  • I’ve always been a fan of Yu-Gi-Oh when I was growing up, especially the original series and the card game. However, I know that Yu-Gi-Oh The Movie is one of those films that was destroyed by critics with bad reviews and has one of the lowest scores on Rotten Tomatoes. However, in my review, I will explain why Yu-Gi-Oh The Movie is that one movie that I love that everyone else seems to hate

The movie he hates that everyone loves was Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs.
The movie he loves that everyone hates is Yu-Gi-Oh! The Movie.
He has two sides of a coin for a movie experience.

YES! "Saludos Amigos" is the next review. Did an essay in college about the Good Neighbor Policy and Walt Disney's trip to South America. Had a blast studying it and watching "Saludos Amigos" and "The Three Caballeros" with knowing why they were created. The professor loved it and gave me an A. Loved those movies since I was little.
Personally, I'd love to see the Good Neighbor Policy being used in this century with how international relationships are lately.

Even as someone that enjoyed "Yu-Gi-Oh" back in the day, I didn't care much for "Pyramid of Light." Based on my last experience with this movie, it lacked the punch that various multi-part episodes had when it came to its dueling aspect, and even the story felt underwhelming with Anubis arriving near the end. But that's just me, though. At least the animation was good and the voice actors still did a great job, especially Eric Stuart and Dan Green.

I even got the special card my theater was giving out when I was able to watch it. I loved and enjoyed all of it. I even got the movie for Christmas once it came out and watched it daily. I appreciate the fact that this anime got a theatrical release, sad to say that I was never able to see it on the big screen and obtain the available cards that came with it. Pyramid of Light is fun to watch, but not my favorite of the Yugioh films (the ones that came after…big improvements).

I may not be a ‘Yu-Gi-Oh!’ fan, but the 2004 soundtrack played during the end credits is admittedly awesome! It’s also interesting that this was the sole reason why Warner Bros. never released another 4Kids Entertainment movie based on that franchise, along with the first three Pokémon movies, to American theaters.
Taking of which, I hope AniMat reviews both ‘Pokémon The Movie 2000’ and ‘Pokémon 3’ in the future.

Yu gi oh was a childhood favourite of mine growing up too and I watched most of the new generations following the original one. The movie is not meant to please critics or people who aren't invested into the series already it's for the fans it works on that level with a killer soundtrack and great animation to take away from it. We all have that one film that just works for us and it's not that popular it can be seen as a bad film.

It really is bizarre how this movie was the product of 4Kids from the get-go and yet it is a *LOT* less restrictive with its content compared to the censorship the show suffered from (ie, characters drink alcohol, they mention death, they don't censor the more gruesome moments, has a darker tone, etc.).
I know that's because it was a movie released in theaters as opposed to a show that had to meet some TV guidelines but it's still bizarre to see that kind of thing on _4Kids' Yu-Gi-Oh!_

And it was even a bigger success then Ruby Gillman & I especially will never give that up especially for your more misguided review back there though I also know that you would have liked it even better than otherwise form your review and is more deserving of the Animat seal of approval and even some people out there called it the best of the 3 movies which you would have more likely to see it and especially for the Ture magic of the whole trilogy in general 20:36 - 23:25

"If you're looking for a complex cast that offers a lot of psychological substance, then Yugioh is not for you."
I dunno Yugioh GX's Judai grappled with depression pretty well. Not to mention Yusaku having PTSD from being shocked playing card games as a six year old for months on end over in Yugioh VRAINS.
This comment was brought to you by a Yugioh superfan who watched all 1000+ episodes mostly in sub. A lot of Yugioh is better that way.
This movie isn't one of them though. The dub's campiness made the kind of generic story way more enjoyable and I'm glad to see a critical review of it judge it fairly and acknowledge what it is: a silly campy longer episode for fans of the show.

So an interesting thing about this movie is that unlike the Pokémon movies, this was a purely 4kids production. Warner Brothers wanted a movie but Konami didn't have one planned, so 4kids wrote their own Yu-Gi-Oh feature film and paid the Japanese animation studio to animate it. For whatever reason, the Japanese version still ended up being longer, but it's technically 100% a 4kids movie.
Also, I think Japan aired this movie on TV once and never again. Apparently, they don't consider it canon.

I think I watched this movie when it first came out but forgot about it soon afterwards. It wasn't until I saw the Yu-Gi-Oh! Abridged parody several years later that I remembered the movie existed. Honestly, LittleKuriboh's version is better, especially when he makes fun of the last minute villain's one-dimensional motives.

I don't think anyone hates Pyramid of Light, its script is just not very good, but like what were critics expecting of a movie that's based on an anime that is designed to sell a product? Sure, I love the anime, it's one of my favorite stories of all time but like come on let's not pretend it was a masterpiece in writing either

So, wait, I'm NOT the only one who likes this film? I was a sucker for 4Kids' material back in the day, especially Pokemon and Yugioh. Yeah, the duels drag in comparison to how I thought they were, but thankfully, this movie makes it less of a slog. I also recommend LittleKuriboh's abridged series. Yeah, it's not as polished as some of its abridged brethren, but it still has that LK charm that's hard to ignore.

  • @WillieManga
    @WillieManga 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Ok, I just need to say this; on its own, it's pretty good. But as a Yugioh movie, fans may notice some inconsistencies with the card game, which is weird cause it exists to advertise some of the cards, pretty much. I call it "screw the rules: the movie". Heh, Abridged Dub joke! Oh well, I enjoy how much darker it is compared to the 4kids series. They really go all out this time, but I'm personally more partial to Darkside of Dimensions.

While I never really was a big fan of Yu-Gi-Oh, I was familiar with it throughout my life through my brother. I do recall seeing some parts of this movie many years ago, maybe only a couple of parts, but I do recall seeing some of it. I don't think I'll enjoy this film as much as you did, but I'm glad you still enjoyed it. I do hope "Saludos Amigos" is a film you'll enjoy as much as this one, maybe even more.

I LOVE THIS MOVIE. The first time I saw it I was on the floor either laughing or biting my nails in anticipation. I don't consider the movie canon to the anime/manga, but I still enjoy it even to this day and I still laugh at the scene where Yugi and friends are running from the zombies.
for newcomer. just deal with that this anime takes itself incredibly seriously to a silly world. I don't watch Yugioh for the card game itself but for seeing all of the characters play off each other. this anime always makes me smile which is why it is still to this day one of my guilty pleasures.

It's the 1st YGO movie I ever seen, and even now - watching it as an 'over 30 year old adult' I still love it just as much.
I grew up with the OG YGO and have even collected a large portion of YGO items
Even having an OG Blue Eyes art style floor mat.
Ive seen the other movies, but this one will always be number one to me.
