Im that Peach player but the real reason is I like to do float cancel aerial combos but I end up not being able to do anything outside of CC DSmash until I get momentum to be able to do the things I want. By that point my opponent has already seen me as a scrub.

It's cool that you made this video and that you're good at a load of other games. Slippi provided an opportunity to look at the labbing and analysis required for this game. And what's crazy is a lot of GM players are still totally capable of losing to many players ranked below them.
I think it just proves that the process to getting better ranks stops being about being the better player at higher levels. It's rare that a person will be able to raw in-game skill their way to higher ranks. There's got to me some out of game meta strats, unfortunately.

this video is so fucking good. Speed over quality is something I never thought about but it makes so much sense and seeing some of the plat destroyers made me feel a bit less bad at being hard stuck gold
16:33 I am a high silver/low gold falcon main and heard about this concept, on the best of days I’m playing plats and going “bro this falco is good but he just fsmashes at ledge no matter how many times I exploit it he WILL do it if I just wait” on the worst of days I’m losing my mind getting hit by peaches and marths standing in one place playing f-smash or blender simulator and dying at 30%. So basically, it works sorta but just screws me over more with SDs and dropped combos/edgeguards if I’m not on my A game, but then I have my moments like “holy crap I’m in the zone.” Best tip you gave me so far might actually be playing on an alt to always keep higher rank. That’s genius and I’ve made alts to mess around but never thought of it that way. Thank you

I think the most important thing for going from Master to GM is preparation and having comprehensive gameplans. Many Master players know a handful of things for most matchups, but they often have glaring weaknesses for certain characters or they rely too much on certain strengths because that's what they're comfortable with. E.g. Maybe you have a Fox who is really good at their kill confirms out of waveshine and uthrow, but this serves as a crutch and prevents them from needing to get good at building damage efficiently. They will start to play in a way where they don't care about optimizing low % because their mentality is "I just need to scrap until the opponent is kill %". These players will then feel like they have a really bad matchup when playing a character/opponent whose strengths include being resistant to kill confirms. Having a comprehensive gameplan doesn't always need to be super complex, but you do need to consider the breadth and depth of your knowledge vs. each character. You need the pattern recognition to identify the 20-30 most common scenarios and instantly respond in an optimal way, and you need to have enough structure to your gameplay that you aren't susceptible to less common strats (aka cheese). If you're serious about playing at a high level, it is literally more efficient to work a part time job once a week to pay for coaching than it is to spend that same time grinding on your own. For lower level players, coaching is much more about getting their holistic approach to the game calibrated so they aren't just flailing around aimlessly for years and years. For Masters, it's more about filling in gaps. A Master level player can often turn their worst matchup into one of their best over a single 1-hour session because they often just need help restructuring their approach to the matchup and/or identifying a few key, unforced errors they keep making. The issue is that without coaching, it can take dozens of hours of gameplay and analysis to figure out those issues on your own.
This is the first time I'm hearing about ladder anxiety. It's interesting. I would never have thought it was a thing. I played chess for years before I started playing melee, and it never occurred to me to try to preserve my rating or think about it dropping. My rating can swing in a 200 point range, but over the years it has trended steadily upward. I guess it makes sense that videogames would be different, because there is a whole status and self esteem element to the rankings. People mock silver or bronze rated players and feel bad about their skill level. You don't really see that in chess. To me, there is no inherent value in reaching a high rank. Your rank/rating is there to give you an idea of what your skill level is compared to other players. If you are using methods to artificially obtain a higher rating by only facing opponents you know you can beat or only using your lowest rated account to never lose rating, it's no longer giving you an accurate idea of your skill level. At that point, to me, it loses its only purpose. But I respect the idea that others have a different relationship to it.
This, I appreciate this comment. I was thinking that the whole video. Such a great vid, but ultimately I find the practice of multi-account farming weird. Ladder anxiety is the same as tournament anxiety. Play enough to deal with and learn about that emotion so you perform better. Also not everyone has like $30 to throw down on 6 ranked accounts monthly 😅
To be clear, having two accounts doesn't artificially inflate your rating because it doesn't prevent you from playing better players and you can only increase your elo by winning games. Having two accounts allows you to save your peak elo, but to increase your peak elo you have to earn it the same way everyone else does. You can look at your lowest elo as your current skill level and the highest one as your personal best.
@@serval_ssbm Can you do that multiple times a day? I just want my rank to be genuine work on a single account. I'm in a region with several grandmasters and they have never used multiple accounts, so I kinda want to be like that ya know? Maybe it's just me
@@Heisenbear not sure, i haven't checked the specifics on that since i also wanna use just one account lol. i'd bet that at worst you'd have to stick with one account for a month, which would give you a few attempts per season if you really wanted to switch accounts that badly. also, as someone that is trying to get as good in their first two years as cody schwab did in his (and is probably going to fail), i would advise against worrying about following the same path as other top players like that; basing your expectations for yourself on the experiences of other people, particularly a group of people that, depending on when you and the GMs in question started playing, might not have even learned the game in the same decade as you, will often leave you open to disappointing yourself. like, i don't think it's a stretch to say that the vast majority of GM and master rank players got most of their skill well before slippi ranked came out, so of course they won't bother with switching accounts to deal with ladder anxiety, because by the time the ladder came out, they'd already climbed it. tldr, don't write off a method of calming yourself down just cause some players that are good enough to destroy 98-99% of us with complete confidence don't need to use it lol
Great vid. I fucking died when you were talking about how many demons there are in Plat. It’s true, there’s so much undeveloped raw talent at that elo. Doesn’t surprise me when you say you hovered there for a bit then made a massive jump into GM. For me, the vid really put some things in perspective about my own game. Particularly the skills that I skipped while entering higher elo (to my detriment.) I’ve ended each season master ,but until recently, I’ve struggled breaking into GM. Even still it feels shaky. But after looking at your points I’ve realized that it’s definitely because of my lacking combo game and movement. I’ve always prioritized quality over speed, and as a result I’m fast in some situations and slow in others. My gameplay has stemmed from this, and though it’s matured to the point that it works (ig), I still can get overran by quick aggressive players. Also, the way I win my games are painfully unimpressive, which as a falco kind of sucks lol. I’d love to hear how people practice their combo game btw, I haven’t really been getting much mileage out of just Uncle Punch recently, and I feel like I’m mostly short on ideas and inspiration Okay, done yapping. I lab my combos using the unclepunch training thing for weird stuff I wanna make save states for or things that start off of weird interactions I wanna set up. For techchasing and killing off of grab/knockdown at 50% ish I use the combo training option which resets automatically when the bot dies or becomes actionable. If you're just starting to implement speed over quality and you're already in master you'll find some big benefits. I remember that it helped me prevent getting run over by really fast players by making the game just feel slightly slower in real time
Excellent video! Thanks for sharing! This gives me hope to escape Silver 2...! I started playing competitive Melee in 2021, maining Fox. I've taken several breaks through the years, and I always come back a little more competent. My techskill has improved, my understanding of the game has improved. . . when I'm on, I feel so good, do some cracked stuff, and completely dominate my opponent. When I learned how to SHFFL Dair/Nair into Shine or grab consistently... the game felt so good. But my W/L is almost always stuck around 50/50. I know I still have a lot to learn about neutral interactions and combo extensions... but I suspect a big part of my failure to rank up is mindset. I don't always go into a match with a burning desire to win. I think about the game too casually, as if I'm playing with friends for fun. Another interesting thing I've noticed, that I don't know what to think of. . . When I'm facing a player who is clearly better than me, I try really hard to hold my own and can often times win the set as a result. When I'm facing a player who is clearly less practiced than me, I'll do stupid things like let them back to the stage for free or go for suboptimal setups, or for unnecessary, unpracticed style ...effectively treating it like a practice session. Consequently I often lose those games. Just thinking 'out loud.' Hoping to hit Gold this year, and I'm pretty sure I can do it if I keep my eyes on the prize.

TH-cam recommended brought me here, love the info on slippi ranked, been off and on learning the game since i got into it in 2018 and gave ranked a small chance when it released with not a whole lot of progression (now that its free im sure ill have a much better time finding people around my skill level), having an alt seems like a great idea if i do want to give it a try again, the ranked jitters are to real.
Lol I picked up this game again about three weeks ago and I am pretty sure I can cruise through bronze right now, although I don't feel like even trying until I have all my tech 100% down from unclepunch training and fighting bots for practice.
Honestly just gonna use this as a space to vent, cause i like melee but the people make it so hard to like it sometimes. Like going to IRL tournaments just reminds you half these people are super weird and antisocial without a lot of life experience outside of video games. I feel like i wanna do stuff besides just talk about games or computers with them and it feels impossible. I just have a lot of hobbies not involving electronics necessarily like music, cars, martial arts, and it just hurts showing up to these places and have no one take an interest in who you are and what you care about besides what you can offer them. Just a bummer cause the game is so good but people will really beat you in tourney irl and not talk to you, and if you see them around later and say hi they will ignore you lol thats what has me bothered. Its one thing to win, its another to be lame, but to win be lame and then be rude as fuck in person, its just like... C'mon man.... Some of these people just play slippi IRL and forget you're a real person i swear. So many big ego PR people in the scene really treat every situation like it's life or death I HAVE TO WIN. Like im sitting next to you and its fucking awkward dude, i wanna win, but if youre gonna camp the ledge, you can just win man. Im not doing this with my free time. I'll just get better in my own house. Its just fucking weird.
I'm totally that technical with no neutral or punish -- I play against bots just about every single day because I like moving around, I load it up during every meeting like my version of a fidget spinner, and then I play against humans maybe once a year max. The things I can and can't do are based 100% on whether I think they're fun or not, so for example my T drops on FoD are getting pretty good and I can do the super low reverse double laser from the ledge but I can't short hop double laser at all..

my locals have always started at diamond or something. I remember wishing I could get anther’s ladder to practice, and I still don’t have slippi but now I can sorta keep up with them, even getting a couple set wins every few locals if i dont get a sheik or god fox
Just skimmed for now but lots of really interesting stuff here. Was stuck at diamond 1 for two seasons and just now i finally hit diamond 3. A lot of the points you made were things i could relate to. Going to try to follow your tips and hopefully i can hit master or GM in a future season!
@@sbtristopherI think he pretty much covered it tbh. It's hard because plat/diamond is when people really start learning mix-ups. It took me some vod reviewing and thinking about specific situations to end the plateau. I also bought an hour of coaching from Ginger and he exposed a huge weakness in my game. So it's a lot of things combined. I still don't think I'm good, sometimes I'll randomly get run over by a fox because of my bad habits. Like many say, progress isn't linear. Just have to tackle individual problems with your game plan one at a time
You can get to mid to high Plat with little to no practice just playing the game and understanding MUs, I think to make it into Diamond is the real step to becoming “pro ranked” because at that point I feel like you actively have to be practicing the game (not just playing) and actively looking for ways to improve. Basically Diamond and up means Melee becomes your life IMO.
Worst part of being in bronze is that you’re constantly playing against silver and even gold players because there aren’t enough bronze people to play against
Real, free ranked days a bit better after like 4:00pm I've realized, but it still happens, more new players need to hop on the grind. Seeing sangC in this vid is cool though, I've ran into that guy many times.

ive been stuck in bronze forever and i honestly dont know why. like i have good combo game and everything. i have everything up to "how to get out of silver" down (i dont need to hear "just do it more" ive been playing high bronze for like 3 years) and i just can't escape.
As someone who's played for a long time and still only gold on a good day. Your combo game is probably not as good as you think. For now, stop trying to combo and focus on doing damage without taking any. You want a high percent of net positive interactions
In bronze you can literally just grind movement and tech skill to get silver. At some point you're just fast enough and bronze players can't keep up at all. That or what the other guy said and work on punish game.
I'd say probably work on moving faster like he said or work on recovery and picking safe options in neutral if you already control your character well. For recovery there's a great video on sweet spots called something like 'even pro players do this wrong'. Your opponents will destroy themselves if you just stay on stage and do something resembling edge guarding. Maybe recognizing bad habits (from your opponent and yourself) like constant double jumping out of combos or constant full speed approaches with no patience.
I would definitely do a 1.5 hour coaching sesh with vod review, unclepunch drills, tech skill, and games or anything else for like $25. Definitely join the ganon rnd discord too there are a ton of top ganons who are always helpful
I have a question about laddering on multiple accounts. I’m newer to slippi to prefix, do you need to pay for ranked again on another account or do you get it for as many as you want from the one sub?
smurfs get paired differently in bronze because there is a hidden "trust" based rating as well.. So you weren't playing real bronze players, more than likely
I'd say yeah if you're playing a low tier then labbing specific stuff as early as silver makes sense. On ganon for example things like chain grab for sheik and specific platform movement that would probably be considered "advanced" are really important vs fast characters. Yoshi would need some knowledge of armour and parry and stuff. I wish I knew more about specific characters but you could definitely google "ssbm pikachu discord" and find a ton of resources. I've met some really cool people in the ganon discord
29:26 ehhh ICs kinda lose to marth even on FD. A good marth is gonna spam spaced fairs and juggle you to kingdom come. The moment you lose nana its a wrap marth just bullies sopo free =( its a specifc way that marth can play where ICs just have a nightmare of a time interacting with him. Yeah maybe gold and down that strat can work, but GOOD Marths know how to fence the shit out of characters who cannot play the footsies game very well and ICs unfortunately fall in that category.
They might lose. But very few marths actually play the matchups well. Even as you get to GM (unless they have a strong local ICs). And it's not that easy to "switch" into anti ICs mode on your counterpick after losing the first game to fox
@@SkaugTV yeah kinda most marths are on spacie mode but marth can treat ICs kinda like luigi so its not like they have to necessarily know ICs specifically, more like just anti-floaty mode, but your point is still valid which is why Foxes do try to pull that in hopes that it works cuz it has. I lab my combos using the unclepunch training thing for weird stuff I wanna make save states for or things that start off of weird interactions I wanna set up. For techchasing and killing off of grab/knockdown at 50% ish I use the combo training option which resets automatically when the bot dies or becomes actionable. If you're just starting to implement speed over quality and you're already in master you'll find some big benefits. I remember that it helped me prevent getting run over by really fast players by making the game just feel slightly slower in real time

I started playing competitive Melee in 2021, maining Fox. I've taken several breaks through the years, and I always come back a little more competent. My techskill has improved, my understanding of the game has improved. . . when I'm on, I feel so good, do some cracked stuff, and completely dominate my opponent. When I learned how to SHFFL Dair/Nair into Shine or grab consistently... the game felt so good.
But my W/L is almost always stuck around 50/50. I know I still have a lot to learn about neutral interactions and combo extensions... but I suspect a big part of my failure to rank up is mindset. I don't always go into a match with a burning desire to win. I think about the game too casually, as if I'm playing with friends for fun.
Another interesting thing I've noticed, that I don't know what to think of. . . When I'm facing a player who is clearly better than me, I try really hard to hold my own and can often times win the set as a result. When I'm facing a player who is clearly less practiced than me, I'll do stupid things like let them back to the stage for free or go for suboptimal setups, or for unnecessary, unpracticed style ...effectively treating it like a practice session. Consequently I often lose those games.
Just thinking 'out loud.' Hoping to hit Gold this year, and I'm pretty sure I can do it if I keep my eyes on the prize.

TH-cam recommended brought me here, love the info on slippi ranked, been off and on learning the game since i got into it in 2018 and gave ranked a small chance when it released with not a whole lot of progression (now that its free im sure ill have a much better time finding people around my skill level), having an alt seems like a great idea if i do want to give it a try again, the ranked jitters are to real.

Lol I picked up this game again about three weeks ago and I am pretty sure I can cruise through bronze right now, although I don't feel like even trying until I have all my tech 100% down from unclepunch training and fighting bots for practice.
Honestly just gonna use this as a space to vent, cause i like melee but the people make it so hard to like it sometimes. Like going to IRL tournaments just reminds you half these people are super weird and antisocial without a lot of life experience outside of video games. I feel like i wanna do stuff besides just talk about games or computers with them and it feels impossible. I just have a lot of hobbies not involving electronics necessarily like music, cars, martial arts, and it just hurts showing up to these places and have no one take an interest in who you are and what you care about besides what you can offer them. Just a bummer cause the game is so good but people will really beat you in tourney irl and not talk to you, and if you see them around later and say hi they will ignore you lol thats what has me bothered. Its one thing to win, its another to be lame, but to win be lame and then be rude as fuck in person, its just like... C'mon man.... Some of these people just play slippi IRL and forget you're a real person i swear. So many big ego PR people in the scene really treat every situation like it's life or death I HAVE TO WIN. Like im sitting next to you and its fucking awkward dude, i wanna win, but if youre gonna camp the ledge, you can just win man. Im not doing this with my free time. I'll just get better in my own house. Its just fucking weird.

I'm totally that technical with no neutral or punish -- I play against bots just about every single day because I like moving around, I load it up during every meeting like my version of a fidget spinner, and then I play against humans maybe once a year max. The things I can and can't do are based 100% on whether I think they're fun or not, so for example my T drops on FoD are getting pretty good and I can do the super low reverse double laser from the ledge but I can't short hop double laser at all..

my locals have always started at diamond or something. I remember wishing I could get anther’s ladder to practice, and I still don’t have slippi but now I can sorta keep up with them, even getting a couple set wins every few locals if i dont get a sheik or god fox
Just skimmed for now but lots of really interesting stuff here. Was stuck at diamond 1 for two seasons and just now i finally hit diamond 3. A lot of the points you made were things i could relate to. Going to try to follow your tips and hopefully i can hit master or GM in a future season!

@@sbtristopherI think he pretty much covered it tbh. It's hard because plat/diamond is when people really start learning mix-ups. It took me some vod reviewing and thinking about specific situations to end the plateau. I also bought an hour of coaching from Ginger and he exposed a huge weakness in my game.
So it's a lot of things combined. I still don't think I'm good, sometimes I'll randomly get run over by a fox because of my bad habits. Like many say, progress isn't linear. Just have to tackle individual problems with your game plan one at a time

You can get to mid to high Plat with little to no practice just playing the game and understanding MUs, I think to make it into Diamond is the real step to becoming “pro ranked” because at that point I feel like you actively have to be practicing the game (not just playing) and actively looking for ways to improve. Basically Diamond and up means Melee becomes your life IMO.

ive been stuck in bronze forever and i honestly dont know why. like i have good combo game and everything. i have everything up to "how to get out of silver" down (i dont need to hear "just do it more" ive been playing high bronze for like 3 years) and i just can't escape.
As someone who's played for a long time and still only gold on a good day. Your combo game is probably not as good as you think. For now, stop trying to combo and focus on doing damage without taking any. You want a high percent of net positive interactions

In bronze you can literally just grind movement and tech skill to get silver. At some point you're just fast enough and bronze players can't keep up at all.
That or what the other guy said and work on punish game.
I'd say probably work on moving faster like he said or work on recovery and picking safe options in neutral if you already control your character well. For recovery there's a great video on sweet spots called something like 'even pro players do this wrong'. Your opponents will destroy themselves if you just stay on stage and do something resembling edge guarding. Maybe recognizing bad habits (from your opponent and yourself) like constant double jumping out of combos or constant full speed approaches with no patience.
That recovery video is by pewpewu and called top players don't even do this right.

smurfs get paired differently in bronze because there is a hidden "trust" based rating as well.. So you weren't playing real bronze players, more than likely

I'd say yeah if you're playing a low tier then labbing specific stuff as early as silver makes sense. On ganon for example things like chain grab for sheik and specific platform movement that would probably be considered "advanced" are really important vs fast characters. Yoshi would need some knowledge of armour and parry and stuff. I wish I knew more about specific characters but you could definitely google "ssbm pikachu discord" and find a ton of resources. I've met some really cool people in the ganon discord

29:26 ehhh ICs kinda lose to marth even on FD. A good marth is gonna spam spaced fairs and juggle you to kingdom come. The moment you lose nana its a wrap marth just bullies sopo free =( its a specifc way that marth can play where ICs just have a nightmare of a time interacting with him. Yeah maybe gold and down that strat can work, but GOOD Marths know how to fence the shit out of characters who cannot play the footsies game very well and ICs unfortunately fall in that category.
They might lose. But very few marths actually play the matchups well. Even as you get to GM (unless they have a strong local ICs). And it's not that easy to "switch" into anti ICs mode on your counterpick after losing the first game to fox
@@SkaugTV yeah kinda most marths are on spacie mode but marth can treat ICs kinda like luigi so its not like they have to necessarily know ICs specifically, more like just anti-floaty mode, but your point is still valid which is why Foxes do try to pull that in hopes that it works cuz it has.
