  • Do you love winter or do you prefer the warm sunshine of the south? Do you love the idea of hiking in the snow with your dogs but just aren't sure what to wear? I love exploring out outdoor spaces at a time when most people hibernate indoors here in South Dakota. But when winter lasts 6+ months every year, then I like to prepare myself to make the best of it.
In this video, I break down the items I wear based on temperature ranges, etc, so that I can comfortable enjoy the winter months outdoors with my German Shorthairs!

I am with you 100% on taking the dogs out in the winter time, its so fun! I am 1000% a winter person, I adore the snow. I have been trying to convince my husband to move to a colder climate. We get snow here but not nearly enough for my and my GSPs liking. Haha! She LOVES the rain and snow just like me. ❄

I’m with you, fall and winter are my favorite. I was just out with my GSP in the snow doing the same thing. I find myself dressing light because I go on long walks in the woods and end up getting warm quick.

That’s so true. I sometimes do the same! But it’s better than being cold 😂

Not having to wear all the layers sounds pretty nice too! It can get super cold here. I stay inside then 🤪

Rent first and figure out if you like it. I cross-country with my 2 yr old in the colorado mountains and he loves running around me.

At least you can follow their paw prints in the snow and potentially get one GSP to find the other, if one goes missing.

Haha! The paw prints go in all directions but I’d eventually get to them! Thankfully they come back looking for me and each other. There has only been one time back when I only had 1 GSP that I couldn’t find him for a significant amount of time. Guessing he found a critter and didn’t want to leave it. 😜

Great video, today my boy Eli is staying inside chewing on his bone. It is -42 ° up here, where I'm from in Canada.

My gsp loves the snow. I wear Yak Trax for traction on ice. I will not take my gsp out if the temperature is less than 10F also.

A couple of weeks ago, my wife and I took our 18 month old GSP hiking in the Georgia mountains for a couple of days. The temps were in the high 20's to low 40's. Where we were hiking there were numerous streams and waterfalls to explore. Mika (the dog, not my wife 🙂) loves the water and was in and out of the streams. For the most part she did not get wet past her belly, except for dunking her head in the water to grab sticks. As usual, nothing slowed her down and she never appeared to be in any discomfort. We did have little coat on her. How cold is too cold? When should we have the coat on her and when should we be keeping her out of the water? We live in Florida, so this won't be a frequent occurrence.

We put a coat on when the wind chill is below zero. GSP coats are made for water as it will just run right off. But you do want to protect them from long exposure to cold. We like this coat if you need one. a.co/d/66QkoSY

Hi Tammy. My family and our dog 3 y.o. female GSP live in a warm climate. Our coldest day in winter is usually up to - 6 degrees Celsius. Next year we are planning to move to Calgary (Canada). I wonder how GSPs handle frosty weather when it's -25 or -30 degrees Celsius outside. Of course, it is possible to put on a coat on your dog, but what about the rest of the body parts? Ears, feet, respiratory system, etc? I would really appreciate your opinion.

Typically in that weather you wouldn't want them outside for prolonged exposure. Just bathroom and then back in. We use a coat and then some shoes as well when it gets really cold to protect their paws.
