      TBH, I spread my Marmite about that thickly, though I agree that's not the place to start. And, thankfully, I now know where to get more in California. It even turns out to be popular with my Chinese friends, though there's a danger they'll spread it on Yorkshire pudding, which seems to have become a popular breakfast food. Isn't multiculturality wonderful? I'm babbling, but I loved the channel before and now it has Marmite! That's really my only point. So thanks, Midwinter! Spread the culture! Thinly!!

    As much as I love to watch many other miniature painters' videos, you are the one that makes this beginner really want to get into that mini painting.
    You make things feel so accessible and approachable and the act of gaining painting XP from level 0 and up fun and rewarding instead of just a frustrating hurdle to have to scale.
    I am getting my Kimera paints next month, Marco Frisoni pointed me to those and it's the other thing that finally has me excited!
    Thank you!

      @@GoobertownHobbies A little bit goes a long way. I put down a blob of butter on my toast, then add a bit of Marmite to it, and mix them together to produce a Marmite spread. This way you can get an even dispersal of yeast extract over your slice, and avoid hitting a lump of pure umami.

    For anyone reading comments later on and who might be wondering, these red mechs would be part of a Draconis Combine lance (a lance is a group of 4 battlemechs, which is basically a standardized combat group of 'mechs inside the Inner Sphere).
    The 'mechs are, from left to right, a Panther, a Guillotine, a Dragon, and a Quickdraw. These mechs specific to any faction, but the Panther and Dragon are both commonly associated with the Draconis Combine.
    Also/finally, the icon you were trying to recreate is actually a coiled dragon with an open mouth and a forked tail, inside a circle!
    I just spent way too much time replying to a ~2 year old video! :D

      @@GoobertownHobbies @naphaneal Sure the designs themselves are old, at least early 90s. But that product is from 2014 and although the general painting level made a big leap over the last 2-4 years, it's vastly inferior to contemporary box arts from equally small competitors like Corvus Belli. After a long absence from Battletech I was actually shocked earlier this year that they just have started to overhaul their designs to the standards set by MWO.

    The taste of marmite is inversely proportional to the quantity. For the perfect marmite experience:
    * If you have a basement, go the end of the basement farthest from the stairs and make sure the air ducts are closed off.
    * Open the jar, but not for longer than 1 second. Immediately close it and put it in an air-tight bag.
    * Go on vacation for a week.
    * When you return, get out a knife and wave it in the air.
    * Spread the captured marmite on toast and add other toppings to taste.
    Marmite: the homeopathic medicine of bread toppings.

    After going through the list of making sure i can play the basics with painted minis, i try to make sure that whatever box/squad i start painting that i finish it.

    Marmite. You want a pea-sized amount on the tip of the knife, with hot toast washed in butter, add some Heinz baked beans (do you get those over there?) for extra fanciness! Once buttered, you can leave it to go cold but make sure that butter soaks through!

    Yeah, a big part of speed painting is planning ahead and knowing what shortcuts to take to achieve the same results. The red Vallejo primer is brilliant, I definitely need to find some. No need for a basecoat and highlights before the wash with that one. Flock actually works well with 6mm miniatures, you just need to apply it sparsely. Clump foliage makes for great looking bushes if you give them a brown wash and green highlights.

    Definitely better ways to enforce the scale of those 30' tall war machines than having 7' tufts next to them. :) It'd probably crowd the bases and wouldn't reflect the box art, but I would have been tempted to add some 6mm (or 10mm?) vehicles or buildings to the bases (if you were going for an urban look). Or little trees in that scale (for wilderness). Anything to give the impression, "damn, those are big!"

    There's a definite rogue trader feel to those sculpts! Have you tried black templar contrast paint? It's rather great for panel lines when pin applied on minis like these and tanks. I sometimes chose it over nuln oil

    • @GoobertownHobbies
      @GoobertownHobbies  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah there's a cool classic feel to these eh? When I tried out contrast paints I picked fun colorful bottles, but since then a lot of people have made the point that the best products in that line are black, white, and a couple of the browns... that actually makes a ton of sense, and I'd get a bunch more use out neutral color contrast paints anyway! Thanks for the black templar recommendation, I may finally give in and buy another bottle of contrast paint :-)

    • @igorbogdanoff4517
      @igorbogdanoff4517 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@GoobertownHobbies You won't regret it. Make sure you get a pot of contrast medium too - mixing 50/50 with some of the more dirtying citadel washes - like agrax earthshade and reikland flesh shade and doing two or three layers (more towards the deep crevices and less towards the peaks of a model) tends to give you a really nice subtle gradation and more control. abadon black + black templar is also a lovely mix - gives a very smooth flow without making the black as transluscent as if you just add water.

    The most common mistake I constantly see with Marmite, is that people think you have to slather it on like peanut butter or chocolate spread.
    You have to use like the tiniest amount otherwise it will be so savoury you'll hate it.
    Also toast that bread and butter it first. When it's just a hint of Marmite it's nice, but a bit of cheese of melted cheese on it is a master stroke

    • @GoobertownHobbies

I might even be willing to send some of the newer versions of these Battletech mini's to keep it similar. Might not be popular enough for you to do it, but I do think it would be interesting. I had to laugh when I saw you unwrap the box. I'm recently getting back into Battletech after 26 years away, so I've been painting a LOT of Mechs lately. Battletech minis have a very 1980s miniatures feel, even the newer ones, so a fast and loose paint scheme is very appropriate. Well done!

    I have to say, I'm absolutely stunned at how... how BAD those minis are! As a fan of HBS's Battletech computer games, I'd never have guessed the mechs could be represented so poorly. That Dragon just looks incredibly sad, and three of four just kinda stand around in an idle pose. The Panther is the only half-decent posed one... And even then, they're all very very basic.
    BUT, all that being said, you did a fantastic job as usual Brent! Super improvement on the box art in 2 hours!
