    This is how people take criticism after working on the same thing for over a decade

  • @j.thorgard
    @j.thorgard 10 ปีที่แล้ว +14

    3:08 He asks for criticism and then throws it back in their face. It doesn't matter if it happens in reality, you've got to convey your art in a believable manor.

    • @AG-cl9nu
      @AG-cl9nu 10 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      If art must be conveyed in a believable manner, almost all pop musicians should be hung. The truth is believable to those who understand it, while the feeble minded await pageantry and distraction.

    • @baileypfr
      @baileypfr 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      A G Pop artists aren't selling realism.. And IDK about hanging people for making bad 'art' (if you choose to call pop music art.) I haven't seen the play myself yet so i can't say whether I agree or disagree with the guy in the audience questioning the play's realism, but I don't see how they expect to get any truthful feedback if they get all defensive about the first person who gives their input. That being said, I've been a long time NOFX fan and I wish Fat Mike and Soma all the best.

    • @j.thorgard
      @j.thorgard 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      A G It's all about target audience. For example if your target audience are 70 year war veterans then it doesn't matter if a 12 year old understands the message. But if you target audience are young adults (especially punks), then if young adult punks don't get it, you have failed. Choose: Message + Delivery + Audience = Good art. Bad choices equal bad art. It's that simple.

      John Thorgard I think what the guy with criticism in the video was trying to say was that the play didn't speak to his experiences living in a squat/on the street. Which, in 2015, is probably fair. But also, since most of the play was written from personal experiences of mike/wife living in squats in the late 80's, I would guess the experiences of each would differ greatly.

      Radu Valentin They were only in the video for like 30 seconds. I think it’s unfair to assume that they consider themselves from the streets.

      They are rich kid whose parents are probably bay area tech millionaires. It was annoying just because it wasn’t their “reality” and they acted like it wasn’t a reality or someone else’s reality. on a side note, it is interesting to hear about a punk rock millionaire having dinner with billionaires......

    • @kmm2442
      @kmm2442 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      No. They were just saying what they had lived. They obviously felt like they were the same people, and to imply they all were hookers, which is what the story was - that isn’t what they experienced. Just different experiences of punk and homelessness I suppose. And the fact they weren’t all hookers is a positive thing. Fat Mike should have been less defensive and understanding of that. He flipped and got defensive which is weird for someone who is meant to be understanding of the other side. I guess we all get defensive.

    • @raccoonpunk707
      @raccoonpunk707 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah it was a bit weird of him. But also the guy that said he lived on the streets... Most Punks i was introducet to (including my boyfriend) sex was a big curency. Maybe not as hardcore like they lived it. But definetly curency for a couch to sleep on, food, drugs and money.

    I am Mr. Radio growing up loving all the top rock and pop hits. I loved Disco, ACDC, Stones, Temple Pilots, Squeeze, Rush, Deep Purple but I never really listened to NOFX until the past few years when my wife and NOFX Superfan Leona turned me onto Fat Mike and the Boys! Now, I LOVE the band (not quite sure about the music still) but they are one kick ass class Fucking set of Dudes! For the record, there, I said it!

    You know how when a kid falls down, you don’t overreact because it only makes things worse? If a kid gets molested, I wonder if sometimes it’d be better to just tell them that a sick person did something gross to them, but it’s not a big deal, then just keep it moving (rather than having the entire family get all bent out of shape, put them into counseling, and have them see themselves as a victim for the rest of their lives).

    • @claate
      @claate 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree and also hate today's labels because labels prevent acceptance. People are people and some are quirkier than others. But labeling someone "abused" or "recovering" or "on the spectrum" just keeps them in a different bucket apart from the mainstream. When I was a kid the kids that today would be labeled "on the spectrum" were just the the weird fucking kids in class and those were the kids I usually hung out with because they were far more interesting than the jocks and cheerleaders and popular kids. Watching this play made me realize why I was drawn to punk rock growing up - while I wasn't abused and came from a good home, my parents disappointed me many times and weren't always there when I needed them emotionally. And one day I woke up and realized if I needed something I could do it myself with my family of choice. That's the message of this play.

  • @raduvalentin8648
    @raduvalentin8648 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Fat mike and snakeoil had the right to get angry at some unexperienced kids in the audience saying its not realistic because they are more sheltered than real street kids who know that there are way worse things going on all over America...prostitution, addiction, murder isn't as rare as you would think, I used to travel a lot and trainhop and met a lot of people that are dead now from various reasons. Those kids would be surprised how the real dark side of the streets are like, not mommy kicking you out for a night and than you going down the street to the tame squat house to brag toyour friends so you can go to mike's show and complain that you have been such a squatter with complete life experience that these dark things are not real because you have no seen them, there are plenty of people in this world with serious problems and if you are saying its not real than you are an ignorant idiot!

    I loved the show. I saw it on TH-cam. I thought Fat Mike did a great job. It's a shame it never made it to Broadway because I would have loved to see it live. The material is heavy but in the end it is about finding your family. Chosen family is just as important or can be more important than blood family sometimes. The music was catchy and I enjoyed it. Or potentially he could make a movie since I know his broadway dreams got stopped because of the pandemic. But I think it was fresh and different.

      That would be the most meta thing ever: going right back to the authentic discussions of the 1990s. How many crummy fanzines indulged in this ridiculous, redundant conversation? Eventually 'the scenes' were taken over by rich kids, major labels and stupid behavioural policing. Then people grew up and left, with each new generation watering it down to an unrecognisable new stew.

    The younger folks in the test audience disputing the idea and existence of street moms are the real deal poseurs. That's probably why they were the "punk-looking young people" even invited in the first place so they could say they went to Fat Mike's musical for some real deal cred. Wild. I've known street moms of sorts up in the Bay Area and LA, they're absolutely wonderful human beings, and definitely exist as they have existed for a long time per my knowledge lol. Basically, it was hipsters looking to criticize a punk rock anything because they're hipsters and wouldn't know that life if it belted them in the mouth.
