We bought this set for under ur Christmas tree around 1992 and moved around 1993 and it was packed up. In all of the moves and life we lived since then, it was never unpacked. Just unpacked it to put under our tree. We had to look at this to make sure we were doing it correctly. It runs perfectly; even the boxcar with sound works!!! After over 30 years, It is just perfect!!!

Is there any way to turn off the sound?

I think there’s a switch inside the locomotive but it seems like you’d have to disassemble it to get to the switch. Anyone know for sure?

I am planning to set up a layout with Siding Track Sets LGB 19901 and LGB 19902, plus two Stainz locomotives (one is a vintage one from 1985) at the same time and a LGB 69675 tender with sound. My controller will be a LGB 5A Amp Power 51079 Controller Transformer with 60195 Power Pack. Will that be safe for the locomotives, specially for the vintage 1980s Stainz?

Almost certain that's plenty, I think the Stainz use less than 1 amp typically unless you're pulling a massive train.
