Being someone who has suffered with severe Agoraphobia for four years, I can tell you that the explanation is spot on. He's referring to what's commonly known as exposure therapy. However, Agoraphobics don't get anxiety from places or objects, it's actually a fear of fear itself: you fear having a panic attack in a place that's difficult to escape, and simple natural factors cantrigger the anxiety, such as brief dizzy spells, or as Peterson said, a few heart palpitations. Then it spirals out of control, which is why you need to be able to rationalise it and learn to breath properly. Agoraphobia goes hand-in-hand with a Panic Disorder, or should I say it manifests from the difficulties brought on by Panic Disorder. It draws parallels to PTSD in that way.
I've almost fully overcome my Agoraphobia now, and to those who have suffered with it for long periods of time, it's possible to overcome using only self-help therapy. You don't need medication (in fact, I'd highly recommend you stay away from medication as it only masks the problem rather than overcoming it, similar to using alcohol to dull the anxiety) and you don't need to see therapists. Read up a lot about the subject and you'll start to understand that it's not real. It's all a trick in your mind.

    • @ImGoingSSJ97
      @ImGoingSSJ97 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

True and simply knowing the fact of there being an exit available at any time reduces half of the anxiety even if it's a lie. Simply believing that you WILL be able to escape IN case panic attack occurs, reduces the response to fear. And the fact is that 99times/100 the exit is not going to be needed, it's just a phobia, an illusion that something bad will CERTAINLY going to happen when its very unlikely.. The method of JBP is on point because it hardwires the fact that there IS an exit and with repetition you really KNOW that and have it in the back of your mind all the time and it keeps the anxiety cut in half like a medication would. And as JBP said, you HAVE to EMPHASIZE that yes, you CAN stop this at any time, the control in your hand. This is the main point and the main thing my agoraphobic brain looked for relief - it's simply the KNOWING that I CAN stop this if I needed. That's why they're afraid of bus or plane, because if something happens they're trapped, its done and this thought is paralyzing and main driving force of agoraphobia. The simple belief that they can stop and escape at any second will eliminate anxiety enough to the point of where the "escape" card will never be actually needed.
As having had panic attacks and agoraphobia I gotta emphasize that too much exposure is going to be worse than none and too little is ineffective and simply kills hope because we agoraphobics are so bloody desperate for ANY improvement or relief, and every time the anxiety is the same level the amount of hope decreases. With optimal intensity of exposure you can FEEL the anxiety is improving week after week and during session you really emphasize that here and there you did things you were never able to. Now the patient will 100% dismiss it as if "so..?" its like they instantly dismissed the achievement and aimed for a higher goal without congratulating themselves. You have to MAKE them describe the things they are now able to do and the collateral positive things that came out of it. But even if it seems like they dont care, they do, you have to burn the fact into them and when its hardwired, there will be no need to walk the patient by the hand like a child

been agoraphobic for about 10 years now and still counting, i'm not directly afraid of dying from agoraphobia, that vanished pretty fast, i just dislike feeling ill.
i've done everything i can think of but the problem still exists. every time i try even if i go out daily, as soon as i leave my home it starts appearing even though i'm not exactly afraid or even thinking about it, i just feel a little uncomfortable to begin with but then it just grates on me continuously until i'm so exhausted that i am barely cognitive about what's happening around me that i need to go home and rest.
i mean i've taken the tram ride for about 20 minutes to my psychologist but still i had anxiety the whole way through, which was pretty much the same amount of anxiety levels i had just walking around outside my home for 10 minutes or even 2 hours, it's just a constant thing that never dissipates until i get home.
the things i've tried: progressive muscle relaxation techniques, breathing techniques, accepting the fear, ignoring the fear, extensive exposure, stress elimination. etc.
it kind of feels like my brain is being too stubborn to move on or something.
i feel like i should just give up on trying to beat it and just do whatever i can to just get by daily life at this point and be as happy as i can be and hope it magically dissappears on it's own, because i'm sure as hell can't figure it out why i'm not getting better.
anyways, congratulations on beating it, hope i will too someday.

Keep promises you made to yourself. honor yourself. Tell yourself when you're doing well. Care for others around you and it will be reflected back to you. Don't betray your subconscious. Your subconscious knows better than you. Failing is only one step towards learning it is not a bad thing. and some people have chemical imbalances that can be fixed with diet so don't forget that too.

The first sentence is spot on. You want confidence? Keep your promises to yourself. Even the small ones. You said you were going to the gym today? GO. Don't lie, even on small things. "oh I didn't had time" when you didn't feel like to? Say it. I didn't really want to do it. It's simple, but complex.

I suffered from panic attacks like 15 years ago, and I can relate to what Peterson is saying here. If you feel palpitations, and you feel dizzy and unstable, you panic like hell. And believe me, you will feel like you're about to die, so going to the ER is not an option. It is a very nasty awful thing to experience, and I wouldn't desire it to happen to anyone, even to your worst enemy. The funny thing is that when someone explains to you that it is all in your mind, and that by controlling your breathing and anxiety it goes away, it is a game changing day. I stopped having them like 10 days after that. All Peterson is saying here is dead on, my dad has anxiety and depression issues as well, so it must have a genetic origin as well. Great lecture!

He just stood and mumbled throughout the entire lectures and looked totally zoned out, almost as if he was talking to himself or something.
He was so damn boring that I actually stopped going to those lectures, and I learned all of the content in that course (like series, Laplace Transforms and linear system of differential equations, for example) from channels on TH-cam where the teachers actually enjoyed teaching stuff, like for example Professor Leonard, Michel Van Biezen and Khan Academy.
I can highly recommend all of those channels to anyone who studies any kind of math or science, they are awesome.

Some people dont realize but agoraphobia and anxiety disorders are really really bad, Sometimes I wish I could trade my anxiety for my legs or an arm. Or another more "treatable" illness. In my case the anxiety is triggered by heart palpitations that might occur every 2 or 3 days, or every 5 minutes for 6 or 7 hours a day... I dont know what is wrong with my body and neither have the resources or even a job to go to a specialist and have a proper check up. All I have is my family and faith, strenght and courage to go on. I will never give up and fight till I got no strenght or tears left.

So for awhile would avoid elevated platforms as much as possible. Then as my life became filled with many major stresses/ worries, I didn't even notice at first that my fear of elevated train platforms had disappeared, NO longer a fear of mine at all, without even trying, just happened, but took a lot of stressful chaotic events to get there, so wasn't easy either.

The gift of all his words on the web has granted your wish. I suffered from pts due to a massive trauma in my life , and so for years I bloody made sure my life was ...safer , lets say. This was part of dealing and reacting to trauma. Now...years later I have realised, thanks partly to Peterson, that I had thrown out the baby with the bath water and lost a part of myself. I am 54, female and have just got back from a sea kayaking introduction weekend in Anglesey , wales. It was bloody scary, fantastical , beautiful . I wanted to do something to take me out of my comfort zone. I am still buzzing from the whole experience. Dynamic therapy ...doing something that forces you beyond your fears exhilarates the body and mind. Also done first bit of self authoring. Take the first steps out of isolation and a path will become clearer to you . all the best Luna singer.x

Today I had plans to finish my work for college and it was going extremely well. I'm very good at executing my own plans. But then, the teacher said that in order to do it, I had to work with three classmates that I haven't even met. When I saw that I had to work in a group of four people, I started panicking (literally trembling) because I had to interact with people who might take advantage of me (like in every work in groups that I have participated before) and because my plans for doing this work alone were basically ruined and I now I have to rework on the plan from scratch. I don't know what exactly is wrong with me. But I'm sure that something is not right.

Do you just sit, listen and watch the video for two hours, with no breaks and no distractions? I know I don't (I listen to it, but for example draw while listening). It's not easy, especially when there's six hours of sitting and listening before that, no matter how captivating the subject is.

I have to mention that the most dramatic turnaround of hysteria I have ever witnessed (in my mother) occurred after the trans-dermal application of my ABC (Anti-Bruise Compound) patch material, with secretagogue formula. Some unknown level of stress is created by the prolonged deprivation of quality sleep (indicating a deficiency in the pituitary release of HGH.) This needs to be looked into. An alternative form of this, is a very low dose of melatonin alone for its priming effect during normal sleep - assuming other factors are good. The secretagogue works anytime. I am making a new batch as we speak for my regular use in a life boost later-life stage.

I believe that agoraphobics are more often women only because it becomes confusing to be faced with many double dilemmas like having the strength to get out of an ensuing familiar difficult situation while being maybe again being expected to later not look so strong at the same time just in case no one will believe you that you did have a good reason to fear and a need to defend yourself. The truth is there are people around who are on a which hunt for evil feminists. For example, what if you a woman got out of a choke hold that was making you pass out and then you got a kick to the head right after which landed you into the emergency ward before ever having agoraphobia only the next problem in emergency was bot being believed that you only a woman could survive an attack like that only 5 days after giving birth and only end up with a bit of redness inside your nose. What do you do next without feeling any anxiety and with enough calm to maybe have no choice but to go through the same thing again while trying to find better living conditions for you and your children without feeling overwhelming fear that you are going to be judged again and put into more not less impossible double dilemmas? Like when being told by someone beside you not to get into an elevator after the doors started to close by trying to signal the electric eye to re-open the door. Do you listen to him as an authority just because he is a man and give it a try anyway because it worked for you before or do you obey him? Well I did try anyway, the elevator door closed on my arm to start moving up to the next floor and as it turns out that stranger was the elevator mechanic too. As an assertive person who does not like to be martyred I did manage to stretch my ligaments in that arm while it was being crushed to get the fail safe mechanism inside the door to become unstuck. So at the time while that arm was only a slight hairline fracture which didn't need treatment after I had already left my first husband over 25 years prior I was just glad I didn't have to live with that stranger elevator mechanic instead when I remembered noticing a strange looking spring assembly that had been added on one upper corner of that door. For most women living in an urban environment in the western world with a lot of people who are still being affected by Disney cartoon witches as we grow older we enjoy being outdoors less and less and when it causes our blood pressure and heart rate to shoot up to unhealthy levels on a frequent basis around the few people you come across in a week who are immature witch hunters that is called agoraphobia.
