This Case Study House #22 will never go out of style. Buck and Carlotta worked thier butts off to build this place. Buck created a model of this site, and Koenig used that as the base of the design and provided the calculations to support the building. Masterpiece of Buck and Carlotta Stahl.
Humanity can do amazing things when when we come together for the common good. So many iconic structures have such humble beginnings. Thank you for sharing.
Such an iconic house with a very human story to tell. We brought the kids to visit the home years ago. Even as youngsters, they really connected with the house and stories of the Stahl family. It remains a special memory for our family to this day.
Wonderful, insightful episode. PBS SoCal did a full documentary on the entire Case Study House program. It's worth checking it out on their PBS SoCal app.
Had a lovely visit to the house a few years back, Everyone was absolutely delightful. Side-note: anyone reflexively say "NO SHOES IN THE HOUSE" to themselves whilst watching? :)
What really baffles me that it was built on a shoestring for a middle class family… 5 years till they paid of the mortgage for the site, then they were able to pursue the construction. Determinantion, creativity, ingenuity.
How incredibly fortunate for this family. As they noted, getting in on that land was not allowed for those of other races which is a tragedy still being felt. However it is still a beautiful home.
John Entenza’s case study program did not meet his goal in that only one case study house was ever replicated. While it was successful in other ways, it was a failure in that sense.
Absolutely loved touring this house. What a special place.

OMG! To live there is probably heavenly... who owns the house now?
The house is owned by the children Shari and Bruce - featured here in the film.
Is it loud when it rains? Did you have AC? Is there more of this?

Question for Shari and Bruce: How difficult was it to sneak in and out boy- and girlfriends?
