P.S. I haven't read this one yet, but on topic of Star Trek novels, I haven't stopped thinking about "Dead Endless" by Dave Galanter since it came out in 2019 because it's just so good. How did he manage to fit both heartbreaking romance *and* Tilly dancing to "Old McDonald had a farm" in one book???
thank you so much for these book reviews! ive been trying to get back into reading in general and star trek novels have helped a lot! i just ordered this book before you posted this and now im even more excited for my space family
Oh my gosh, yes, I just read this! Overall I really enjoyed it and am excited to hopefully see more SNW stories. I’d actually started seeking out some of the Star Trek novels mentioned in the video you collaborated on about the ten best Star Trek novels when I saw this one was coming out. I’m a big reader so both that video and this one were just so awesome to see 💛
Great video! I purchased this book on release day, but haven't had a chance to start it yet. Looking forward to it. I believe we discussed this before when I commented on another video of yours, but Miller(one of my favorite SW novelists) also wrote the excellent Discovery paperback "The Enterprise War" that explained where Pike and crew were during the events of Discovery S1. I don't think the SNW series had even been green lit yet when that novel was written and came out, but it certainly further helped make the case that Pike and crew could carry their own series. I recommended and gifted that book to Trek fans(both hardcore and casual) I know to do my small part in making the case for how a great a potential series with Pike and crew could be. It definitely deserved a hardcover release and I don't know who makes those decisions and why. One of his SW novels, "Kenobi" is also one I recommend to casual fans of that franchise who are looking to read a SW novel without being weighed down by the baggage of the old EU/Legends. It's basically the classic western film "Shane" set on Tatooine. A nice slow burn space western. Anyway, thanks for this review of "The High Country" and I hope to dive into this week myself!
A kinda sequel to Enterprise’s The North Star?! I love it when little and often forgotten aspects of Trek are brought back! I’m adding this to my list!
Many years ago I used to collect Start Trek books (and Doctor Who and various other series.) I stopped cold turkey when I realised that I was spending almost all my money on them. There were, if I remember, at least two monthly Doctor Who novels to go with a Star Trek, a Next Generation, a DS9, a Voyager and a couple others featuring other characters and other starships. On top of that there were occasional Highlander, Quantum Leap, Babylon 5 and so on AND I was picking up older ST novels when I saw them second hand. Elon Musk couldn't have afforded them all. I live in China now and couldn't get them even if I wanted them, probably a good thing for my bank account.
Finally finished this novel and I really, really enjoyed it! At first, I thought I would hate it due to the Old West themes, but damn did it really capture that element of silly fun that SNW conveys so well. Really, really have found this author to do great justice to the Trek universe, thinking the glorious depiction of Emperor Georgiou in Die Standing, 😊and I hope to see more titles from him soon!
Sounds good. Horses, cowboy stuff, "high country," and science fiction, maybe colonies, it sounds very good. Thanks for the heads-up, Jessie. -- Hey, when possible, could you highlight if/when there are also audiobook versions for new books? Often, any audiobook comes out about a year later, but if possible, it's really good to know if there's the print, ebook, and audiobook versions available. Thanks!
I've never read a Star Trek book. I think I've always been afraid they would be poorly written, stereotypes of the show (whichever one it's linked to.) But it has maps! All good books have maps. I think you sold me on trying this out Jessie.
I have a credit on Audible and have been wanting a Star Trek novel to listen to and absolutely loved Strange New World so this will be an instant pick up! Last book suggestion was Legends and Lattes and that ended up being one of my favorite things from last year so I can't wait for this next book suggestion!
Why is it that novels are already better than what they put on the air?? ( I know I'm dating myself). My favorites are the likes of Peter David, Judith and Garfield Reeves-Stephens, Vonda McIntyre, just to name a few.🖖
If you don't know "her" (it's a pseudonym for two adoptive sisters), you might want to read L A Graf. She focuses her stories in the Other Four characters of the OS. Those are some very fine books.
I take a medication that makes it difficult for me to read pages of prose, so reading a novel is a Herculean struggle for me. This reality has, sadly, resulted in me reading novels very rarely. You're a reviewer I respect and a Trek fan, so I was wondering if you had an opinion on the series of novels unofficially known as "Deep Space Nine: Season 8"? In all the world, those are the books I'd really love to read. I don't know if that makes me shallow, but it's the reality.
when i see SNW take on "Turnabout Intruder" and Sybok and all the "horrible" content and makes it something good i like it... but they should have left Captain Kirk and "Balance of Terror" alone. i wish they had just remade "The Cage" for the pilot of this series though, since they already showed Mina and the Talosians especially. i also DETEST the "i cant change my fate" BS they are doing with Pike, why does JJ's Pike get to live longer then? but i've always preferred the Hercules Legendary Journeys/ Terminator 2 way of looking at it... "no fate, but what we make"...
I recently finished this book. While I liked all the ideas it presented, I think maybe it was overstuffed by a few. I'm not sure which I would have jettisoned, however.

Thank you for filling my head with pictures of Anson Mount on a horse on this fine Saturday

I mean Star Trek novels have been keeping the content of Star Trek alive between Enterprise and Discovery; not counting the movies
It is also available from audible if you would rather listen while driving or relaxing in a bubble bath.
Your endorsement is all I need to go to my local bookstore and order it!
Ive got that book. Love it. Good review jessie. By the way i do ride horses as well.
Thanks! Because of your review I had to buy this book.
I’m thinking this was initially intended as an episode, but they only had ten and it got cut, so they decided to make it into a novel instead.

This is the second rec I've had for this book in the last few days, so looks like this is next on my reading list!

This sounds great, will have to check it out.
ust gone and ordered it, thanks for the review without spoilers.

For a moment, I was like: "Has season 2 of Strange New Worlds dropped early???" XD
Same
I want to read it!

Just bought it (on Audible, unabridged.) Thanks for the tip!
Robert Asprin has a series of book that I think you might like. They are somewhat clever and very punny.

Wow! 16h and 12mn in audio. I think I gonna read it instead.

I don't know why this is making me think wasn't Section 31 mentioned in season 2 of Picard? Please make my brain shut up.
