Regarding the Kardashians. My older brother was in college and worked for their father who was a majority partner of a vending machine company that had over 400 locations in LA and Orange County California. My brother, always a hard worker, scouted spots to put more machines and eventually had 30 put in three community colleges in the area (1990).
When his name came up in a sales/production meeting, Mr. Kardashian found my brother loading his van and and he peeled off $2000 bucks and told my brother to keep up the good work.
When My brother graduated college (the first in our family), Mr. Kardasian wrote a nice note (my brother had it framed) and gifted him a $1000 dollars. Basically the note said that he would be at a loss when my brother left the company and 'made himself' in the future.
