My argument: i would appreciate it if you read my entire comment There's a very popular saying "you can't shout fire in a crowded building". Basically, if you shout 'fire!' in a crowded building which isn't on fire just for fun, you can kill a lot of people because most probably, a stampede will occur. This phrase doesn't say that you SHOULDN'T shout fire, but says that you CAN'T. This is used to signify that even freedom of speech has limits. These limits need to be set so that someone's freedom doesn't hurt others. There's no debate about if freedom of speech should have limits, it definitely should, but the debate is about where to put the limits. Here are a few arguments from both sides. If we put loose limits on freedom of speech, new ideas can flourish. There's definitely going to be extreme content(ex: maybe Nazi propaganda), but that extremism will be moderated by other people who will use their freedoms to disprove extremism. To which, a counter would be that when people can't handle critisism of their fav politician, they definitely won't watch a breakdown of an extreme idea that they believe in. This will create a group of people who are dug into their beliefs who refuse to listen to the other side of the argument and just watch content from their side. Echo chambers, I described echo chambers. To which a response could be echo chambers can be responsibly handled by closing them, but if regulations are tightened, the limits don't allow you to say anything anti establishment since the establishment is the one setting the limits. The last sentence has the argument being made in this video. To which, a response could be if echo chambers can just be 'responsibly handled by closing them', then who decides if something's an echo chamber or is it just group of people agreeing to a certain things? That again brings subjectivity, which is a power that can be abused by the one wielding it. These arguments go on and on, but my point is that there needs to be SOME regulation on free speech. What the current system does is, instead of creating the same limits for every type of speech, it usually determines stuff on a case-by-case basis. Which seems to be working so far. You may disagree, please do. But at least it makes a lot of stuff clear. For me if i want to discuss Tate's freedom of speech, i can discuss it while keeping others in isolation. Which is what I'll be doing now. No matter what this guy thinks, his most popular ideas, the ones that create the biggest splash are his mysogynistic ones. If you're someone as popular as him, you have a responsibility to basically not shout fire. A lot of people in Andrew's defence say that he's not a misogynist and a lot of his clips are taken out of context. But my question is, if he doesn't believe in those ideas, isn't it his responsibility to make it clear that he doesn't believe in it? He's clearly aware of the influence he has, and he should try his best to reduce that and he, is clearly not doing that. THIS is the reason he lost a part of his freedom of speech. Not because he did some Robin hood type shit. Would you not want restrictions on THIS guy's freedom of speech? Do you really think that someone shouldn't be allowed to shout fire in a crowded building, but that person should be allowed to heavily suggest that there's a fire without actually saying it, then observe the panic ensue, and do nothing to stop the panic that the person created in the first place without any consequences? Why did i write such a long comment almost unrelated to what fing's conclusion was in the video? Because of his closing arguments. That if Tate dies in mysterious circumstances in the coming days, that would be an attack on everyone's freedoms of speech. I'm sorry WHAT? You don't need to kill someone to take away their freedom of speech. This statement is problematic for 2 reasons 1. If Tate actually dies in a car accident, people will believe that the Matrix killed him. And we all know that people are much more sympathetic to ideas of dead guys. This will scarily convince many more people of Tate's ideas. Although this isn't a very big concern since this is very unlikely, but a youtuber of this size needs to be much more aware of the impact of their words. 2. The bigger problem is what this statement implies. It implies that curtailing his freedom of speech is an attack on everyone's freedoms of speech. But when you think about it, I just said that you don't need to kill him to take away his freedom of speech, doesn't that mean that good freedom of speech is already curtailed? Is this an attack on our freedom of speech? Lo and behold! We have reached the conclusion that we shouldn't punish the guy who's responsible for a lot of misogyny and doesn't do anything to rectify it. How did we get here? We assumed that the closing statement is true, that an attack on his freedom of speech is an attack on ours. That statement hides the fact that this guy effectively shouted fire in a crowded building and his rights were reduced for a reason. Please be more careful with your statements in the future. You also addressed the criminal side of him, I thought that you did it really well, but the freedom of speech argument felt misleading. There's no way anyone, let alone fing is reading this because this comment is way too long which makes it look like a hate comment, it's also way too long for everyone's attention span and it also doesn't help that my writing skills are terrible at best. My argument: i would appreciate it if you read my entire comment
There's a very popular saying "you can't shout fire in a crowded building". Basically, if you shout 'fire!' in a crowded building which isn't on fire just for fun, you can kill a lot of people because most probably, a stampede will occur. This phrase doesn't say that you SHOULDN'T shout fire, but says that you CAN'T. This is used to signify that even freedom of speech has limits. These limits need to be set so that someone's freedom doesn't hurt others. There's no debate about if freedom of speech should have limits, it definitely should, but the debate is about where to put the limits.
Here are a few arguments from both sides. If we put loose limits on freedom of speech, new ideas can flourish. There's definitely going to be extreme content(ex: maybe Nazi propaganda), but that extremism will be moderated by other people who will use their freedoms to disprove extremism. To which, a counter would be that when people can't handle critisism of their fav politician, they definitely won't watch a breakdown of an extreme idea that they believe in. This will create a group of people who are dug into their beliefs who refuse to listen to the other side of the argument and just watch content from their side. Echo chambers, I described echo chambers. To which a response could be echo chambers can be responsibly handled by closing them, but if regulations are tightened, the limits don't allow you to say anything anti establishment since the establishment is the one setting the limits. The last sentence has the argument being made in this video. To which, a response could be if echo chambers can just be 'responsibly handled by closing them', then who decides if something's an echo chamber or is it just group of people agreeing to a certain things? That again brings subjectivity, which is a power that can be abused by the one wielding it.
These arguments go on and on, but my point is that there needs to be SOME regulation on free speech. What the current system does is, instead of creating the same limits for every type of speech, it usually determines stuff on a case-by-case basis. Which seems to be working so far. You may disagree, please do. But at least it makes a lot of stuff clear. For me if i want to discuss Tate's freedom of speech, i can discuss it while keeping others in isolation. Which is what I'll be doing now.
No matter what this guy thinks, his most popular ideas, the ones that create the biggest splash are his mysogynistic ones. If you're someone as popular as him, you have a responsibility to basically not shout fire. A lot of people in Andrew's defence say that he's not a misogynist and a lot of his clips are taken out of context. But my question is, if he doesn't believe in those ideas, isn't it his responsibility to make it clear that he doesn't believe in it? He's clearly aware of the influence he has, and he should try his best to reduce that and he, is clearly not doing that. THIS is the reason he lost a part of his freedom of speech. Not because he did some Robin hood type shit. Would you not want restrictions on THIS guy's freedom of speech?
Do you really think that someone shouldn't be allowed to shout fire in a crowded building, but that person should be allowed to heavily suggest that there's a fire without actually saying it, then observe the panic ensue, and do nothing to stop the panic that the person created in the first place without any consequences?
Why did i write such a long comment almost unrelated to what fing's conclusion was in the video? Because of his closing arguments. That if Tate dies in mysterious circumstances in the coming days, that would be an attack on everyone's freedoms of speech. I'm sorry WHAT? You don't need to kill someone to take away their freedom of speech. This statement is problematic for 2 reasons
1. If Tate actually dies in a car accident, people will believe that the Matrix killed him. And we all know that people are much more sympathetic to ideas of dead guys. This will scarily convince many more people of Tate's ideas. Although this isn't a very big concern since this is very unlikely, but a youtuber of this size needs to be much more aware of the impact of their words.
2. The bigger problem is what this statement implies. It implies that curtailing his freedom of speech is an attack on everyone's freedoms of speech. But when you think about it, I just said that you don't need to kill him to take away his freedom of speech, doesn't that mean that good freedom of speech is already curtailed? Is this an attack on our freedom of speech?
Lo and behold! We have reached the conclusion that we shouldn't punish the guy who's responsible for a lot of misogyny and doesn't do anything to rectify it. How did we get here? We assumed that the closing statement is true, that an attack on his freedom of speech is an attack on ours. That statement hides the fact that this guy effectively shouted fire in a crowded building and his rights were reduced for a reason. Please be more careful with your statements in the future.
You also addressed the criminal side of him, I thought that you did it really well, but the freedom of speech argument felt misleading.
There's no way anyone, let alone fing is reading this because this comment is way too long which makes it look like a hate comment, it's also way too long for everyone's attention span and it also doesn't help that my writing skills are terrible at best. On top of that I'm posting this comment at 1:50 am and this is why I'm probably the only one reading it. If you're not me, then feedback would be appreciated and if not that, just reply.
