Are BMW’s Expensive to Maintain?

  • Here is the amount of money I've spent on my BMW X5M and BMW M3
    I've also talked to another BMW owner with a higher mileage F85 X5M.
    We always hear about the bad things about BMW ownership but the point of this video is to say is that it's not all horror stories and you don't need to be rich to have one of these cars. I think having 2-3k money put aside for a just in case is worth it. Most people spend more than that in extended warranties anyway.

    Thank you for the informative videos, I’m a new follower. I purchased my first BMW 3 Series three years ago and drove it for around 20,000 miles and loved it. I just purchased a X5 sDrive 35i and was going through all your X5 videos for information on cost of ownership, maintenance and mods. It’s helped a lot.

    Ed you've taught me a lot about BMW now that I'm a own of 330i. Had I seen some of your videos before buying my car I probably would have not become a BM owner...

      100% b58 is one of the most reliable engines out right now. Much better than all previous variations of the inline 6.

    Excellent advice I own a 2016 BMW X6M with a warranty. I had for a lil over a year. Out of pocket I spent about $400 on spark ⚡️ plugs 🙌🏽

    😮I love the BMW but the servicing is not going to work for my purse. I will stick to the Lexus family and continue to admire the BMW machines from the road. Thanks for the education! Continued blessings!

    @edwardmcars I’ve purchased extended maintenance plans for my x1, x4, x5, and my wife’s 5 series. The trick when buying the plans is to pay for them separately from the car purchase. They may run $3-5k depending on length of coverage, but they include brakes, tuneup’s, inspections, and oil changes. Better to get them separately so the additional $100 a month isn’t added into your monthly payment when the coverage can end before loan term so you can keep from throwing money away.

    5:28 👀👀👀 really simple to do??? I wish you lived in the Uk and I’ll gladly pay you to do it cos every garage I called in London were telling me they don’t touch the air suspension which left me no choice than take my sagging x5 to bmw who charged me a whopping £3,500 to replace the belows and the air compressor which they themselves struggled to install because as they installed , one air bag blew out immediately and so they have to re do it again!! I saw your vid replacing it, you are incredible !!

    I love my X5M, it's my second one. I never tire of driving it. Plus it looks great, sounds mean 😉, comfortable. I buy a new car every 2 for tax purposes but having a hard time finding another in this market. I appreciate all the valuable info in your videos.

    Own a X5 50i, oil change is about $120, 10 qt or oil and a $30-40 filter.

  • @M3dicayne
    @M3dicayne 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Hi Ed,
    Been following (and now subscribing, too) you for a while and own an X5 M50d (yeah, the 381hp tri-turbo Diesel engine) since 2018.
    I love that car! It has almost the same torque and due to German Autobahn, I can even drive 220-250km/h (130-150mph) without problems.
    It has been pretty reliable but you save a TON of money if you have someone (or do it yourself like me) who owns the proper software to deal with things (best would be ISTA-D).
    And listen to your engine (I immediately felt when a glow pencil broke) although there just was a bit of rumbling my GF not even felt.
    Regarding the air suspension in the rear, you might want to take the more expensive ones as the cheap ones are due for exchange after 1-2 years again.
    Take care.

    • @eddiemcars
      @eddiemcars  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you for your support! I agree with everything. You have to listen to it when it talks to you. Regarding the air suspension, I’ll keep that in mind when it comes time to replace it. We know it’s going to fail at some point.

    • @M3dicayne
      @M3dicayne 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@eddiemcars It is funny though; when you have driven a 30d or 40d and then any M version, you think you are sitting in a sportscar. The rear, where the air suspension should be (last time I checked it was, lol), is really hard. Every bump is easily recognized. But I guess it is the price for having a sporty SUV with corner driving abilities where you might forget you are driving a high 2,3 tonnes vehicle...

    never owned a BMW, but my love for them sparked tremendously since 2020, and now I'm on the fence about my first being either an X6 or and X5 Msport. your content has made my love for this brand even more intense. still have questions and worries before I pull the trigger .

      Don’t get either unless you understand & are okay with the problems. Even among BMW fans, those two models are the most problematic. A better but slightly boring buy according to many is the X3.

    My BMW gets a oil change every 5k miles and I don't have have an M, just the X5 xDrive35i with some M lite upgrades like MPE and MPPK. For oil changes I get a Mann HU 816 X filter at my local auto part store and my engine oil from Walmart, either Castrol Edge 0w40 in winter and Pennzoil Platinum Euro 5w40 in summer. I typically spend last than $100 in parts and labor when I take the BMW at a local lube shop. Also had to replace both air bags I got the parts on Amazon and my GF is a red seal auto tech and does most of the maintenance for me in his shop.

    I've owned a 323, M3, X5, 335i, and now X5M. I suggest buying new for the lower models and only CPO for the bigger ticket rigs. I had a 997.2 and 991.2 and having CPO takes care of any concern you will have.
    Here's the other key: I'm single, happy, one mouth to feed, see roughly 7k monthly, and fake it like I make it.
    You can afford these toys, just have a plan and if possible... GO CPO.

    Brakes for the M at a dealer are like $4K, not $2K. Rotors are $1000 alone outside the dealer just for the rear. Pads $100. So generally labor at a indy shop should be about $350.

      They don’t come with wheel locks unless it was added third party. They can’t use a impact driver or it will mess up the key.

    All German cars are expensive to maintain if you take it to the dealership. Either learn to do it yourself or find a local mechanic but they tend to charge for the difficulty of dealing with those brands.

      BMW will only change the oil at 10,000 miles or 1 year which ever comes first.
      With these engines, it’s better to change anywhere between 5-7,000 miles.
