    My favorite auction game is Biblios. The first half of the game is limited information of getting a small hand of cards that determines hat you have to bid for in the second half of the game. I love how you can either bid money for cards that win the game or discard a certain number of cards to bid for more money to use for later in the auction. Super fun and a lot of great decisions.

    Bidding for the favor of the gods in Cyclades, is still one of my favorite auction games.

    • @waferthinninja
      @waferthinninja 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah this would be my number 1. The fact you can't immediately re-bid on the same god when you are outbid adds a whole extra layer of strategy

    Good list. I do appreciate the distinction between auctions and “I price you choose”
    I also like Modern Art as an auction game, with a variety of auction mechanisms, and Estates would have made my top 10.

    I know it isn't the main thrust of the game but Dune's auction system is amazing.
    Blind bidding with only one player(the Atreides) knowing what is on the card you are bidding on and able to sell that information to any other players and then the resulting money going to one player(the Emperor) is just bonkers. Along with one player(Harkonan) getting a bonus extra card if they win the bid just makes for a ludicrous system that somehow balances itself out almost perfectly.

      I hadn't thought about that (and I've only played Rex), but I agree--it's a really clever system!

    Rurik: Dawn of Kiev has a really cool auction programming mechanic to determine how strong of a turn you get along with what order you do your actions in. You bid up the stronger actions with coins.

    It's nice to see the Cursed Court getting some love, it's so under rated for all the great mechanics that it blends together. I've used it as a gateway game to introduce social deduction and bidding and it really works great at a high player count!

    The one auction game that immediately comes to mind from our collection is Biblios. Now that I've learned about the High Society money rule it makes me wonder how adding that as a house rule to Biblios would change things at the end. Sometimes you have money and there's nothing to do with it. Other times people will go all out because they know they only need that one card to complete their set and guarantee some kind of outcome. Would be cool to add this element of needing to not have the least amount of money left.

    Great list! If you love auctions, Knizia is definitely the master on this genre! Medici, Blue Moon Legends are great but Ra is also my favorite!

    New printing of Ra coming out from Dice Tree Games this year. They put out the Korean version of Modern Art with the gavel so I’m guessing their version of Ra will also be over the top

    Great video Mr. Stegmaier! At the start I predicted Q.E. would be your number 1. My game group loves For Sale, I think it's okay. My favorite bidding style game is Lost Cities: Rivals, which I like better than any other version of Lost Cities.

    QE sounds very interesting. Would like to give that a try. I haven’t played too many auction games but Keyflower has had a great auction and bidding mechanic in it.

    I adore a small auction game called Exodus Fleet from TMG which smashes up a Puerto Rico style, role-selection game with an auction as to who gets to do the best version of that action. There are two wrinkles to this. 1) There are 1 less than the number of players available slots to take the action selected with a downward sliding scale of efficacy. 2) you can bid any number higher than the minimum bid (3 money) regardless of previous bids... so you can slot in to come in 2nd, if you want.
    It's got the best amalgam of a medium-weight euro-style engine builder with a time-value-of-money element I've seen. Really great game and completely underappreciated.
    Another one is Iberian Rails which is a mash up of a classic train auction game with Imperial where you don't take the turns, the company does and you are just trying to make as much money as possible using the auctions for shares and managing their treasuries as you can. It also has a very cool role selection mechanism which adds so much.
    Two real gems in this area that not a lot of people know about.

    I'm not as enamored of auction/bidding games. But I do like when auctions are part of a game,i.e., Scoville, Biblio's, for turn order in Five Tribes and Hit Z Road. My favorite pure auction game is Lascaux, a Mayfair game.

    Indonesia is my favorite board game with an auction mechanism. Auction is not in the whole core of the game but still it contributes a lot to the economical theme of the game. This game is very undermentioned.

    Jamey, what are your thoughts on CMON's version of Modern Art?
    I've been wanting to get an auction/bidding game since it's seen under represented mechanic in my collection. I do have Skull which gets frequent play, but isn't very deep.

    I mainly play with only my spouse, so many auction games don't work. However, Ra is really good even at two. I can also play solo on the app, even if the AI is a little wonky. It is ridiculous how many times I can play that game and not get tired of it.

    Have you played Medici? I find it so clever. I went years without playing it and then got given a copy. It sat on my shelf for a year and then I FINALLY learnt it. Imagine my surprise that it was awesome. Really clever interaction, really recommend it.

    The Speicherstadt auction mechanism is used by Feld again in Jorvik.

    • @mccrispy
      @mccrispy 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm pretty sure that Jorvik is just a re-theme of Speicherstadt, rather than a reuse of the mechanism. The description of Jorvik on BGG seems to confirm it. I enjoy Jorvik immensely.

    Have you played "Felicity: the cat in the sack" by Friedemann Friese.
    That is much fun with 4 or better 5 players.
    It includes bluffing as most of the time all or all but one player dont know exactly what they are bidding for.

    No Stockpile???
    I am not a huge fan of Auctions though I agree that Ra does it best. I have a copy of QE on the way as well with the recent KS for it and On Tour. A few of your others were also on my list but I really like the auction mechanic in Stockpile of the bid only being over once all locations have been chosen. A big part of that though is the way that the goods/stocks being bid on are built by the players with a mix of public and secret information.

    • @jameystegmaier
      @jameystegmaier  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think Amun-Re does something like that too. It's a really cool mechanism!
