I lived opposite the post office right at tge bottom opposite the Foundry Arms. There were houses at the bottom of Newman Road and further up that have been demolished. There were shops and houses all the way down Barrow Road as well. Terraced on one side, back to backs on the other overshadowed by two huge gasometers as well. The gasworks caught fire and you could feel the heat from it on our windows. The white buikding up Newman Road was the Wincobank Hotel. I went to Sunday School at St Thomas church and before it became Brendan Ingles gym the building opposite it was the church hall. There was a slipper baths and wash house where you walked up Fife Street. Yes, loads of smog looking down the hill over the steelworks, now Meadowhall. Thanks for taking me back in time Tim.
Were you on the side where the Chinese was, leading to the cobblers and butchers....mason and Davis opposite or going the other way where the hunt family lived?
@myra6087 Yes, it was a different but memorable time. I remember if you walked up Newman Road, there was a corner shop, Branwoods. On the corner of Tansley Street. I remember the vicar at St Thomas's, too. I think he was called Fred Etherington. But, I may be wrong. It's a long time ago.
Thanks for adding some meet to the bones Myra. Everything has been stripped out everywhere. Had a few ridiculing me calling it a town centre, but that was how these places were.
@@alanr1062 Yes, I remember Branwoods. They had a lovely big alsation that used to lie outside. Dr Wynne's, on Newman Road and the penny lolly shop on the way to school. Happy days.
The former Church Hall, now boxing gym across from the church is Brendan Ingle's,which is now run by one of his sons. Brendan used to live in the big detached house next to the church. The Wincobank village hall is quite new. It used to be an old people's home which was part demolished and turned into this. The white building on the corner was the Wincobank Hotel, now being converted into flats. The car lot on the corner of Ecclesfield Rd was the dallas bar, formerly the engineers. Blackburn is underneath the railway bridge where the old railway station was. Hope this helps Tim.
@timawells To be honest Tim there's not a lot there. Apart from the old deserted train station, which is now a private house, a few industrial works along the road are all still in use. Blackburn estate is underneath the M1 motorway bridge, up Dropping well rd, on the left hand side. West Hill, Rotherham is on the right hand side. The Railway pub and The Crown are no longer pubs, however I'm almost certain The Royal Oak pub is still open.
Hi Tim , enjoyed that my Godmother lived on Newman road until she died a couple of years back . Always thought the area epitomised working class Sheffield so down to earth , I sometimes would call in the Foundry on my way to work when I was on afternoons a cracking little Tetley house.
I was born there. It's not a town it use to be a sort of Village. This is real Wincobank, the part at the top beyond Newman Road is not Wincobank it's Sheffield 5 and comes under Shiregreen Flower Estate.
I remember going in the WMC a couple of times to wedding receptions as my friend was a mobile DJ. Been in the Dallas Bar on the corner of Ecclesfield Road a few times with my mates, it used to be absolutely packed at the weekend. Didn’t realise it had been demolished.
That off license at 3:47 was run by Sal Hamed, prince naseems dad, great guy always good for a chat. The white building was the wincobank hotel pub. End of ecclesfield road car sales place was the ill famed Dallas bar!! First building you came to was beedhams news agents, then it was the German shop part way up, betting shop and then Wadsworth's (Mrs Wadsworth and Mrs redfearn were really lovely ladies who are remembered fondly.
Nigel I was laughed at for calling it a town centre by a few, but they don't get out these places where self contained with lots of decent shops and facilities.
Did Concord Park go from the back of Shiregreen to Wincobank, I can remember walking over to see Tinsley viaduct with my grandpa when it first opened and that was through the park? Thanks
@timawells many people who live in page hall say its firth park because Of negative connotations. But they are clearly distinct. Especially that they both have different postcodes
The new houses further up were built on a tip. Along Ecclesfield Road is Bluebell Wood famous for masses of bluebells in Spring. I lived there for a few years it looks like twilight zone. My daughter had a birthday party in the Wincobank Hotel.
Im sure at 7:15 that used to be a corner shop and sandwich shop, I used to live on Sandstone Avenue off Jenkin rd, you could get straight onto the Roman Fort from our back garden, there is a memorial to Brendan somewhere, I'll visit on my mountain bike.

John is it worth doing Blackburn some time. Always reminds me of Lancashire

Sad isn't it Jon as community is stripped out. The railway pub was painted white now black.

Only been up that way the once to explore the Wincobank Fort area. Great views of the city from there x
Is there much of interest around the Wincobank Fort? I bet its a nightmare there at the moment with the snow.
@ I wouldn’t say there is but it is worth it for the views.
@@jasmineaskwith8092 I know the views are good from Crookes. What happened to the iron man?

I am guessing so much as gone Richard. We lost so much in lockdown.
I'm sure that big pub on the corner was the wincobank hotel
Yes, definitely the Wincobank Hotel. That was a proper old pub
that off license on newman road was naseem hameds family [boxer].
@burningsoul1365 Yes, I remember Sal Hamed. He used to sell us cigarettes on our way to Hinde House in the morning 🤣🤣🤣
Love it, reminded me of 'Open All Hours'.
Yes definitely Wincobank. I used to go to Sunday school on Newman Road. Now it's the boxing gym.
Great look around, we had friends who lived there up that steep hill. Thanks 😊
I only got part the way up Hazel. I was doing the viaduct from end to end and was concerned about the light.
@timawells can't do those steep climbs these days but great you do for your followers thanks 👍
@@hazelmanship7516 Probably needs a chair lift Hazel as the folk get older who have lived their all their lives.

Have you been passed the old Wincobank & Blackburn Railway Station
I did a short video on it. I djdng find the railway pub and station until I came back from the viaduct.
Hi tim good video mate doesnt look a bad area to live
Just needs some TLC and regular picking up of the litter Andy. But I liked it.

@@andywright3450 Tinsley viaduct tomorrow Andy. Barnsley a week on Saturday.
Hi, love your videos. Just wondered why you seem to walk on the roads rather than the paths. Seems dangerous!
I only walk on roads to cross them, Thanks for your concern.
They was a Wash House in Wincobank years ago

Tim I am confused about sharp lines. I thought Firth Park was Page Hall. I also found out where Firvale was.

@@Speedkam I found out Firth Park and Page Hall are clearly different areas. Even Firvale is step up from Firth park.
Winkobank is a place in Sheffield, obviously it has no town centre, sheffield has a city centre
Its the closest I can get to naming what I was doing. We know Sheffield city centre as town, we never said we are going to the city centre.
The new houses further up were built on a tip. Along Ecclesfield Road is Bluebell Wood famous for masses of bluebells in Spring. I lived there for a few years it looks like twilight zone. My daughter had a birthday party in the Wincobank Hotel.
Wincobank town centre 😂😂😂 wincobank isn’t a town it’s a suburb of Sheffield
So is Stocksbridge town.
