Often I get asked similar questions. What to take on a day hike? What's in my day pack? What do I need to start hiking? Well, I don't profess to know it all, and I do not consider myself in any way a professional or expert, but I do get out often and make the most of the outdoors. And, so, in this video, I discuss some of these topics, and share what I wear, pack and take with me, as well a few safety tips and advice to help out. I'm sure you all have your own ideas and tips, so please feel free to share them with us in the comments.

I like hiking very much too.
My top safety tip for anybody going anywhere miles/hours from help is ask yourself this.
"If you have an accident, eg: a twisted or broken ankle and cant stand or walk and if you cannot keep yourself warm and dry while waiting for rescue YOU are not equipped to be there."
You can apply this to any outdoor activity.

Great recommendations 😃 As you say-you quickly learn what you need/don’t need. So I’ve learnt that it’s a good idea to line my pack with a waterproof bag, that hiking poles are great for tired legs or balancing across streams (I’m an expert at falling in 🤣) and that a foam sitpad is definitely worth carrying. Oh and chocolate-ALWAYS 👍

Great advice for beginners and “know-it-alls” too. Personally I like to have a cutting tool like a pocket knife, multi tool or small fixed blade and some type of cordage too. Thanks for the excellent video.
I used to carry a knife, but never used it during a hike. I would probably more likely to use that and the cordage for camping though. Thanks for the feedback and thanks for watching.

It is a good budget bag for sure.
We always go well prepared when out hiking. We even have a storm shelter & survival kit and blanket especially when hiking with children. We try and promote these in our videos.

Another nice video Trev. You are getting much better at this TH-cam lark. 👍. The vids you are making at the moment are full of useful bits of info that even an 'old sweat' needs reminding of. Also for the old sweats, gear has changed over the years and even some of the tech stuff is cheap now.

Good advice Trev. Always best to start at the lower end when starting out, until you are sure this is something you'll enjoy. No point spending hundreds on boots you never use again! 🙂

For us folks who are more of the old badger than young ibex, hiking poles are pure legs savers and great to lean on when trying to catch breath. I would recommend poles for everyone doing moderate and above hikes.
Yes, Colin you are quite right. I did think hiking poles should have got a mention, but after I'd uploaded it. I have used them in the past!

@@SummitOrNothing I sometimes bring trekking poles, but I rarely use them. I find them useful only if the surface is quite smooth.
Hi there... I might have missed it If I have, apologies. I think when out walking it's important to carry at least one supermarket type plastic bag and some toilet paper or paper towels. So many times I've come across some one having to go, and leaving it on the fells. Just pop it in a part of your back pack reserved for this.
Really enjoyed this video! I like “professional” trev videos. I have been using a food thermos a lot recently. Fill it up with hot food before you leave and still nice and warm 4 hours later. They can be cheap (sub £20) and come with a spoon etc. A lot less stuff to worry about.
I got a cheap food thermos type flask in one of the bargain type supermarkets for under a fiver. It works well.
Yea that may be a good idea. Can also use them to take ice cream in the summer too!

Yeah great video good tips i have the little pot and stove set up you have i also take it when metal detecting . How are the adventure dehydrated food think i might put one of those in my backpack and which flavor do you recommend cheese.

Hi Summit or Nothing Great Video very informative, but one question this might sound stupid but how do you use a compass on walking etc I’m assuming that you use them sometimes on your walks etc thank you.
As usual buddy a great vid. As a thought , is there any chance you and Kath could do a info vid regarding your camera and video camera equipment. There are dozens and dozens out there but it would be great to see a no nonsense honest to goodness review of the stuff you use. I've just ordered some Salomon walking boots,down from £155 to £85 ,think I got a bargain!
I also carry a 6x6 lightweight tarp folds down to nothing,I've used it in sudden downpours,squat down and wrap it over you until down pour stops,dry as a bone!

Great video 👍 Do you ever take some form of knife with you? I normally take my Swiss army knife does come in handy quite a lot.
Funnily enough, no. I've got one in my camping bag, but have never really used it and dont think I have ever taken it hiking. I know many do.

@@SummitOrNothing I do take a knife even on short walks on the moors. When I was younger walking with my dad, we once found a sheep that was tangled in some brambles and some old binder twine, he used his knife to cut it free and remove some of the foliage from its wool. Sort of a life lesson I've taken from that.

Agree with your opinion on footwear mate, just about knowing the conditions... Sometimes trail runners ain't good enough, I'd love to be nimble..
I use a survival blanket as a waterproof liner for my bag, it's always there and it's functional too.
That's a great tip, Andrew, ensuring you have the blanket but making it work foe it's place in the backpack as all too often it's not needed. Thanks for watching!
I wouldn't recommend a down jacket for hill walking particularly in damp wet conditions
Always pack a waterproof for over the top

How does a map help you if you're lost in the middle of nowhere? There aren't any signs telling you where you are.
There are always signs to translate from the surrounding areas to the map. The best way to work out where you are is to find three points around you and triangulate your position from that.
