    LESSON SUMMARY
Most piano students spend time practicing scales, but is this time well spent? For example, what does a student gain from playing a traditional major scale exercise in parallel octaves? Perhaps not as much as you thought. In today's Quick Tip, 5 Major Scale Exercises to Practice Daily, Jonny May shares a different approach to this familiar topic in order to maximize the benefits for students.

I’ve been playing piano for over 25 years now, and I’ve been using your TH-cam videos for the past year. It has made one of the biggest impacts to my skill level and understanding of theory. I now feel comfortable doing more than just reading or memorizing sheet music. You’re an amazing teacher.

What you wrote is basically my experience. I have a career in the judiciary here in Brazil. So, I had to put my passion for music on the back burner. Learning on videos at any time with teachers is very important. theory and practice must go together. Learning jazz goes beyond just reading sheet music

I'm a piano beginner and i enjoy so much your lessons guys, i just love the way you teach the scales. Getting to master them on the piano is a double achievement already, first they sound like already songs and makes you want to play them because they just sound fun and beautiful , second they open your horizon on how to truly use them to play songs. Not to mention the music theory part in this lesson about all the names of the presented scales . Big Thank you.

Great video, thank you. I found Level 1 very difficult to master, not for the fingering, but putting the swung rhythm together with both hands. At times I thought my brain would explode, but after two 15 minute sessions and splitting it up into smaller sections it finally came together. I agree this is a more constructive approach to scales, as it includes 2-5-1 chord progression, split rhythm, and scales all together.
    Bravo !

Love this, as usual. Level two is similar to a course on PWJ that I've taken, and I have about 6 keys under my belt so far. Taking the lessons through all 12 keys will continue to be a great exercise. Question: do you have a different series of "most useful" patterns to insert in the 5th exercise (which does feel like Hanon). I suppose we could always write our own, but if you have already done such a teaching video that would be great to see!! 😃

Hi Jonny, this is one amazing tutorial!!! Can you do a video where you explain how to switch between different keys or using chords from other scales? I'm stuck sometimes as I know I need to change but don't know where to. Many thanks for your videos, these are beyond help, they are an inspiration!!!

Playing both hands together up and down, even with different rhythm or different scales, one ascending, one descending, does nothing to improve your musicality or ability to improvise. No wonder classically trained musicians spend so much time doing exactly that.
