    He's actually saying something like...
    "Oh! Oh! What a beauty you are!
    Please, let me give your shoulders a rub-rub!
    I’ll give you Zeni if you’ll let me rub them!"
    And if you go back later he calls you lecherous for wanting another. At least in the Japanese.

    @HCBailly in mythology, fairies cursed people who stepped into a ring of toadstools, usually making them dance until they died of exhaustion, or until their legs fell off. Whichever came first.

    My Japanese isn't the best, but the Puff Puff Massage is washing his back (effectively giving him a bath). You can do this later with Deis/Bleu too, which makes the back ache translation fall even further apart.

    By the way, only the item shop has that 30% price increase. Selling at the weapon shop only gives a 10% increase on selling.

    Yeah it is my opinion, I thought I was clear enough on that. It is a fact that Kefka was more popular in the West than he was in Japan though. I'm not going to say that Woosley was solely responsible, but I think his translation was a factor.

    Reminds me a bit of the mushroom hermit in Breath of Fire II - except you could get Katt to deal with him and, well, let's just say she don't put out that easily~ ^.^;

    Off topic, I have some news for any Dragon Questers.
    I signed a petition that will be sent to Square Enix and Nintendo to help localize Dragon Quest VII for the 3DS in the US and Europe.
    If you want to see this awesome remake come out over here, head to change.org and sign the petition. They need only 14 more people to sign it as of this comment.
    Show your support! Sign it and help bring Dragon Quest VII here!
    Keep questing, Dragon Warriors!

    At least his translations tended to be easy to understand and plenty entertaining in their own right, I still prefer his version of FFVI and Chrono Trigger to the retranslations. He's a big part of the reason Kefka became so popular in the West.

    HCBailly, you should try Breath of Fire 2 anyway. Even with the bad translations, it's one of my favorite in the series. I was really hoping you would continue on and let's play this entire series. If the translation really bugs you, I know a great translation patch you can use.

    That's your personal opinion. I felt the retranslated versions of both games (the OFFICIAL ones, not the fan ones) were much better.
    And no, Kefka was plenty entertaining originally. Yeah, some of his lines were iomproved, but he also deleted some really REALLY excellent lines from him because he thought he could do better (He couldn't).

  • @7thlittleleopard7
    @7thlittleleopard7 11 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Oh God, yes that skill. The GBA version changed a lot of things like the windows(transparency/colour), increased exp/money amounts, face art and the font... The menu/battle hud is especially hideous. The music has also been butchered because it's GBA, though there is a handy dash feature (but that's what Rand is for!). I much prefer the SNES version myself.

    Lastly, I wouldn't sell the SmartRG. It's not like you're going to be pumped full of more accessories then you know what to do with. Even if you save every single accessory you can find in this game, you'll only barely have enough for 2 for every party member.

    So was another character (spoilers), but the real shame was Karn's absence in it. I used Karn for as long as he joined; his unique skillset is very much OP'd. Every Slam once he learned his best spell was no short of 999 damage!

    The translation of the second game is playable, and it's hard to miss the gist of what's going on with (almost) every scene, but it definitely does obscure a lot of story related details.
    There is however a fan "retranslation" patch made by a German group that's been available for a few years now. In addition to fixing all the wacky errors of the original, the writing style is good and pretty succint and I would highly recommend it if you ever play BoF II.

    • @ChairmanMeow1
      @ChairmanMeow1 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I finally went back to beat BoF 2 since it kicked my ass as a kid. I had forgotten how cryptic parts are, almost impossible to advance without an FAQ/Guide. Im thinking of playing it again to try the translation, I guess I still wanted to beat the 'original' version since thats what ruined my childhood. :D

    • @Thunk00
      @Thunk00 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ChairmanMeow1 Did you make it all the way through?
      Don't know that you can entirely blame the translation for being tough to get through. Games in those days weren't built to be run through in a couple days. They were intentionally cryptic, giving some guidance but ultimately designed around the idea that you'd always be going back and checking out all the places you'd visited before once again.
      It's a tradition that started with the early Ultimas and held true for two decades. In those times development tools were still pretty primitive. Games were painstakingly written in assembly language in a gruelling process, and memory and processing power were still at a premium, although becoming more plentiful on a regular basis. Creating these big RPG world was a huge deal, and developers making you cross them back and forth and examine things repeatedly was the way that they made those worlds feel like they had depth, like they were alive.
      The world of Breath and Fire 2 was really a magnificent one for its time. Just think on it: The clean graphics, the diverse environments, the flashy battle scenes, the varied races and architecture styles, the little hidden houses and beaches and shrines, and the interconnectedness and intrigues. Combing through that was no chore, it was a privilege.

    • @ChairmanMeow1
      @ChairmanMeow1 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Thunk00 I did beat it finally, just a few days ago. Sweet revenge for the pain it caused me as a kid. Some things I appreciated more as an adult were definitely the music, and the more mature story line. I had a lot more fun with the shamans and fusing as I understood it way better now. And yea Im not faulting them for the translation at all, it was the 90s! Just made me remember of that time before the Internet when my only help would have been a friend or a paper strategy guide.
      Oh yea, heres a cryptic example. The last boss needs to have this spell Infinity cast on him. If not, the fight just keeps going on until you die. Its possible to make it to the last boss without ever learning that ability if you dont enter a specific room at the beginning of the dungeon. Nothing in the game directs you to look for it or that its necessary later. I had to reload an earlier save point and do the entire end dungeon over again.

    With my knowledge of Japanese cluture, my best educated assumption would be that the old man wanted Nina to wash his back in the bathtub. Using the excuse that since she was a healer she was "healing" his back but I'm sure he's really just a dirty old man who gets off on getting a cute girl to wash his back while naked right behind him.
