fun fact from the Great War, pigeons were the main source of communication at the time, nothing else was more reliable than a trusty pigeon, they had a success rate of 90% what's even more remarkable is that the pigeons were targeted once spotted, some would finish their journey with horrific wounds, broken legs, cuts and even losing eyesight. taking that into account while listening to this song....yup...I'm fucking crying lol
Considering the fact that often the only available method of communication in the field were pigeons or runners, pigeons indirectly saved many runner's lives as their casualty rate was through the roof.
@@silvorthegrand6976 not only that, a runner is more likely to get shot because: he's bigger; on the same height as targets for bullets and tank/artillery shells; slowed/stopped by barbed wire, destroyed tanks, bodies, trenches and overall imperfect terrain itself. Not to mention that a pigeon could hide in the sky better than a fully grown man could on an active warzone. They saved a lot of lives by delivering messages where couriers weren't able to do so in time or at all.
Edwards grab the pigeon! Don't do it you'll blow us all to bits. It's the only chance we got McManus! Edwards, grab that pigeon! DONT DO IT! DONT LISTEN TO THAT MAN!!! That's an order son! EDWARDS!!! Release the pigeon! That is an order son do you understand me!
Well... the games have given us, the players, control over many things. But the pigeon? That is really something original. And the choice of music is... well I think I can say Epic.
45100 i am not a fan of wargames but this one i think it is awsome. the storyline and how they put it together. the moment when it starts with the pigeon and the music comes up, awsome.
One day, in a match of operations, I was an Italian soldier, desperately looking for victory on Iron walls because I can never beat it, the adventures and the slaughterhouse of the final fortress of monte grappa and empires edge was the most intense experiences I have ever had, but in 1 match my team managed to break through the monte grappa forts and into the Adriatic coast with 1 last battalion then a path to victory. This is probably my most satisfying operations victory ever. For one, monte grappa was a hard map to beat on operations, and second, it really brings chills to my bones when I hear the victory speech of the Italian general and the historical significance of the battle. Oh damn it was a great adventure, after the match was over, heading to the main menu and this song played, i stopped moving for a sec, went speechless and a tear rolled down my eyes, this was the battle I will never forget.
I think he means that it was referred as the "War to End All Wars", but in fact it didn't. Wars never ended wars. The second world war occurred after nearly 2 decades, making that an obvious irony ^^
Karim Sandouka it was called the war to end all wars because it was the last time that the final standing empires of the world would clash. Like the ottomans, the Austro-Hungarians, Germany under the rule of the Kaiser. In many respects it was the war to end all wars but I think people misinterpret it's meaning
I started playing Battlefield 1 due to COVID quarantine and when this pigeon came out I legit shed a tear. Felt like that pigeon was flying over all of us too.
This piece of music is so beautiful, it makes you really think about the First World War and the life lost and sacrifice of young men and women from all nations that were affected by the war both allied and axis. I want everyone who plays this game to remember that it all actually happened.
Its absolutely criminal that Battlefield 1 never won any awards for its soundtrack. If Doom hadn't come out that year, there would have been absolutely no contest.
Agreed. 100 % the best by almost any standard. Most immersive multiplayer out of any shooter game and the small stories that make up the campaign are all individual masterpieces in my opinion.
I heard a story from a World War 1 veteran. On the final day of the war, when all the guns fell silent, apparently the sun came out and the birds flew and began to chirp away. Neither side wanted to kill the other. Everyone in each trench was equal, forced by their leaders to fight in the perilous war. In war, there are no winners.
_Many and various animals were employed to support British and Allied Forces in wars and campaigns over the centuries and as a result millions died. From the pigeon to the elephant they all played a vital role in every region of the world in the cause of human freedom. Their contribution must never be forgotten._
I love when the pigeon is flying and you can see the carnage of war below you bullets fireing bombs exploding it really turns war into a beautiful moment * when the pigeon is flying * because here u have something ugly going on an dyou got a beautiful animal just soring over it all.
T5IVEPICTURES definitely one of the best parts of the game. Goes to show war ain't pretty in any case, especially when the war is pointless and has no purpose. DICE really went all out with this one. Yeah, I hope this will be more of a peaceful era... And civil wars isnt really 'huge' as its not countries against countries. Just wanted to point that out, because I know someone might mention it.

Christmas of 2016: opening Battlefield 1 after it has finally finished installing and hearing this song for the first time on the main menu, goodbye Battlefield 1 you will always be my favorite game :,(
If you combine the death toll of both World Wars, more than 100 million perished... World War II would begin only 21 years after World War I. Its sad to say, but World War II was truly just a continuation of World War I. May the fallen Rest in Peace.
Even though the game is 3 years old it gives me a lot of nostalgia just listening to this bringing back memories of my first only in battlefield moment my, first 20 kills games, grinding to get the hellreigiel, my first quad and much more and TBH I really miss those times where people use too say "rip Cod" I miss you 2016/2017 I really do
Makes me think of a french soldier in a field of poppies in the cold autumn night, looking up into the starry sky, pondering what the future of humanity holds.
Brought tears to my grandpa when he heard this song playing on the pigeon mission when I was playing It on christmas at their house. He loved watching me play it. And now that his gone I'm not gonna lie i come here and listen to this song quite frequently. Makes me cry even a little. And i don't cry. Miss ya Gpaw. ❤
just hearing this, soaring In the clouds as the pigeon heading back to HQ gazing at the battlefield , as if it was the apocalypse itself happening. all the deaths that had been caused for the war . just made me tear up honestly. I felt really immersed in this scene.
What a wonderful, emotional and epic song. It gives me chills and make me dream, while in the same time, the music is used as during a tragic moment when, for the first time, you can look at the war from a totally different perspective. It will make me cry for sure...
Pierre, this is one of two soundtracks that can actually bring some tears to my eyes. The only other soundtrack that ever came this close was Gettysburg's.
By far my favourite battlefield game, the music, the combat, the art style, the voice overs, it really just hits right on every note. I hope there will be another battlefield of the same quality.. this game was a blessing and i finally realized coming back to it a couple of weeks ago. I've owned the game since it was released too xd
I think the most moving bit about this sequence in the game is that you're not fighting anyone. You're a carrier pigeon. You're floating up among the clouds and the sky away from all the violence below you. Damn this was a great bit.
This makes me think about the people who really gave their lives during the war. The Anzac on cape helles. The doughboy in the Argonne. The tommy at the fields of st. quentin. Truly touching.
You are amazing for this. This song played through my head as I learn my great great uncle was in wwi on the American side in the Lost Battalion. he died in 1988 at age 91
Every time I hear this in the main menu it makes me sad and sometimes I even cry. My great grandfather fought in the Austro-Hungarian army on the Eastern front in Galicia-Volhynia and barely made it out alive. They were running out of ammo and supplies and the Russians just kept coming. They would kill one enemy soldier and then another one would pop up behind him, take the dead guy's gun, and continue charging the trenches. Before they knew it, they were fighting hand to hand and one of the Russians grabbed my grandfather by the backpack but luckily the Austro-Hungarian army had these really neat leather backpacks that were super strong so my great grandfather was able to take the backpack off of his back, throwing the Russian to the ground. I can't imagine what was going through his head. One day you're at home and everything's normal, and the next day they tell you that you've been conscripted and that you're being sent to the front lines. And he was only 20 years old.
That's a great experience Strahinja! This song also brings me tears. I have one family member that served in the Great War, but unfortunately his story is lost to history. I am working hard to try to make the public remember this war, because it in many ways worse than World War Two. Think of the change. in 1914, you have brightly colored uniforms, soft hats and no airplanes, fast forward to 1918, you have drab clothing, a steel pot, Airplanes are all around, and a scary Iron monster has just made it's appearance on the battlefield (the tank to all of you who can't figure it out). Another point why Battlefield One is one of the best games ever. I have read about the great war pretty much my entire life, and it never clicked that it was so gruesome until I played the first mission and the Italian mission, and played the epilogue. Well put together game.
WW1: 18 Million casualties WW2: 50-80 Million casualties Not trying to downplay the horrors of the great war, but World War Two was definitely the more devastating war.
World War 2 was an outcome of World War 1, without it The German Empire would've never fallen to the point of a Political Party Leader rising to Chancellor and Dictator.
My great grandfather was supposed to serve in this war. He didn’t serve because have had three kids. All of them fought in the Second World War and made it out alive. My grandfather was in the 442. There’s this picture of him with a French boy he saved.
you know what makes this game complete? the campaign feels like it's being told, like it's stuff that actually happened with the voiceovers. i think the saddest war story of them all was the italian one. just think about it. you carry out an assault in full body armor to cover your brothers battalion, but it all goes to shit. you fight your way through countless germans in war torn fields, with men cowering in fear, all while being told how the character you play as felt, describing the thoughts that must've gone through the heads of those italians. then you find your brother at long last, dead. it's actually touching in a weird way. plus the music fits perfectly. because the campaign is split into these 6 war stories, there's just stories to be heard, people to lose, battles to be won, and they absolutely nailed it. Nothing is written is lame as fuck though.
DICE did a really good job with the soundtrack and the originality of the gameplay is just breath taking. Love this game, very addicting. Surely my #1 game!
I am the 1,337th viewer, I feel special. Also, I would've loved to hear this when you're firing that AA gun on the top of the mountain and desperately trying to take down the incoming bombers.
+Exploring The Forgotten Cinematic Cinematic I think that's the point, having this kind of music in a contradicting environment can really give you the feels
Really reminds you of the atmosphere of The Great War. Young men left their lives at home. Away from their fathers, mothers, and siblings. Some young men made it back, some didnt, some made it back but suffered from severe trauma called shell shock. These men were young boys when they entered the war and they soon became warriors. Proud to say my great great grandfather was a member of the us army, 3rd infantry division in ww1. Always remember that this game is not about getting quad feeds and getting points it is showing the horrors and tragedy of war, and that it is a terrible thing. The pointless war, ‘The war to end all wars’ ended nothing it ended the lives of young men.
The first time I played the campaign I heard the music, I heard the speeches, I saw the scenes, I saw the people, I saw the bodies, I saw the pride and I closed my eyes and imagined how it was like fighting for the things you love but knowing you likely won't survive in a massive war. It won't relate in the real war but imagining how each soldier was willing to charge at the enemies, screaming to show they weren't afraid as they ran through mud, soared through skies, plowed through debris and fight in piles of bodies. It really makes a lot of us gamers think that without human ambition we wouldn't be able to see head on into the future of games. So I thank the heavens that I was able to live a life that didn't allow me to feel the pain of the fallen warriors. I know that I need to love my life how it is and it isn't as bad as I think it is. At this point I'm just blabbering a bunch of nonsense but.... I don't care at all. I'm *Happy*
This game really shows the emotion and sadness behind war. I felt like the pigeon scene made you fly back over the mess you caused and see what you did to the people and town...
God forgive and bless each and every soldier from each and every nation. Ottoman, British, American. May we never forget. Even in such simple things. Even in a video game. Let us not forget. It's okay to remember.
In the movie War Horse, the grandfather of the young French girl talks about carrier pigeons. And how they only know one thing and that is to fly home, ignoring everything around them and to just go home. He asks if it is bravery that they are able to do that without ever looking at the pain and destruction around them, specifically below them. I think that’s the kind of thing this scene was trying to portray.
When you get control of the pigeon you look down and see the horrific war gong under you, and this magnificent theme plays and it shows how this pigeon doesn’t care about the war that is going on, it cares about completing it’s journey. And this theme plays. This was one of the coolest moments in gaming history for me.
This how art and video games blend together, so single scene with a powerful impact and meaning, this is a truly masterpiece, when i first saw it when playing was a shock, that i will never forget!
i think battlefield 1 have a moral story.... the story that should change us... "Killings is bad thing But fighting for freedom is the biggest honor you can get" - Wilhelm Kaiser I/II
I keep imagining this scene going on for much longer than it did in the game, and even including the bird flying straight through a fire fight, literally flying fast enough to just barely pass whizzing bullets and shrapnel filled explosions, and perhaps even flying through a wind mill or two on it’s way back to the artillery pieces. Just...the way it seems unable to be touched by anything while it flies, and the calm serenity of the song just nailing that sensation home.
abd who els listens to this while playing g operations? while your storming the area and bullets fireing in all directions this game is truly an amazing game really well done I can't wait to see what they do next
Lamberry TV I don't know if anyone would be into something even older like the war of 1812 when Canada fought against the USA or the civil war bit I'd like to see it happen even a medival warfare. What do you think?
I think something civil war era would be pretty great. But would people think it's too controversial? You know how the Confederate flag was banned and all that. Personally I'd love to see a BF game dedicated to Vietnam. The bfbc2 dlc was just a tease lol
Such an wonderful moment, completely unexpected. Suddenly you are given control of a small animal that is incapable of even understanding the magnitude of what is happening around it. It just soars high above it all. Serenity in a world gone insane.
when you fly as pigeon ober that city, you can only think, imagin that there were young boys, because i can hardly call 18yr old a fine man. that they were fighting there. for some that was first and last sight of war.
I have dyslexia like a fair few and the way we perceive sounds and music the visual world so intensely this is up there with the best I have heard , we can turn thoughts into reality through our imagination
You know, I was reading All Quiet on the Western Front, and in the last chapter, this song was playing in my head. I don't know why, but it fits. All was silent, but everything has changed.
Hi, apparently I'm not the only one who has noticed the musical beauty of Battlefield 1. I'm also looking for a track, I only heard it a couple of times on online mode, while map was loading. It's not part of "End Of Round" track. To describe what I'm looking for: it's a quiet moment, and suddenly those sweet feminine voices come up singing in a church-like sound. Very holy so to speak. It doesn't last long but mannnn isn't it beautifull! I have been searching desperately since a week now and I can't find it. Perhaps you guys know where I could find it? Cheers :)
It’s amazing to think that all this happened just a few generations ago. Let all the soldiers, Allied forces and Central powers alike be remembered forever. Each side fought bravely for peace and to end the war to end all wars.
I don't know who wrote the battlefield 1 music but I think we should all thank him for giving us the epic moments his music gives us.
Sietse could have been a her, or a team of multiple people. Just sayin.
Yes the OST is simply amazing. Lots of Emotion and power to it.
Yes. I agree with that.
T34pro shut up moron
Elegant Elliot Offen mad ?
This game hit me right in my battlefeels

Dont forget Cher Ami, who was awarded the Croixe de Guerre, when she carried a message for the Lost Battalion in the Meuse-Argonne offense.
Didn't the Germans release hawks to attack the birds too?

Christmas of 2016: opening Battlefield 1 after it has finally finished installing and hearing this song for the first time on the main menu, goodbye Battlefield 1 you will always be my favorite game :,(
"More than 60 millions soldeirs took part in World War I to end War"
"But it ended nothing"
That's sad man
All that for nothing....
Battlefield 1 has the best soundtracks in the franchise hands down.
easily. Every single song gives me goosebumps.
Man what a great soundtrack. No doubt epic. Way better than Infinite Warshit
Coltaine47 _ yeah the beta had menu music and it was just so flat sounding.
tictac gaming Yeah i thought the menu music really sucked. The menu music for BF1 is waaaaaaaay better like 1000 times
Infinite Shitfare*
G-Legend I like IW and BF1 the same. Just why the fuck did they release IW so close to BF1? That's automatic failure lmao
G-Legend nah i think iw had a better ost. not that bf1 music is bad. i own both.
Who can dislike this?? this is beautiful!
Wolfanstain Lobo del desierto McMannus

Brought tears to my grandpa when he heard this song playing on the pigeon mission when I was playing It on christmas at their house. He loved watching me play it. And now that his gone I'm not gonna lie i come here and listen to this song quite frequently. Makes me cry even a little. And i don't cry. Miss ya Gpaw. ❤
Sorry for your loss man
just hearing this, soaring In the clouds as the pigeon heading back to HQ gazing at the battlefield , as if it was the apocalypse itself happening. all the deaths that had been caused for the war . just made me tear up honestly.
The only other soundtrack that ever came this close was Gettysburg's.
i feel emotional right now.. battlefield 1 have a great music 😭
the first song that come up when im launching battlefield 1 for the first time
This song describes war more than every other Battlefield 1 Song.
I´ve searched this for so long , its just beautiful.
Thumbs Up for this Song.
This soundtrack will be one that we will all remember, and will eventually bring nostalgia, just like the old Halo themes.
3 years later the nostalgia hits
Ed Lodge still gets me
By far my favourite battlefield game, the music, the combat, the art style, the voice overs, it really just hits right on every note. I hope there will be another battlefield of the same quality.. this game was a blessing and i finally realized coming back to it a couple of weeks ago. I've owned the game since it was released too xd
@@ropi6642 100% the same. It’s such a shame there are very few servers active now, I don’t think they will ever top this game!
I think this song would be perfect to listen to while summing up all of the loss in WW1.
Damn... it’s been 3 years and it’s still amazing.
Brian Rodriguez very true, that’s why I learned it
Here 2 years after your comment. Still brings a tear to my eye
You are amazing for this. This song played through my head as I learn my great great uncle was in wwi on the American side in the Lost Battalion. he died in 1988 at age 91
My great grandfather was a medic in World War 2 and Vietnam
My Great Great Grandfather was in the 3rd Infantry Division HQ battalion in ww1.
This song is a masterpiece
Strahinja Jovanovic It's so sad to think of everyone who was so young and lost their lives
WW1: 18 Million casualties
WW2: 50-80 Million casualties
Not trying to downplay the horrors of the great war, but World War Two was definitely the more devastating war.
Who would've thought the most beautiful imagery of 2016 I seen, would be from a game about killing...
Ah, but it's a game about killing because of the most flimsy and saddening reasons.
Agreed
A game based on a real war where death lurked everywhere and millions of young men were sent to die for nothing.
I honestly just listened to this 10 times in a row while doing my homework...
and almost fell asleep
WORTH IT
Aint that about 100 minutes? Dang
you know what makes this game complete?
the campaign feels like it's being told, like it's stuff that actually happened with the voiceovers. i think the saddest war story of them all was the italian one.
just think about it. you carry out an assault in full body armor to cover your brothers battalion, but it all goes to shit. you fight your way through countless germans in war torn fields, with men cowering in fear, all while being told how the character you play as felt, describing the thoughts that must've gone through the heads of those italians.
then you find your brother at long last, dead. it's actually touching in a weird way. plus the music fits perfectly.
because the campaign is split into these 6 war stories, there's just stories to be heard, people to lose, battles to be won, and they absolutely nailed it.
Nothing is written is lame as fuck though.
punch3870 it was Austro-Hungarians he was killing in the valley
DICE did a really good job with the soundtrack and the originality of the gameplay is just breath taking. Love this game, very addicting.
Surely my #1 game!
this is the best song in the fucking game
You're a legend for making this, man this helps me relax so much in times of stress.
np, this and moonlight sonata help me relax too :)
TragicFX yeah man, you sir have been subbed
I love the Moonlight sonata. One of the greatest musical pieces ever.
you have good taste in music then :)
this song gives me the same feeling as Arvo Part's Spiegel im spiegel
I am the 1,337th viewer, I feel special.
Also, I would've loved to hear this when you're firing that AA gun on the top of the mountain and desperately trying to take down the incoming bombers.
just cheeky peeky play it on youtube while doing it ;)
+Exploring The Forgotten Cinematic Cinematic I think that's the point, having this kind of music in a contradicting environment can really give you the feels
I prefer the track called hunted for that
This sountrack is one of the best!!!
Dang… one point in time pigeons were respected
Best soundtrack all the time. Ever.
I'm *Happy*
Feel happy, and contempt, that you can make their sacrifice, regardless of size... worth the weight in gold
Its amazing how they turned the main theme of a shooter into such a beutiful piece of music
Its not the main theme
Such an amazing piece of music, brings a tear to your eye every time
This game really shows the emotion and sadness behind war.
A little bit of peace in war.
I think that’s the kind of thing this scene was trying to portray.
release the pigeon edward..that's an order son
The scene with the pigeon flying and artillery shells in the sky truly shows war is hell.
I hope the next Battlefield game (WW2 hopefully) will have Hans Zimmer doing the score.
ReaperBOMB GAMING that would be siiick!
ReaperBOMB GAMING definitely. If pay him myself
ReaperBOMB GAMING Two Steps From Hell or Audiomachine though
in my head I can already imagine how DICE can make the ww2 campaign epic.
Why? Whoever the genius was who came up with this masterpiece is fine with me.
Battlefield 1 is the only game where I'll happily sit in the main menu for a few mins because of the amazingness of the soundtrack
Dice games and music make me proud that Sweden makes some of the most popular multiplayer games out there. My little country.
When you get control of the pigeon you look down and see the horrific war gong under you, and this magnificent theme plays and it shows how this pigeon doesn’t care about the war that is going on, it cares about completing it’s journey. And this theme plays. This was one of the coolest moments in gaming history for me.
This is too beautiful :(
This scene is beautiful it shows that even when all hell has broken lose beauty and hope are still there.
this is beatiful love this game!!!!!! 😢😢👏👏👏👏👏
This how art and video games blend together, so single scene with a powerful impact and meaning, this is a truly masterpiece, when i first saw it when playing was a shock, that i will never forget!
And people say video games are bad
They can be used to teach history and other things
trying not to cry
Trying not to think
Trying not to breathe
Trying not to live
arnold sy im trying to not cry too
i think battlefield 1 have a moral story....
the story that should change us...
"Killings is bad thing But fighting for freedom is the biggest honor you can get" - Wilhelm Kaiser I/II
Thanks for making this
I keep imagining this scene going on for much longer than it did in the game, and even including the bird flying straight through a fire fight, literally flying fast enough to just barely pass whizzing bullets and shrapnel filled explosions, and perhaps even flying through a wind mill or two on it’s way back to the artillery pieces. Just...the way it seems unable to be touched by anything while it flies, and the calm serenity of the song just nailing that sensation home.
abd who els listens to this while playing g operations? while your storming the area and bullets fireing in all directions this game is truly an amazing game really well done I can't wait to see what they do next
T5IVEPICTURES me too! I'll be absolutely blown away if DICE can make a game as immersive as this again. I'd love to know what they do next
This has got to be my favorite song in battlefield1 this combined with the pigeon makes it a very good experience
At first you're shooting the ever living shit out of everything at that moves
Next you're a pigeon sending a message to touching music
While looking above the horrors of wa
I have dyslexia like a fair few and the way we perceive sounds and music the visual world so intensely this is up there with the best I have heard , we can turn thoughts into reality through our imagination
goosebumps
Cheers :)
soundcloud.com/superronku/libera-me
Clint Watters heya if you have Siri ask it "what song is this" when it plays it will probably find it
Did you already find it? Maybe it's this one: 'Zadji Zadji (Dawn of a New Time)'
It’s amazing to think that all this happened just a few generations ago. Let all the soldiers, Allied forces and Central powers alike be remembered forever. Each side fought bravely for peace and to end the war to end all wars.
