My favourite Vlad the Impaler story was one where a traveling merchant was robbed in Vlad's capital. The merchant begged the Impaler for help and Vlad agreed. The next morning, the goods, money and cart were returned to the merchant and those responsible were impaled nearby. The merchant went to thank Vlad, as well as complain because among his returned goods was a single coin MORE than what was stolen. Vlad was overjoyed to hear this, and told the merchant that HE had put the extra coin in the merchant's returned goods, and that if the merchant had not reported the extra coin, then Vlad would have had the merchant impaled alongside the thieves.

War Crimes? But Obama has a Nobel Peace Prize and then, with the help of the CIA and the Pentagon, funneled military grade weaponry into the hands of Wahhabi terrorists in Syria, including ISIL (allegedly on accident) but then the really weird thing was they were providing precision air strikes against SAA positions that ISIL mechanized infantry were already in the process of advancing towards....hmmm. Vlad issued a decree offering a plot of fertile land and farming tools to any beggar who would show up to take it, but only one guy did... Vlad was puzzled, so he sent out another decree inviting the beggars for a free meal... Something to add was Vlad hated theft and he was harsh to those beggers because he saw begging as a long-term form of theft. I should also add that he only acted this way towards able-bodied beggers. If they were crippled in some way that didn't allow them to work, he was fine with it, but if they could work but didn't, that's when he had a problem with it.

There's also a disputed legend that claims Vlad and his forces were once stationed within a valley and moved to higher ground so that when the enemy forces advanced on them, they'd have the sun in their eyes. Vlad would then unleash rabid bats who would fly away from the sun - as bats do - and directly into the enemy ranks, biting soldiers and spreading disease and infection. Since the soldiers were blinded by the sun, they believed the bats to be Vlad's soldiers turned into bats themselves and that's where the stories of vampires being able to control and turn into bats comes from.

I might not know a lot about medieval eastern european history but I know a lot about literary history and the etymology of folk tales and the like. No the whole vampire shapeshifting into animals specifically bats started in the 19th century.
Stoker didn't actually base the character off of Dracula off of Vlad as everyone thinks. He based his look and has Dracula offhandedly mention his raids against the turk and his brother but that's it. He certainly didn't know enough not to call Dracula a Szekely. Vlad was Romanian stock not Szekely. Stoker definitely didn't take inspiration from such a story and I have come across no record of this story despite my own personal research into vampire myths. If I didn't come across it western european writers during the 19th century didn't either.

Vlad knew what he was doing. He was far better and wiser leader than many of our contemporary western "leaders".

This combination made him a hero to tge people but hated among most of the nobility, not too unlike Julius Caesar in a way, and this eventually led to his betrayal by one of his own subjects during a battle with the Ottoman invaders.

I read a couple stories about Vlad that I like (I also think they are more likely true). The first is that he heard about a woman being accused of being a witch. He had the stake put up, he had her dunked, and when she sank to the bottom of the lake he had her pulled out and revived. He turned to the woman who accused the young girl, and said," these people came to burn a witch. I think they should", and he had the accuser burned. The second story was Vlad was riding by four men shooting archery. He noticed that the three youngest didn't have any shoes. He asked the eldest man why this was, and upon hearing that the father couldn't afford shoes for his sons because he spent his money to train them to shoot for the army, he had three wagons of shoes sent to the family. The next story I heard was about tanners who were charging more to people for their skins so they could pay off the nobles. He had the men skinned alive, so they could see their skins tan in the son. The last story was about a young girl who's father died fighting the Turk. The nobles were arguing about the distribution of the man's land when Vlad asked about his daughter's inheritance. The nobles said that women couldn't run an estate. He pulled out his sword and told the nobles to reconsider.

he left behind a legacy so great that in romania we still use the word "teapa" (meaning stake) to refer to someone getting tricked or fooled, since he often tricked people into believing he was much friendlier in order to see if they'd commit things that he considered to be morally wrong. And if they failed, you guessed it.

It is said that during Vlad's rule, you could drop a coin purse on a road and still find it there the other day. People were afraid of the harsh punishments if they would get caught, which is something good in my opinion.
It is also said that Vlad's parents were killed in a peasant uprising, and so he went back to those peasants and swore he will forgive them so long as they built him his own manor (small castle). The last brick that was used to build that castle was also placed there by the last surviving peasant of the peasants that killed his parents. He was extremely pragmatic, but fair.
