  • What's the first thing you have to do when working on an Audi? Remove the front of the car! In this video I replace the timing belt, oil seals, idler pulley and water pump on Project Unintended Spending (1987 Audi 5000 CS Quattro). We also figure out how screwed the heater core is (thanks Stop Leak!).

    This was 25 years ago but I remember setting up a breaker bar/socket on the crank pulley bolt and then bumping the starter. It worked great.

    Im doing my crank seal right now with the exact tool and ive completely destroyed it. This this is fighting me tooth and nail my lord. It feels like im never going to get this thing going at this pace.

      Oil seals are the worst, especially super old ones. Even if you accidentally score the crank, you can get a Speedi-Sleeve and it will be oil tight when putting the new seal on. I had to use one on the camshaft on this car.

    Ahh memories of when I did the timing belt on my urquattro. I wish the front came off like your 5000. Some real mucking about in tight spaces even with the bumper off.
    I had that power steering pump off so many times! I kinked the O-ring on the water pump as I re-fitted, causing a coolant leak. Sigh. Old cars!
    Lots of similarities between my 10v 5 cylinder and yours, and lots of differences.

    Excellent and meticulous work, as always! Looking forward to seeing how you tackle the heater core. I remember when I did one on my '91 Pathfinder a few years ago, the Clymer's manual just said "There is no established factory procedure for the replacement of this part" or something cruel like that. I won't say how long it took, lol.

    Great video as always. One of the reasons these cars are so rare now may be how hard it is to work on them. It looks like a nightmare!

      There are absolutely no part diagrams for it either which adds to the fun!

    I love watching your videos! Because I don’t have the time to learn and work on cars, it is a real joy to watch you take the seriously time consuming amount of time to do the job right! And I learn so much about auto mechanics from watching your projects. Looking forward to the next video! For your next car project, consider a Series 4 Alfa Romeo! I think it will be a compliment to your E30 and Audi projects.

      Thank you! I've had one of those Series 4 Aflas before - it was prior to the TH-cam channel. Rust free too. Sold it for way too cheap lol. Wouldn't mind another if the price was right.

    What a trip down memory lane! I did the timing belt job in my driveway back in the late 90's. I avoided taking off the core support. With the bumper, grill and intercooler off, there is plenty of access. The access you had was outstanding, so I can see why you did that. I did the heater core job when mine started leaking. Don't forget the butyl tape to re-seal the heater box to the plenum. Don't want water leaks there!

    • @PracticalEnthusiast
      @PracticalEnthusiast  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was debating not taking the core support off, but I think I'm still glad I did it. Thank you for the tip on the butyl tape! I was questioning the integrity of this old gasket haha.

    I don`t know how you can resist going crazy with the degreaser and then a good scrub all over the place. I`d be already making the engine bay as pristine as the rest of the car 🙂

    It says in the manual that you need “God strength to tighten the bolt in combination with Thor’s hammer” and “only the one worthy of the mighty Audi can do so”.

    Great video! Do you have a part number or search term for the lockout tool? I'm in need of one from eBay as well!

    • @PracticalEnthusiast
      @PracticalEnthusiast  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The part number is an ultra unspecific "2084" but you might have luck searching by terms including "VW Audi 5 cylinder crank locking tool". If you have to buy it new, be prepared for some sticker shock!

    Older car ownership- like 95% of any repair job is cleaning! Apologies if you already mentioned it, but do you know what problem the stop leak was meant to address?

    • @PracticalEnthusiast
      @PracticalEnthusiast  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's exactly right! And cleaning always takes more time than I budget for. I believe the stop leak was meant to address the leaking water pump O-ring gasket, which didn't really work.

    Is it possible to replace the timing belt without removing the harmonic balancer?

    • @PracticalEnthusiast
      @PracticalEnthusiast  ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't think so. There's a belt guide molded into the front of the engine that's there to prevent the belt coming off. It runs right up against the harmonic balancer.

      @@PracticalEnthusiast Ah....I watched the video closely, but I didn't see that detail. I can't find a mechanic near me willing to replace the timing belt on my '87 5000S. They all say the Audi is too old. So I am trying to prepare myself to do it. Pretty sure I won't find the special tool you used to hold the belt in place, so looking for an alternative approach.
      Your videos on the '87 Quattro are exceptionally helpful. I have a few pesky issues that I hope to improve - no fresh air, for one. I learned about the servo motor box behind the glove box from your video. Planning to test the servos w/ a 9 volt battery next week following your process. I'm very grateful you decided to create and post your "project unexpected expenditures". 🤭👍

  • @chrisgreco4249

    Does anyone know where to buy the Audi 2084 special tool used here ? All the mechanics nearby tell me my '87 5000S is too old to work on. Glad my doctor and dentist don't feel that way about me ! So, it looks like I am going to replace the timing belt myself.
