    I'm so glad I left Aikido for several of the reasons Janet speaks of. Love the honesty. She is well aware of the problems that have polluted aikido.

    What a pleasure! Truly thoughtful interview. I was a white belt at San Diego Aikikai when Janet sensei came after Japan. Lovely aikido. San Diego had a board of advisors and Chiba sensei encouraged beginners (like me) to address concerns to any on the board. San Diego had very good female instructors. Thanks, Ron

    Very nice interview. We definitely need more women teachers like her in aikido and other sports.
    Having lived in US, there are much fewer population of women doing aikido as well. And even looking at other sports in US, there are more men coaching women’s team in traditional sports like softball, soccer, and basketball.

    I really enjoyed and learned a lot from Janet Sensei's interview. I have just started a Ki Society dojo at the university where I teach in Brisbane and especially took note of the gender issue she referred to. Also her answer to the issue of whether aikido will someone a better person and her very truthful answer. Keep the great interviews coming.

    Janet's aikido seems just the same as it was when she was 14, how strange that it should still be so clearly recognisable so many years later. Of course - even at 14 it was amazing.

    its really interesting to have janet clift interview and her point of view about the practice and everything around aikido
    she look really open minded and she take care about the students i completely agree with her than many men dont take ukemi when they practice with ladies men have to forget their ego :-) im sure that aikido keep people better but every person is different thank to Erard sensei to give us the opportunity to lesson Janet sensei interview long live to aikido ;-)

    Another excellent interview , very rich and informative . I liked when they mentioned the beginners and how they should be treated . Also I liked the fact that you will not feel better in your life only because you practice Aikido and that you should practice seriously ... Keep up the good work Guillaume , you are enriching Aikido history , hope to meet you one day in Hombo dojo :-)

    They forgot to ask her one important question: have you ever had to use aikido in a real life and death situation? a woman whose traveling all over the world as Janet senei must have had at least one incident where she had to use her art to defend herself. it was still a good interview, very honest and very insiteful. thank you for your cander. sensei

    Another interesting and informative interview Guillaume. As a now middle aged woman, when I began learning Aikido and Ninjutsu In Australia a number of years ago, I was pretty much the only female at the classes I went to at the dojo. The biggest issue was I was the newest student for a period of time and I really struggled with learning with other way more advanced students. I didn't feel like I was getting anywhere really. Having beginner only classes would have been helpful. I also got sick and tired of being asked out by a lot of guys after every training session (I learn't archery as well and same happened there as well). I was there to learn martial arts, not to get a date!!! I ended up leaving both arts because I got despondent that I was getting nowhere and having to justify my being there. I hope it is different now.

    • @skipinkoreaable
      @skipinkoreaable 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It may have been that martial arts was not for you, but assuming that you really wanted to do it, it sounds more likely that you hadn't yet found a school that was right for you. If it's something that you would really like to do, I would really encourage you to get back into a martial art that you like, be that aikido or something else. I've trained some different martial arts for a long time and I've trained with and sometimes learned from some women who really got a lot out of their training or even got really good at it. In my own experience training with women, I would say that they do tend to be physically weaker and there can be some issues training together, but I've met a few dedicated and skillful ones that really can throw somebody like me around. There were some ladies at different schools that I learned at who really seemed to enjoy their training and find a lot of meaning in it. I would say you could really get a lot out of martial arts if you find a teacher or a school that is right for you. It's never too late to get back into it.

      It comes from the verb, ukeru (受ける) which means to receive. In this sense, it means to recieve someone's technique.

    She has just put me off her style of Akido. Not only is she ageist and sexist. If it was a man saying all that she would be screaming sexisim. Double- standards,. I have given advice to both men and women during my martial arts career(which has spanned over thirty years off and on), but never in a patronising or condescending way. Just to be helpful and boost confidence. That's all. What she said herself about the attitude of men was extremely condescending as well as patronising. I thought being helpful and thoughtful to one's fellow students was an essential part of of martial arts training. My originally high estimation of her as a martial artist has really gone down.
