hit the bare minimum. You should rethink your fitness. When my Granny was 97 she did PT better then me. 11B all day.
That’s dumb to say. Some people train for explosiveness instead of endurance. For example I can run one lap in 48 seconds, have a 40 inch vertical, and an 6 percent body fat. But my mile time is 7 minutes and I doubt I could run two miles without resting.
If people did real pushups and situps on the apft yall defenitly wouldnt pass thats why they changing it

Thank you!
Diddo 👍 Music is pretty sick!
You need to try it again with the new test. It adds the spirnt drag carry, overhead toss and deadlift
the acft is easier than the apft!
Yea, looks pretty cool actually
As a US Army vet (living in England), you guys did a great job. Note: on the sit-ups, you are not allowed to rest on the ground - as soon as you do, you have to stop. You can only rest in the up position. Also, headphones are not allowed on the run portion, as it gives a tempo and motivating advantage. Other than that, you followed the test really well. At 39 years old (my last test) I did 65 pushups, 82 situps, and a 13:10 run - but that is practicing the test just about every other week...and running a f*ton. For having no acclimation, you guys killed it.
You should do the new us army combat fitness test !
Will look into it
Next video: Halving my Calories (just an idea) xx 💖💖🌷🌷
Your buddy was working to hard on the sit ups. After starting only your shoulder blades need to touch the ground.
As a current member of the Army National guard, i still have issues maxing my events. My score was 56 push ups, 79 sit ups and 14:50 run. and just for a heads up , if you rest on the ground to catch your breath on the sit ups , you will normally get terminated.
Yea, a few people have mentioned that mate, thanks for the heads up
I’m amazed at these guys and my abilities as a soldier at the same time.

That’s a super fast 2 mile!
I watched a my 1SG stop in the middle of a PT test run smoke a cigarette and still run a 14:25 two mile.
And he was probably at 70%
Damn
Wow...that’s still really fucking slow and not impressive at all
Bobby Brady - True, true.
I didn’t know Ross Barkley has a TH-cam channel
Hahaha!
The sit-up part is meant to be a "sprint." You have to drop as fast as possible. Doing the exercise slowly will improve your strength but will cause fatigue sooner.
Matt you gotta do the new US Army Combat Ready Test! It's replacing the current one, and is way more hardcore!!
Hooah!
Yo your a inspiration mate keep the good work up love your vids

Honestly i am not even ripped i got 60 PU 70 SU and my mile was 12:32 , i was drenched by the end of the 2mi

Cool video but I think what would set it above and beyond would be to involve actual NCOs from the US Army to grade your events because as many have pointed out with the sit ups you would have been disqualified for resting on the ground as well as many of your push ups wouldn't have been graded because you didn't pause between rest and returning to the front leaning rest position. ;)

there's no such thing as having more muscle endurance wtf ahah. If they just trained push ups and sit ups then yes they'd do more. but they don't do them at all in their program, that's why they could've done better.
